HP revamps consumer desktop lineup

HP unveiled three new towers for its consumer desktop line this morning. The Pavilion, slim tower Slimline, and higher-end Pavilion Elite series all received new external designs. HP wasn't overly specific regarding the new hardware specifications in the new systems, but we do know HP is bringing Intel's second-generation Core (aka Sandy Bridge) CPUs to certain models in all three new systems.

HP updates Pavilion Slimline desktops

In keeping with its tradition of regular quarterly updates, HP brings word that its Pavilion Slimline desktops have been brought up to the s5700 series. We reviewed a higher-end s5600 Slimline a few months ago and found it one of the better slim towers we'd reviewed recently. The new s5710f and s5730f appear to be more modest configurations, aimed at budget-oriented retail shoppers.

Dell puts Inspiron desktop on a diet

Dell is taking the Inspiron desktop and minimizing it.

The new Inspiron Slim and Inspiron Mini-Tower start at $299 and have a variety of exterior hues from which to choose. There are eight colors (all of which sound like shades of polo shirts available at J. Crew): piano black, pure white, true blue, formula red, tangerine orange, spring green, plum purple, and flamingo pink.

You may recognize these, since CNET actually got a sneak peek at them during a visit to Dell's design lab in Austin, Texas, earlier this month.
