To understand where teens like to spend their virtual time nowadays, just watch them on their smartphones. Their world revolves around Instagram, the application adults mistook for an elevated photography service, and other apps decidedly less old-fashioned than Mark Zuckerberg's social network.

Facebook: Teens might be so over us

Facebook has a new, potentially more troubling problem than mobile. The social network can't seem to keep its youngest users oh-so-totally preoccupied with its apps and services -- be they Web or mobile.

Facebook's teen users are switching their attention to other applications, the company warned in the risks section of its 10-K annual report, which was filed today with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Pew study: Parents of teens online worry about ads, strangers

Parents are more worried about advertisers having access to their children's online data than about their children talking to strangers online, according to a report published today.

The Pew Internet Project and the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University collaborated on the report, which is based on a survey if 802 parents of children aged 12 to 17 with questions about social-networking sites, namely Facebook. How Instagram became the social network for tweens

I just learned that my 12-year-old daughter is an app scofflaw. So, in fact, are the hordes of her fellow tween-agers -- kept off Facebook by their well-intended parents -- who have turned to Instagram as a seemingly innocuous social-network workaround.

As it turns out, just like Facebook, you technically have to be 13 to have an Instagram account. And, just like Facebook, Instagram is more or less a social network, dark sides included. YouTube is teens' No. 1 pick for music listening

Gone are the days of teenagers buying albums and listening to them all the way through, as are the days of following beloved radio DJs and tuning in at the appropriate times. The new generation is opting for their own music curating by means of YouTube, according to a new study released today by consumer research firm Nielsen.

Chicago teens charged in fatal beating posted on Facebook

The three Chicago teens who allegedly posted a Facebook video in which they allegedly beat a disabled man and left him with fatal injuries were charged with first-degree murder, according to CBS and the Associated Press.

The suspects, identified as 16-year-old Malik Jones, 17-year-old Nicholas Ayala and 18-year-old Anthony Malcolm, allegedly attacked 62-year-old Delfino Mora in an alley early Tuesday. Mora was found hours later and taken to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition. He died Wednesday afternoon from blunt force trama, according to report.
