Devouring Moto's Devour

Just days after I first got to touch it at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, I have the Motorola Devour in my hands. Also known as the Calgary (blame Canada!), the Devour is Verizon's third Google Android phone and its first handset with MotoBlur.

I'll have a full review for you soon, but I can offer some initial impressions in the meantime. The earlier analysis indicating that the Devour looks like the Moto's Droid's little brother is indeed true. The Devour is about the same size and shape as its predecessor, but its tapered ends … Read more

Messaging phones will cost you

One of the biggest cell phone trends of 2009 was the rapid rise of quick messaging handsets. Not quite a smartphone and made for more than making calls, quick messaging models like the Samsung Impression typically offer QWERTY keyboards, support for 3G networks, and a full HTML browser. And depending on the carrier, GPS, streaming video, and music downloads may be onboard as well.

Messaging phones have become popular because they appeal to consumers who want more than a basic device--particularly one that is centered on texting--but don't want the extra features and required data plan that come with a smartphone. On that last point, however, the landscape is changing quickly.

As customers began to take advantage of the needed features on messaging phones, carriers wanted to capitalize on the extra revenue involved. Verizon Wireless was first out of the gate last year when it required customers purchasing a Samsung Rogue and an LG enV Touch to select one of two data plans ($9.99 for 25MB of data and unlimited e-mail or $29.99 for unlimited data and e-mail). And last month, the carrier added the data plan requirement to five other quick-messaging devices. As my colleague Maggie Reardon wrote then, Verizon instituted the plans because it doesn't want customers to be upset if they incurred expensive data charges from services that they didn't realize they were using.… Read more

Samsung Saga, Renown debut for Verizon Wireless

Samsung continues its new phone onslaught with two handsets for Verizon Wireless, the Samsung Saga and the Samsung Renown. The two models rest at opposite ends of the feature spectrum so mobile users of all stripes should find something for them.

The Samsung Saga (aka the SCH-i770) is a Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard and a 2.55-inch touch screen. It reminds us vaguely of the Samsung Blackjack, but it sports a blue color scheme, a curvier bottom, and redesigned controls. The dual-mode CDMA/GSM device supports a full range of Microsoft application, such as … Read more

Rumor: Verizon could carry LiMo devices

Rumors are afoot that Verizon Wireless will announce new cell phones based on the LiMo Foundation's mobile Linux operating system. Unstrung did not reveal its source, but the publication reported Friday that the nation's second largest carrier could make an announcement by this Monday.

Verizon has yet to even suggest that it would adopt LiMo devices, but the LiMo gossip does make sense. After years of exercising almost total control of its devices, the carrier stunned the cell phone world last November when it announced that it would start allowing unlocked devices on its CDMA network. Then last … Read more

Verizon phones to show YouTube

If you can't get enough of exploding Mentos in Diet Coke bottles or the guy who showcases the history of dance, Verizon Wireless has some good news for you. The carrier announced today that it signed a deal with YouTube to bring a limited number of videos to Verizon's 3G handsets starting in early December. Users also will be able to use their phone's camcorders to record their own videos to share with other Verizon customers or YouTube viewers. Granted, the video quality from a camera phone won't be spectacular but if you want to catch … Read more
