Play slots with classic 'The Price is Right' games and icons

The App Store has created a number of interesting crossover games in the last few years. From branded iOS games to crossovers between Angry Birds and various films, existing brands are seeing the wisdom of investing in fun, short spurts of gaming on the iPad or iPhone to reach their audience. The Price is Right Slots is just such a game, marrying the compulsive game play of other gambling and coin-operated games with the classic price-guessing games and imagery of the long running TV show.

This game is similar to many others in the niche. After installation, you can choose … Read more

Tackle Apple's Memory Utility repeatedly loading at boot

When you install memory in most Mac systems, provided everything went well, the computer will simply boot with a new memory capacity. However, on the Mac Pro you might see a tool called Apple Memory Utility launch to indicate a new memory configuration has been detected.

This tool should show only once and state whether or not the installed memory is in the recommended slot configuration for optimal performance. In some cases, however, this tool may load every time you boot the system after upgrading. While it can be dismissed by pressing the OK button, having it load each time … Read more

Gambleville: Zynga brings more slots to social gaming

Zynga is preparing to launch a new slots game, bringing even more attention to the social-gaming company's efforts to become a legit gambling destination.

Zynga touted the game, titled Zynga Elite Slots, this week, following news of the company preparing to set itself up for a gambling license in Nevada. Modeled after the computerized slot machines glittering inside the dark casinos of the Las Vegas Strip, Zynga Elite Slots doesn't use real money -- yet.

But don't ask the game's Austin, Texas-based design directors, Josh Gause and Nathan Ratcliffe, when that will happen. All they want … Read more

Play realistic slots on your Android device with Slot Machine Deluxe

It used to be that you had to go to Las Vegas to play the real slots. Then more casinos gave more players access to real Vegas-style slot machines, and online slots just sweetened the pot. Now you can play casino-style slots with Slot Machine Deluxe, a free Android app (you can buy more coins, though). We installed it on a Samsung smartphone running Ice Cream Sandwich.

Slot machine opens with two carousels of Slots displayed, though all but the first are locked. Before we started playing, we tapped the Settings icon, but the only changes involved turning off the … Read more

Spin that machine in Slots Journey

Slots Journey is the free iOS app for every casino game player who has some free minutes to fill. Its design and user interface serve one single aim: to bet money and win money back while having fun in a virtual casino, standing in front of a slot machine.

We liked how Slots Journey went beyond a typical virtual casino game and implemented the idea of a journey as a tweak to the slot machine app. The starting point is Egypt, followed by China, "Islands," Greece, Transylvania, Texas, and Australia, and each place has several levels to go … Read more

Persistent boot messages return for Mac Pro users in Mountain Lion

Some Mac Pro users who have upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion may see an apparent warning window display whenever the system is rebooted. The message appears to be properly formatted and even contains a picture of a Mac Pro suggesting the message has purpose; however, instead of containing any sensible message, it displays text strings like "keyApplicationTitle" and "keyOKButton" where text ought to be.

This error window was noticed by a number of people using OS X Lion when the 10.7.4 update was released, and it was found to be from Apple's … Read more

Interactive slot machine bets on gambling's future

SAN FRANCISCO--This interactive slot machine with a 46-inch touch screen is one of the more eye-catching displays at this week's Intel Developer Forum here.

In a nutshell, this machine is an electronic gaming machine, a point-of-sale device, a digital sign (the panel above the main screen), and a kiosk all rolled into one. Of course, it comes with the prerequisite handle, a holder for a martini glass, and Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system. No word on when we'll see one of these commercially. So far it is only a proof-of-concept for a "connected" casino. But … Read more

How to use mini or other nonstandard optical discs on your Mac

Most optical discs are a standard 12cm in diameter, are round, and besides some potential manufacturing incompatibilities with certain optical drives, are expected to load and be recognized in most systems. Despite this, some companies will distribute device drivers or other content on mini or oddly shaped optical discs.

While the novelty of nonstandard discs is fun, it does pose a problem for many systems that cannot read them. While there is no difference in the way the discs are read, the odd shapes will get them stuck in many slot-loading drives seen in MacBooks, MacBook Pros, Mac Minis, and … Read more

Slot of fun

Randy Vandermolen Slot Machine offers a digital way to challenge the one-armed bandit. Easy to set up and operate, this little bit of virtual Vegas won't make you forget the real thing, but it is a fun substitute for the home casino.

For such a simple premise, the interface was surprisingly confusing at first. With a beach-themed slot machine staring us in the face, we just couldn't understand how to get started. Luckily, there's a very visual Help file that clarifies the process of playing, which in fact is quite simple. The program works exactly like a … Read more

Sansa Clip+ could boost slotMusic and slotRadio

SanDisk's new Sansa Clip+ sounds like a solid choice for an inexpensive MP3 player, but I'm more interested in how it could boost SanDisk's slotMusic and slotRadio--two types of microSD cards preloaded with music.

When first announced last year, slotMusic seemed like a misfire: I couldn't imagine why consumers would pay almost the same price as a CD for a microSD card loaded with lower-quality files. The release of the $19.99 slotMusic player changed my opinion a little bit, but it still seemed too limiting: the only way to get music onto the device through … Read more
