Is this the Windows-based Palm Treo?

Posted by Bonnie Cha
It seems Palm can't keep a secret, even if their life depended on it. We've been hearing rumors about a Windows Mobile-based Treo (the Treo 670 as it was believed) for several months, and Palm Chief Financial Officer Andrew Brown even told our own News.com that such a device could benefit their business but the company would never confirm nor deny the existence of a Treo 670. Now, Engadget appears to have what looks like a pretty darn genuine model of the Treo 700w. There aren't too many details about the smart phone except that according to Engadget, it will run Windows Mobile 5.0, a 1-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, 64MB of memory, and support for EV-DO. From the pictures, it looks like the Treo 700w is a Verizon phone (although we're curious to see what the duct tape is hiding), it's a tad smaller than the Treo 650, and Wi-Fi comes only by way of an SD Wi-Fi card.

Update It looks like the Palm Treo 700w is one step closer to being a reality. Palm, Microsoft, and Verizon have scheduled a press conference for Monday at 9 a.m., Pacific here in San Francisco, and the man himself, Bill Gates, will be there, along with Palm CEO Ed Colligan and Verizon CEO Denny Strigl. We'll be there to cover the event, so stay tuned for more details.

yes, but do you have to reboot your Palm?

I agree about the PPC being better, but do you have to reboot your Palm after every phone call like I have to do with my Axiom after any big program ;)

Windows is the best

Windows and windiws mobile is the best os's out there for a pc or a mobile phone. I will never buy a regular phone agagin. I will only buy WM phones from now on. It is a powerful and stable os compared to the rest. I have owned a Symbian but nothing compares to a WM smart phone. My 2 cents.

Is Palm OS Dead?

Here is a question--if Palm is going Windows, is Palm software
dead? Who else will sell it? This has a direct bearing on my
purchasing decision. I was about to buy an unlocked Treo 650 to
use with my T-Mobile service. I have macs in the office and home,
and I can imagine that, when I update to mactel chips next year, no
one will be around to write the sync software for the older, dying
Palm OS. I guess I had better wait, or buy a Symbian-based phone/
PDA.

Engadget beats Cnet to the story again!

Nice link, I mean story, on the front page of the site, 4 days after Engadget posts this information on there site. Not only does Engadget consistently beat Cnet to every news story, it takes Cnet days after the story, just to post a copy of it. I used to love this site, now you’re doing car reviews (leave it to Edmunds)? Stick to what your good at and stop giving Cooley so much latitude here.
P.S.

windows based treo is a sell out

With all do respect for microsoft but palm is a better operating system for small devices it uses less memory and with as many computer nons out there it is easier. I work in a store where people get turned off by windows pocket or mobile, they want easy to understand and as much memory as possible microsoft is over bloated and a resource hound not good in the small based pocket enviroment of handhelds

What you dont know...

is that Palm will be coming out with another Treo running the PalmOS, and it will have superior hardware. Palm isnt abandoning the OS, thankfully.

Its always good to know someone who knows someone.
