Sorenson to shrink video links with Vid.vu

If you thought the recent fracas with the Libyan government and .ly domains had put an end to cute, shortened URLs you'd be wrong.

Today, Sorenson Media, a proprietary video codec and video software company, unveiled the latest shortener service, called Vid.vu, which it says has been built to simplify sharing and tracking of video pages.

Webware Radar: Alltop launches personal pages

RSS repository Alltop announced that it has launched a new feature called MyAlltop that allows users to create a custom page to which they can add the feeds they care about.

The widgets can be viewed on that single page and shared with others. In order to create a MyAlltop page, visitors will be required to register for the site. Once they do, they can click an icon next to the feed to add it to their page. The feature is available now.

Medical device inventor James Sorenson dies

James LeVoy Sorenson, the billionaire entrepreneur and founder of the Sorenson Companies, died of cancer on Sunday. He was 86.

Sorenson Companies developed such technologies as the Sorenson Squeeze, a digital video compression and encoding technology.

And more recently, the company launched a social-networking genealogy Web site in October that incorporates the use of DNA testing called GeneTree.

Sorenson, however, is best known for the medical devices he invented, such as the first disposable surgical masks, blood recycling systems, and computer systems that provide real-time heart monitoring.

Sorenson is survived by his wife, eight children, 47 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.… Read more
