Cricket to offer BlackBerry Curve 8530

LAS VEGAS--In addition to the Kyocera Zio, Cricket Wireless is set to bring a new BlackBerry to its lineup. The carrier confirmed at CTIA 2010 that it will offer the RIM BlackBerry Curve 8530, but pricing or a specific availability date was not released at this time.

The AWS (Advanced Wireless Service)-compatible device is largely similar to the CDMA versions of the Curve 8530 available from Verizon Wireless and Sprint. For more information about the device, check out our review of the RIM BlackBerry Curve 8530.

Knocking Live Video: Broadcast live video between iPhone and Android

Here's an interesting solution to a problem you may not have known you had. How to share the moments of your life, live, with others. Knocking Live Video is a free video-sharing app for iPhone, and now for Android, that broadcasts live video from one smartphone to another.

There's nothing new about live streaming video on these platforms or others. Qik is a free service that similarly broadcasts live video from smartphones and feature phones to the internet. However, Qik can be public or private , whereas Knocking Live Video is currently only private, and Qik streams to the … Read more

Moto Devour on sale at Verizon stores

Verizon Wireless announced today that the Motorola Devour is now on sale in the carrier's stores for $149.99 with a two-year service contract and a $100 mail-in rebate. Verizon originally introduced the Devour in February, but only made it available in select Best Buy stores.

As we say in our review, there's much to admire about the Devour. We love its sturdy casing, the feature set is functional, and the performance is agreeable. We also dig the quirky thumbpad next to the bright, though somewhat small, display. On the downside, we're wondering why we only got … Read more

Verizon to launch app store

LAS VEGAS--To many people's disappointment, we didn't see any handset news from Verizon Wireless at CTIA 2010, but the carrier did announce that it will launch its own app store on March 29, among an already crowded field of app stores.

The V Cast Apps store will be available first on the RIM BlackBerry Storm 2, but will be rolled out to additional devices in the next few weeks. The store will complement other stores, such as BlackBerry App World and Android Market, but hopes to leverage itself by allowing customers to bill app purchases directly to their … Read more

Hands-on with the Dell Aero; well, sort of

LAS VEGAS--It's been a long time since we've seen a handheld device from Dell (moment of silence for the Dell Axim PDAs please), so you could say we were pretty anxious to check out the Dell Aero in person.

The Aero is Dell's first U.S. smartphone and AT&T's second Android device (after the Motorola Backflip) that will be available in the coming months. Dell was on hand at the Mobile Focus event at CTIA 2010 on Tuesday night with the Aero. Unfortunately, the company was apparently under strict orders by AT&T … Read more

Closer look at the Kyocera Zio

LAS VEGAS--Over the last few years, Kyocera has been a reliable presence at CTIA. It's had one of the best-looking booths on the show floor, it's always introduced phones, and those new handsets have stuck to the basics. This year, however, Kyocera partly broke with tradition. It still had a spiffy booth, but its new phone, the Zio M600, is hardly a low-end device.

As we told you Tuesday, the Zio is Kyocera's first Android handset and the company's first smartphone in six years (remember the 7135?). The Zio (pronounced Zeye-oh) packs the standard Android features … Read more

BlackBerry e-mail utility Bccthis helps you talk about people behind their backs

There's no shortage of e-mail utilities for BlackBerry phones, and a new one entered the market this week. Like Gwabbit (review) and Xobni, Bccthis began as an Outlook add-on and migrated to the next most popular intersection of business users--the BlackBerry. At CTIA, we got a hands-on demo of the free Bccthis for BlackBerry.

As with the desktop version, Bccthis adds a component to the e-mail composition screen on BlackBerry where you can send a private message to one or more of the message recipients. The recipients receive the original message, plus a second one detailing the private note. … Read more

It's been a long wait but the HTC HD2 is officially available for purchase from T-Mobile starting today. You can buy the mega-multimedia smartphone for $199.99 with a two-year service agreement or $449.99 with an Even More Plus Plan, which doesn't require an annual contract.

However, could the timing be any worse? People are all abuzz over the just-announced HTC Evo 4G for Sprint and smartphone fans are anxious for Windows Phone 7 Series devices to debut this holiday season. With all this great stuff on the horizon, is there any interest left in the HD2? … Read more
