With the arrival of iOS 7, iPhone and iPad users received a smattering of Instagram-style visual-effect filters for snapping photos. But they can't be used when shooting video.
Enter Spotliter Video, a free app that provides a choice of distinctive filters for video recording. It is, quite simply, like Instagram for video, though without the integrated sharing options.
It works like this: fire up the app, then tap to choose an effect from the scrolling selector along the bottom. Spotliter offers a dozen of them, but not just the usual assortment of sepia, black-and-white, and so on.
Rather, you … Read more
Apple's App Store has a new set of pirates.
Game maker Ubisoft has released Assassin's Creed: Pirates for iOS. The game is essentially a pirate simulator, allowing gamers to engage in naval combat, build up their pirate ship, and explore the Caribbean. Gamers play as Alonzo Batilla.
The Assassin's Creed franchise has been extremely popular on consoles. The latest launch, Black Flag, is also set on the open seas and features pirates. Black Flag is available on consoles, but not on iOS.
Assassin's Creed: Pirates is available in Apple's App Store for $4.99. It … Read more
Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime made abundantly clear in a recent interview that his company's direction is driven by strategy and not the changing desires of its fan base.
In an interview with Siliconera published on Wednesday, Fils-Aime was asked how does "what fans want or say influence [his] decisions." His response, which centered mainly on petitions brought to Nintendo by fans asking them to bring legacy games to newer devices, was telling of Nintendo's view of the market.
"I have to tell you -- it doesn't affect what we do," Fils-Aime … Read more
I've shared a lot of Roku deals in recent months, usually for lower-end and/or discontinued models. Make no mistake, they're great, but it's always nice to go top-of-the-line when you can.
Today, for example, while supplies last, 1Sale (formerly 1SaleADay) has the refurbished Roku 3 streaming media player for $69.99 shipped. That's $30 less than you'd pay for a new one, and the lowest price I've seen for Roku's top-of-the-line box.
I'm not going to spend much time covering Roku basics, as I think most readers already know what the … Read more
VideoBlend for Mac offers a set of video editing tools that are easy enough for just about everyone to use. With an intuitive interface and some really useful features, VideoBlend is a great option for users who want to get started editing videos and have some fun in the process.
The app's interface is attractive and easy to navigate, with clearly labeled icons across the top. One thing we loved about VideoBlend right off the bat was that its interface is notably uncluttered compared to many other video editing programs. It's easy to open files to work with … Read more
Microsoft's Project Spark, an ambitious attempt on the company's part to turn gamers into developers, is making its debut on Windows 8.1 on Tuesday.

It's a great time to be a cord-cutter. You've got Netflix for movies and past-season TV shows, Hulu Plus for current major-network offerings, Aereo for local channels, and PlayOn for all your basic-cable stations: Comedy Central, Food Network, HGTV, Syfy, TBS, and loads of others.
Of course, one of PlayOn's big shortcomings has been its lack of HD support. That changes today with the introduction of PlayOn HD, which brings 720p video to the mix. And its companion product, PlayLater, now supports HD as well.
All of which brings us to today's deal. For a limited … Read more
Sony's PlayStation 4 has hit another important milestone, some two weeks after the console launched.
Sony on Tuesday announced that global PlayStation 4 sales have reached 2.1 million units worldwide. The company was quick to point out that the tally includes actual sales to consumers and not merely shipments into the retail channel.
The PlayStation 4 hit North America on November 15 and quickly became a sales hit. Sony announced at that time that it sold 1 million PlayStation 4 units in just 24 hours to customers in the US and Canada. On November 29, the company launched … Read more
