NEC laptop is one of the first with Intel's 'Haswell' chip

NEC has apparently jumped the gun, releasing the full specs of a laptop based on Intel's 4th Generation Core processor, aka, Haswell.

That processor, along with a crush of new systems, is slated for rollout on June 3 at Computex in Taiwan.

But NEC is talking specs already in Japan.

In addition to the Haswell chip (about which NEC provided little additional data), the LaVie L will sport a 15.6-inch IPS touch screen (1,920x1,080 resolution), 8GB of memory, 1TB hard drive with a 32GB solid-state drive cache, Windows 8, and Microsoft Office Home and Business.

NEC announces LaVie Light Netbook

NEC has joined the Netbook party with the LaVie Light. The 8.9-inch Netbook will be released--in Japan--on November 6, and when it is, the Sylvania G Netbook can rest easy because the LaVie Light will likely carry the mantle as the lamest Netbook in the land. The NEC LaVie Light serves up the typical Netbook specs--Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, and XP Home--but wraps them in what appears to be a plain, unappealing, boxy black plastic shell. It weighs 2.6 pounds, and the 8.9-inch display features a 1,024x600 resolution. … Read more

NEC's schizophrenic laptop changes again

NEC continues to use its LaVie G laptop as a blank canvas for artistic expression, whether it be for cars or Hello Kitty. In fact, the Japanese giant seems to use any excuse at all to release yet another design for this hapless computer. Case in point: the fourth anniversary of its direct-sales Web site. We're not kidding.

To commemorate this landmark event, NEC is releasing a limited edition of "pimped" laptops with illustrations by Toshiko Kimura, according to Akihabara News. (Who? And what is it about the Japanese obsession with the word "pimp"?) Anyway, … Read more

NEC laptop falls victim to Hello Kitty

Oh my. We don't know where to begin. Is it dimestore-looking Swarovski crystals? The metallic Pepto-Bismol pink? And we wouldn't dare leave out the hideously overdone logo, of course.

No matter how you look at it, there's not much good to say about NEC's "LaVie G Hello Kitty" laptop unless you happen to be one of the unfortunate victims who have consumed the pink Kool-Aid. Akihabara News points out its middling AMD Sempron chip, but the negatives go far beyond that--too many to number here, in fact. But we'll just leave you with … Read more
