Samsung Galaxy S4 keyboard powered by SwiftKey

Samsung's new flagship device has officially been unveiled, and it has a lot of new features packed in. But what many aren't talking about is the device's on-screen keyboard, which, arguably, is one of the most important aspects of its interface.

In an attempt to improve on its previous flagship phone, Samsung has partnered with third-party keyboard maker SwiftKey to have its proprietary technology built into the Galaxy S4 keyboard.

Despite not knowing the extent of the companies' partnership as yet, we think the move looks like a solid one. Samsung gets some ultrapowerful typing technology to … Read more

Google looking for Glass Explorers

Wednesday's CNET Update does a barrel roll:

Google wants you to fall in love with the idea of a computer on your face. It has released another promo video showing what Google Glass could do (even though it's not a real product yet), and launched a contest for a chance to buy a $1,500 prototype. But as Forbes points out, people are using the #ifihadglass hashtag contest to point out the drawbacks of Glass.

Today's tech news roundup also looks at the redesign of Yahoo's home page, and the updated SwiftKey app for Android.

Taylor Swift lets Twitter followers follow her in person

When one of your mentors does yet one more thing to confirm the validity of her mentorship, you have to sit back and admire.

I am, therefore, glazed-eyed with admiration at Taylor Swift, who this week is taking Twitter into the real world.

Swift, my mentor for all things love-related, is launching a new album called "Red."

Because she is a dedicated professional, she is promoting this opus far and wide. However, she has chosen to step beyond the confines of social media to interact with some of her followers in person.… Read more

For better Android typing: SwiftKey 3

One area the iPhone has held its own against Android phones I've used is the responsiveness of the touch-screen keyboard. But one area where I think Android has shown more innovation better predictive typing. Which is why I was happy to see the release of SwiftKey 3 today.

The software one-ups the predictive typing abilities of Android's built-in keyboard, learning from your own typing to offer not just the next letters in a word, but also the next word, too. Hitting the spacebar completes the action. (When you start typing, the first word it suggests is "I,&… Read more

Cute Pantech Swift messaging phone joins AT&T for $69.99

AT&T is trotting out a new QWERTY messaging phone, the Pantech Swift, going on sale today.

With its lavender accents, there's little question of Pantech's young audience, and the compact phone is appropriately priced at $69.99 with two-year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate.

The QWERTY keyboard, by the way, supplements the otherwise too-small 2.8-inch QVGA touch screen. Pantech has also added some curvature -- a slightly curved screen that also angles up when you slide it open. Button-pushers will also get a single hardware select button beneath the phone's face.

SwiftKey 3 Beta: The best Android keyboard I've seen

SwiftKey 3 Beta, the newest version of the incredibly popular Android replacement keyboard, is now available to SwiftKey's VIP Community members. And from what I've seen so far, it is something for the public to be excited about.

If you're not familiar with SwiftKey, it is a Google Play Editors' Choice app, and it won the coveted Most Innovative App award at this year's Global Mobile Awards in Barcelona, Spain. What sets it apart from other replacement keyboards is its ability to understand not just patterns in your typing, but also how words work together. This … Read more

Not quite as advertised

We love a good adventure game, and Samantha Swift and the Hidden Roses certainly qualifies, as long as solving puzzles meets your criteria for adventure. As much as we enjoyed the game, however, we were quite put off by all of the advertising and uninvited bloatware that comes along with it.

Samantha Swift looks like it's going to be a lightweight program at just over 720K, but all that download really includes is the Free Ride Games Player. The actual game must be downloaded using the player, and at 112MB, it's not nearly as small as you may … Read more

Start recording video faster with your iOS device

Quick, grab your phone, we should be recording this!

If you have a toddler who is learning to talk or walk or reach other video-worthy milestones, you've either heard or uttered these words frequently and recently. Same goes for owners of hilariously curious cats, I'd imagine.

Even if you have your phone in hand, you can still miss a shot, as you mistakenly take a still shot with your iPhone's camera app, then scramble to move the slider over and start recording video. Well, no more! The recently released Swift app by CodeGoo lets you start capturing video faster. Granted, it saves only a few seconds compared with using the iPhone's native camera app, but sometimes only a few seconds is the difference between getting the shot and missing it.… Read more

Stop-motion Suzuki builds itself (video)

Building a car is no easy feat. Creating a time-lapse video of the building of a car adds an element of complexity. However, creating a cohesive stop-motion video documenting the in-garage assembly of a rallying Suzuki Swift GTi over the course of many months, while cool, is downright insane.

Fortunately, Michal Bakiewicz is insane. He's done just that and published his video to YouTube. Check the video out below to see (or rather, not see) Michal in action.

SwiftKey for Honeycomb: Speed typing on tablets

Keyboard replacement app SwiftKey will get a version designed specifically for tablets running the new version of Android, Honeycomb. A complete redesign gives users a way to type with two hands in landscape mode.

SwiftKey is essentially a modern version of predictive text. As you type, the software predicts the most likely word, letter by letter. You can then select that word directly, which should help you save time and prevent horrific spelling mistakes.

We've been using the phone version of SwiftKey for some time, and we're happy with it, although it's not quite as quick or … Read more
