The most coveted domains, from .app to .home

In a sea of popular words, who would have guessed .app would be the most sought after domains?

"App" garnered 13 applications for a top-level-domain, also known as a string. The full details on the applications were revealed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Named and Numbers today. The introduction of new TLDs change the way consumers will type in URLs and open up new possibilities for Web addresses.

It's telling that .app was the most popular domain name, an illustration of the importance of having a solid app ecosystem, particularly in the mobile world. Among the … Read more

iOS 5.1 code hints new iPhone could have 4G LTE

Apple's new iPad has been receiving much high praise for its Retina Display, the showcase feature during its unveiling earlier this month, but the inclusion of a 4G LTE-capable option has prompted quite a few discussions over whether Apple's new iPhone will be 4G-ready.

According to Krishna Sagar, a tipster writing to iDownload Blog, Apple is definitely working on a 4G LTE iPhone, and iOS 5.1 has the code to prove it.

Using iFile on a jailbroken iPhone 4 (running iOS 5.1, of course) Sagar was able to find code strings indicating 4G connectivity actions during … Read more

Low-tech posters use tin can and string to promote band

Forget spending countless hours and dollars on a viral video--hello OK Go!--one band is doing viral the old fashioned way.

You probably haven't heard of Dry The River, but come this March you will, and if you're in London it will be via the old fashioned "lover's phone": a tin can on a string.

Twelve posters are scattered around London which, if you hold the can up to your ear, will play a track from Dry The River's new album "Shallow Bed."

The posters feature animals constructed from wires pulled from … Read more

3D video from Kinect used for AR silliness on iPad 2

What happens when you mash up a bunch of buzzword technologies together in one video? Look no further than the below presentation, titled "Augmented Reality 3d Video on iPad with Kinect."

iOS developer Laan Labs yesterday demonstrated a concept app (created with the String AR SDK) that can use video captured from Microsoft's Kinect as augmented-reality content when viewed through an iPad 2 camera. This means that one day you could possibly record a video of yourself on a Kinect camera, transfer the data to an AR card, and send a virtual 3D movie greeting of yourself to someone. This could really unleash creative possibilities for your mother-in-law's next birthday card. … Read more

Super searcher

The built-in Windows search utility works fine for a lot of search tasks, but sometimes you need to search with something a little more powerful. MultiFind is a basic Windows search tool that has many of the same features as the built-in Windows search, but includes a few useful extras, including a replace feature.

The program's interface is plain and fairly easy to figure out. The basic search parameters include the search path, file name, and file contents. Users can also opt to search only hidden or read-only files, as well as perform case-sensitive searches and search for whole … Read more

Full of problems

Batch-processing programs can be a lifesaver if you need to rename or add special characters to a large number of files. Rename aims to do just that: rename multiple files in one fell swoop. Unfortunately, a poorly designed user interface and lack of results failed to impress us.

Right off the bat, we were turned off by the program's interface. A tiny window appeared with all of its commands squeezed into the left corner of the window. We thought for sure that maximizing the window would remedy the clutter, but it did not. Radio buttons next to vague renaming … Read more

Trick Gmail into thinking you're on an iPad for two-pane goodness

Google on Friday announced that it's got an iPad-centric version of its Gmail Web app that gives users a two-pane reading view of their in-boxes. The funny thing is, you don't even get this on the normal version of Gmail, or on most mobile clients.

You can, however, trick Gmail into thinking you're on an iPad with some tweaking. All that needs to be done is to change the browser's user agent, which can be done with just a small amount of effort on some browsers. Here's how to do it in three of them (… Read more

Music label seeks realism in iTunes guitar app

Up to now, rocking out with guitar-playing simulators has typically been about pushing buttons or bars.

Universal Music Group, the largest of the four top record companies, is trying to inject more realism into the experience with a new music app designed for the iPhone and iPod. The game is called Six String and is expected to debut Wednesday at the iTunes App store.

The game, which will sell for $4.99, is similar to the biggie guitar-simulation games: Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Players are directed to the proper strings with a scrolling series of dots and arrows, according … Read more

Power Gig, a music game with real guitars

Announced Tuesday at the start of the Game Developers Conference, Power Gig: Rise of the SixString is a novel approach to the well-trod music game genre.

Instead of using plastic simulations of guitars that are essentially just dressed-up plastic game controllers, the game uses fully functional six-string guitars that control the game, but can also be played in real life.

As one might imagine, the game is being developed by a company connected with the guitar business. Developer/publisher Seven45 Studios is a sister company of First Act, a leading musical-instrument maker responsible for making the entry-level guitars, basses, and … Read more
