Sun unveils open-source storage line

Sun Microsystems unveiled Monday its Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems line, as it seeks to turn around its ailing business by once again turning to open source.

The Sun Storage 7000 line, formerly known as "Amber Road," is intended to bolster the company's storage business by adding open source to its hardware, in a move to make it easier for customers to install and configure the systems and reduce costs. The line will be part of the company's Unified Storage Systems.

Sun's biggest shareholder looks to 'maximize value'

Correction, 11:08 a.m. PDT: This story initially misstated the source of a report about Southeastern. It is IDG.

Something is about to happen at Sun. Unfortunately, no one outside the company seems to know what that "something" is.

As reported in Barron's, Southeastern Asset Management, Sun's largest institutional investor, just upped its stake in Sun to 21.2 percent and recently filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to indicate that it has significant plans for Sun:

The filing says that Southeastern "has talked to" Sun's management, and will … Read more

Don't you think Sun would love a do-over on StorageTek?

In June 2005, long before most people ever heard of subprime, LIBOR, or credit default swaps, Sun Microsystems thought it was a grand idea to buy StorageTek for the princely sum of $4.1 billion. At the time, the thinking at Sun was to become more of a one-stop shop for its corporate clientele. On paper, at least, it sounded like a plausible idea.

But that was a veritable eternity ago. With the market's sudden meltdown in the last month, corporate spending--at least on Sun's products and service--has been hit especially hard. So it was that Sun warned this afternoon of a wider loss on lower revenue.Read more

Who is buying Sun?

The Register's Ashley Vance started stirring the pot with the suggestion that Fujitsu should buy Sun, given that its market capitalization is down to $7 billion. IBM's Savio Rodrigues steered clear of suggesting that IBM would be a fit (too much overlap), but veers toward an HP acquisition.

Me? I think if someone were to acquire Sun, EMC would make a lot of sense, even despite Sun's StorageTek overlap. That could be spun out and sold. I think the combination of EMC storage hardware and Sun's Solaris hardware could prove a tempting combination for financial services, … Read more

Sun: 2008 'tipping point' for solid-state drives

2008 is the year of the solid state drive. That's what Sun Microsystems believes as reliability finally measures up to the rigorous requirements of server storage and the cost per gigabyte plunges.

On Wednesday, Sun announced that it is preparing to introduce solid-state drive (SSD) technology that "will completely change how server and storage infrastructure is designed and deployed in enterprise data centers." Sun said it is already shipping Solaris ZFS software "optimized" for SSDs.

Though Sun is not specifying suppliers, Intel confirms that it has collaborated with Sun on SSD development for servers. Intel … Read more

Sun open-sources digital archiving

Sun Microsystems continues to run amok in the open-source world, open-sourcing software in every direction. Today, it is in the direction of digital-archiving software, which has been used to capture and maintain "business images, records, consumer- and corporate-created digital content, e-science work, and high-performance computing (HPC) data for hundreds of years."

How does Sun expect to make money? In this case, it's the hardware, which makes a lot of sense:… Read more
