Intel has released its first version of Web-based programming tools to help developers make mobile apps for Android and iOS.

The free software, called Intel XDK, isn't brand new. It's a rebadged version of the AppMobi software that Intel acquired in February. XDK lets people create software that uses the so-called HTML5 foundation, a collection of standards designed to advance the Web beyond static documents toward dynamic applications, then convert those apps so they can be used on mobile devices.

In a study released yesterday, the mobile ad network discovered that 41 percent of mobile users in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada will buy the new iPhone, with 50 percent of those planning to pick one up within the first six months of the phone's debut. Android is the top mobile platform in North America, according to mobile ad network InMobi, but the iPhone's iOS is close behind thanks to a recent surge.

InMobi's Mobile Insights Report for April found that Google's Android remained in the lead among mobile platforms in North America with 37 percent of all ad impressions on its network, a slight increase from January. However, the launch of the Verizon iPhone in February helped boost Apple's share of ad impressions by 9.4 percentage points to 33 percent.

Video-content provider MobiTV is expanding beyond its familiar mobile market to reach the living room and office.

The company, which offers live and on-demand TV shows for mobile phones, is branching out into Internet-connected TVs, set-top boxes, and personal computers. The goal is to offer a TV-anywhere type of service in which subscribers can catch live news and sports as well as on-demand TV shows no matter where they are.
