Two gaming journo mainstays join Jeff on the show today. 20-year veteran Victor Lucas and his partner-in-crime Scott Jones pick apart the next-generation console wars and opine on what the future of gaming will and, more interestingly, will not be like.… Read more
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- When George Lucas made "Star Wars" in 1976, he probably never imagined that artifacts from that film and the five that followed it would one day inspire a touring exhibition meriting the same fine-arts treatment as a Van Gogh show.
But that's exactly the case with "Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination," a show that opens this Saturday at The Tech Museum of Innovation here. And though the exhibition has been touring for the last eight years, making its way through 19 other American cities, it has never before shown in … Read more
Three types of people generally inhabit costuming (cosplay) culture: those who buy elementary outfits from places like Party City; those who pursue advanced costumes that tally up hundreds of dollars; and truly dedicated folks like Andrew Miller, who invested hundreds of hours into creating his own custom-made Boba Fett getup.
For Miller, a Michigan office worker, being Boba Fett -- or at least looking and acting a whole lot like the intergalactic bounty hunter -- has become a second life of sorts. The pictorial below explores Miller's "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi"-inspired Boba Fett outfit, which took many years of dedicated work, research, and painting -- and, of course, extraordinary attention to detail -- to achieve. … Read more
In "Star Wars," Darth Vader attempted to defend the first Death Star with a modified TIE Fighter known as the TIE Advanced x1. After thousands of hours of hard work, a team of German "Star Wars" fans, calling themselves Project X1, have completed a 2:1 scale model of Vader's personal spaceship.
Based on plans designed by architect Markus Sammann, and using materials such as steel, plastic, and wood, a group of 20 people spent two years creating the 1.43-ton homage. The dimensions of the TIE Advanced x1 mockup -- at 17 feet wide by 14.1 feet high by 15.7 feet long -- would likely amaze any onlooker and certainly arouse any fan of the Empire. Project X1 notes the build is dedicated to "Star Wars" creator George Lucas, the 501st Legion, and fans of the sci-fi saga.… Read more
Thirty-five years ago, sound designer Ben Burtt introduced an early version of legendary "Star Wars" bounty hunter Boba Fett to director George Lucas and select members of the "Empire Strikes Back" production team -- an epic behind-the-scenes moment you can now watch as if you were there.
"The Boba Fett character is really an early version of Darth Vader," George Lucas says in the visual novel The Making of the Empire Strikes Back. "He is also very much like the man-with-no-name from the Sergio Leone Westerns." … Read more
George Lucas and Steven Spielberg -- the two men perhaps most responsible for the model of the summer blockbuster -- see the studios' obsession with such hits putting the in-theater film experience on a crash course -- perhaps with Internet TV there to pick up the pieces.
Studios would rather pour $250 million into one movie to have a shot at a mega-blockbuter than invest in personal, interesting, or historical projects that can get lost in the hubbub of a entertainment-saturated world, Spielberg said Wednesday during a panel discussion at the University of Southern California, according to The Verge and … Read more
Disney said today that it has begun production on "Star Wars Rebels," a new animated television series. It will air in 2014, first as a one-hour special, and then will continue as a regular series.
The special will be shown on the Disney Channel, while the series will air first on Disney XD channels globally, Disney said. It will be produced by LucasFilm Animation.
The announcement that production has commenced on "Star Wars Rebels" comes just two months after Disney shut down "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," a popular and long-running cartoon series. What's unclear is whether the announcement of "Star Wars Rebels" will do anything to ease the enmity toward Disney that has sprung up in the wake of the "Clone Wars" shutdown, as well as the closure of LucasArts, the video game arm of LucasFilm. … Read more
NICASIO, Calif. -- Growing up in the 1960s, Ben Burtt was such a big "Star Trek" fan that when he went off to college at a school where he had no TV, he had his father record the audio from each week's episode and mail it to him.
Sitting in his dorm room, Burtt would listen to the shows with headphones on, taking in each new episode with no pictures. But he didn't need the video to understand what was going on. "It was so vividly portrayed with excellent sound effects," Burtt said, "… Read more
Disney and Electronic Arts said today that the two entertainment giants have signed an exclusive deal under which EA will begin developing and publishing a series of new "Star Wars" video games.
In a release, Disney and EA said that the new "Star Wars" games will be created for "a core gaming audience," and that they will be developed for "all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres."
However, while the deal was termed "exclusive," the announcement noted that Disney will still maintain the right to develop other new … Read more
