Surface 'good' for PC ecosystem, says Microsoft CFO

Microsoft is now a hardware leader, according to the company's chief financial officer.

Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference today, CFO Peter Klein characterized Microsoft as a mentor of sorts for the rest of the PC industry.

"There are always things we can do like the Surface that's good for the ecosystem, good for customers," he said, responding to a question about vertical integration.

The "ecosystem" is essentially code for the PC industry, while "vertical integration" implies doing both the software and the hardware -- which Apple has been … Read more

Microsoft's mobile guru Andy Lees nabs a promotion

As Microsoft goes through a major corporate shakeup, it seems to have made some other shifts and changes in its leadership recently. A company spokesperson told CNET that Microsoft quietly moved mobile guru Andy Lees to the head of corporate development and strategy about a month ago.

Lees has been with the company for more than 20 years. Less than a year ago, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer changed Lees from being president of the Windows Phone division to a vaguely described job that had Lees focusing on a set of projects with Windows Phone and Windows 8. In this role, … Read more

Online justice: Fund for Karen Klein, bullied bus monitor, nears $500,000 mark

Just days since a YouTube clip went viral showing students in upstate New York bullying a 68-year-old bus monitor, an online fundraiser is nearing the $500,000 mark.

The clip of Karen Klein, being mercilessly tormented on the bus ride home by unseen creatures resembling young humans, went up earlier this week and has logged more than 3.9 million views.

An Internet benefactor from Toronto, Max Sidorov, created a fundraising site to give Klein the "vacation of a lifetime." Klein, who worked as a bus driver in the Greece Central School District for 20 years prior to … Read more

The 404 1,079: Where we ban all the skinnies (podcast)

On today's 404 episode, we'll solve the mystery of phantom cell phone vibrations and why we're so often tricked into thinking our phones have a mind of their own. One psychologist from the University of Sydney thinks that it has to do with electrical currents running through parts of the body surrounding the phone, while another professor of psychology believes it's in ours heads, that our addiction to technology has made us paranoid about e-notifications.

Walking around New York in this heatwave is enough of a workout for anyone these days, but some gym-goers in Canada are so sick of skinny people making them look bad that they've issued a ban on anyone that can't be described as "plus size."

According to the NY Daily News, Body Exchange gym in Vancouver claims to be a "safe haven" for overweight people that feel scrutinized when they work out next to those without an addiction to food. Unfortunately, we'll have to defer to Richard to comment on this story, as neither Jeff nor I have ever been inside a gym.… Read more

Microsoft reveals more on plight of Netbook sales

Microsoft revealed more about the plight of Netbook sales in the age of the iPad during the company's third-quarter earnings conference call today. This follows statements by Intel's chief financial officer earlier in the month.

The Redmond, Wash., software giant said today that the consumer PC market declined 8 percent in the most recent quarter and part of that was due to "a 40 percent decline in Netbooks," according to a statement by Bill Koefoed, general manager of investor relations, during the earnings conference call.

Microsoft CFO Liddell leaving; Klein tapped

Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell is leaving the company at the end of the year, the company announced Tuesday.

Liddell has been Microsoft's CFO since 2005, but the past 18 months have been especially long, as Microsoft debated whether to acquire Yahoo and navigated the choppy waters of the recession with its first-ever companywide layoffs. He will be replaced by Peter Klein, who had been serving as CFO of the company's Business Division, which develops and sells Microsoft Office.

In a statement, Liddell said he was looking to do something with his career beyond serving in the … Read more

Eau De P.O.S.: A new hybrid fragrance by Calvin Klein

Banking on the not-so-recent popularity of digital audio, opportunist Calvin Klein is kicking off his latest "We Are One" campaign with a commemorative bottle of the classic CK1 fragrance that features a removable speaker at its base.

Calvin Klein's been a fashion staple since 1968, but we're not sure how much experience the company has with high-end audio. If I had to guess, I'd put my paycheck on "absolutely none whatsoever," and if I'm right, the audio quality of the speaker is probably about as good as a front door intercom.
