Wireless carriers seek cross-border spectrum cooperation

BARCELONA, Spain--Mobile network operators traditionally use Mobile World Congress to call for lower taxes and more wireless spectrum. This year, a new word has entered the wish list: harmonization.

The mobile industry today must deal with a hodgepodge of electromagnetic frequencies that differ from carrier to carrier and country to country. Franco Bernabe, chief executive of Telecom Italia, wants to see not just more spectrum for wireless operators, but also spectrum that's not so fragmented.

"It's not just about having the right amount of spectrum. It's critical that the spectrum is harmonized on a global basis,&… Read more

Wireless CEOs warn of industry challenges, call for openness

BARCELONA, Spain--Not everything is rosy in the wireless industry.

That's an unusual thing to say during the kickoff keynote address at Mobile World Congress, the world's largest wireless confab. Yet that's exactly what Franco Bernabe, CEO of Telecom Italia, said during his prepared remarks today.

"I don't want to say we're an industry with problems," Bernabe said. "We're still growing and we have a lot of opportunities. But we have a lot of challenges we need to face."

Bernabe was joined by China Mobile CEO Li Yue, Vodafone CEO Vittorio … Read more

Watch a Nissan Juke-R spank a trio of supercars in Dubai

When Nissan showed us renderings of a GT-R powered Nissan Juke-R, we said, "Gee, that's neat." When it started building the darn thing, our interest was piqued.

Today, we have a video of this oddest of skunkworks supercars at a street race exhibition event in Dubai going wheel-to-wheel with the likes of a Lamborghini Gallardo, a Ferrari 458 Italia, and a Mercedes-Benz SLS. Check it out below.

OK, so "wheel-to-wheel" was a bit of an overstatement as the Juke hands the trio of proper supercars their hats around an improvised short course. How did that … Read more

New Ferrari F1 wheel for racing sim diehards

Thrustmaster has announced an authentic, life-size controller modeled after a Ferrari 150 Italia Formula 1 racing wheel. The replica is covered with buttons, switches, and dials, as well as two F1-style "push and pull" metal shifters. It's designed as a replacement wheel for the company's existing T500 RS racing system featuring 1,080-degree rotation, powerful force-feedback and a heavy-duty metal footrest.

A full setup will cost close to $800 ($199 for the F1 wheel and $599 for the T500 RS), which can be hard to stomach for most gamers even though it is PC- and PS3-compatible. But for that price, you do get an advanced PC mode that supports 25 action buttons and a directional pad for race simulation junkies. The Ferrari F1 Wheel add-on will be launched in early October.

How to ruin a perfectly good Ferrari 458 Italia (video)

Money buys a lot of things. Rake together enough dough and it can buy you the $226,000 Ferrari 458 Italia--an impressive bit of Italian engineering on wheels with a Pininfarina-penned design that would be seriously difficult to improve upon.

However, the 458 Italia owner in the video below proudly proves that if there's one thing that money can't buy, it's taste. He (or she) has fitted the Italian supercar with underglow lighting and strobes that would look right at home on the set of 2001's The Fast and the Furious. Check out the video below … Read more

2010 Maserati Quattroporte: A closer look

In my last article, we got to see and hear the Maserati Quattroporte, the car most likely to get a woman hot and bothered through the noise it emits in action, according to a study. In 2008, a British insurance company conducted a test to validate this theory; however, I imagine it would be hard to prove such a claim as indisputable fact. However, there are other aspects of the Quattroporte that are true--and that's what today's video is all about. So let's take closer look at the 2010 edition of this Italian stallion.

The 2011 Maserati … Read more

2010 Ferrari California: The Practical Ferrari?

I know I've been giving a lot of lip service to Ferrari lately on this blog, but it's hard to argue that it's not been informative and fun. I promise to move on to other subjects this week, but I have one more Prancing Horse I'd like to take a closer look at.

Some critics and consumers have suggested that the introduction of the new Ferrari sports supercar, the 458 Italia, came about partly because certain Ferrari snobs were put off by the 2009 Ferrari California's more streamlined and practical features and design. It does … Read more

Ferrari F430 Scuderia on BBC's 'Top Gear'

Most people who know me consider me to be quite sarcastic. It turns out, that's a trait I share with my favorite "snarky British dude" Jeremy Clarkson, who hosts the popular British TV program "Top Gear." The BBC show is dedicated to automobiles and racing but with a biting sense of humor to make things interesting. Well, between all the great European cars and the sometimes nasty commentary, it's no surprise that I've become quite a fan of the show.

This isn't the first time I've featured a "Top Gear&… Read more

Looking back: The Ferrari F430

This week we've been enjoying Web videos of the newest sports car masterpiece from Ferrari called the 458 Italia that should hit American soil within the next few months. The 458 was developed to be the heir apparent to another popular Ferrari performance model, the F430, so I thought it would be appropriate to a look back at the popular F430 model produced by Ferrari from 2004-2009.

The Web video here depicts the 2006-2007 version of the F430, and just like every other Ferrari I've ever seen, the F430 is indeed a beauty. Ya gotta love the sound … Read more

2010 Ferrari 458 Italia in action!

Monday's video blog gave us a quick look at the newest addition to the Ferrari sports car legacy, the 2010 458 Italia. So, today I thought we should delve a little deeper into what the 458 Italia is all about, and this Web video from U.K.-based EVO Magazine not only breaks down the nuts and bolts of this ass kicker, but we also get to bear witness as this "main event" vehicle is taken for a spin on the scenic British country roads. Let's go!

In the first phase of this Web clip, Chris … Read more
