CTIA Fall 2009: A preview

As we greet the changing colors of autumn, so too do we greet the fall CTIA show. Typically a smaller event when compared to the big spring show, the fall event still deals with all things wireless and mobile. This year our colleagues Bonnie Cha and Kent German from reviews, Maggie Reardon from News.com, and Jessica Dolcourt from Download.com will be scouring the show floor in San Diego to bring you the latest news in the mobile industry.

While we don't expect huge news, we do expect to get some hands-on time with the Motorola Cliq Google … Read more

Enjoy your iPhone hands-free with Gorillamobile

Are you an avid cyclist who wants to use the iPhone as your GPS navigator? Joby has something for you.

The maker of the recently introduced Gorillatorch announced Thursday its newest iteration of something that can stay really well on something else: the Gorillamobile for the iPhone 3G(S).

This is basically a tripod docking station for the phone which, apart from keeping the phone on any surfaces, can help securely attach the phone to object of different shapes, such as the driving bar of a bicycle.

The key to making the tripod work the way Joby claims it does … Read more

Case-Mate I.D. adds extra pouch to iPhone

I'm not a fan of protective case for gadgets (which, as long as they function, are fine the way they are, even with a few scratches). For this reason, the only things I've put on my iPhone 3GS so far, and only when I travel, are the Mophie Juice packs, which add more battery life to the phone.

I just, however, found a new protective case that I actually am going to use more regularly, for the sake of convenience. It's the Case-Mate I.D. case.

Unlike other protective cases that try to be as slim as … Read more

$5 iPhone stand fits in your wallet

iPhone stands come in all shapes and sizes, from $40 luxury models to no-cost hacks you cobble together yourself.

Personally, I want something that goes where I go, that always rides shotgun, that I won't accidentally forget to bring along.

Something like the GoGoStand, which has the credit-card dimensions necessary to fit in a wallet but unfolds to form a solid, adjustable stand for the iPhone or iPod Touch. (It can work with other devices, too, natch.)

As you can see in the video, the GoGoStand is just a specially cut piece of plastic. But the design is quite … Read more

World's cheapest, ugliest iPhone case

Marketing and PR folks take note. In one of the more brilliant publicity stunts in recent memory, iPhone accessory maker Case-mate is going downscale. Really downscale. And green, too.

It's created a 99-cent cardboard "recession" case along with free "Sharpie Script" personalization (yes, some dude or dudette will inscribe your case by hand). And these babies can be bought in bulk: Case-mate is offering 10 for $7.99.

I'm impressed. This is something you'd expect to see from the Onion News Network, not from a real tech company. And while the recession has … Read more

Hands On: Jabra Halo stereo Bluetooth headset

Cords suck. That's why people who switch to Bluetooth headsets have a hard time going back to the wired kind. And once you've tried a stereo headset, well, you're spoiled for life.

Consider me spoiled. The new Jabra Halo headset cuts the cord in style, giving music and movie fans a terrific wireless listening experience while allowing chatterboxes to keep conversing.

Alas, it's not quite perfect, owing to one design flaw and one technical glitch that's actually Apple's fault.

Smart features are everywhere. For starters, the Halo has no on/off button. Rather, these … Read more

iTwinge: iPhone dream keyboard?

If you're an iPhone owner who just hates typing on the device's virtual keyboard, Mobile Mechatronics has something for you: the iTwinge, a $30 BlackBerry-style, slide-on keyboard that mounts right on the iPhone.

Now iPhone purists are probably thinking this should be called the iCringe, but if you're heavy into texting and e-mailing and aren't proficient with the virtual keyboard, I can see some merit to using this device. However, it obviously covers up a good 40 percent of the iPhone's screen, which would seem problematic.

According to Mobile Mechatronics, the iTwinge Keyboard is a … Read more

iPhone needs buttons for games to be taken seriously

At today's Apple event, the company devoted a generous amount of time to various charts and numbers declaring that the iPhone and the iPod Touch offer much more in terms of gaming than the Sony PSP and the Nintendo DS.

iPhone and iPod Touch games have a lot going for them. The titles are cheaper, they offer tilt functionality, and the graphics are better than what the Nintendo DS can display. All that aside, it's tough to consider the iPhone as a legitimate gaming platform until Apple can offer some sort of tactile button functionality.

First, let's … Read more

Archos Android tablets get unofficial pricing

After making an initial appearance at the FCC in August, a new model of the Archos 5 Internet media tablet popped up on B&H on the first of September.

The product listings briefly showed pricing for four models of the updated Archos 5, as well as a page for the Archos DVR Station. If the listings are accurate, consumers can expect to see 16GB ($293), 32GB ($369), 160GB ($319), and 500GB ($419) versions of the updated Archos 5 in the not too distant future (September 15, maybe?).

The odd pricing discrepancy between the $369 32GB Flash memory model … Read more

Get a 3-in-1 iPhone case for $19.99

The Grabit 3-in-1 is a belt-clip case. It's a battery pack. And it's a kickstand for easy iPhone viewing. (It may also make julienne fries--I'll have to double-check on that.)

Geeks.com has the Grabit 3-in-1 iPhone holster for $19.99, the lowest price I've seen anywhere.

Alas, shipping will run you a fairly ridiculous $9, but you can save a couple bucks by applying coupon code GEEKBERT at checkout.

The Grabit features a swiveling, spring-loaded belt clip that can pop out to hold your iPhone upright on a flat surface. (It should also do well … Read more
