Sidekick 3 exposed by FCC

Posted by Bonnie Cha
Rumors have been trickling down for the past few months about the next-gen Sidekick, but it looks like we finally have some concrete evidence that the Sidekick 3 is for real. Phone Scoop has the latest word, as it stumbled upon the FCC's approval of the next Sidekick. While some documents remain confidential, a few details and images are available for viewing. For example, in a filing for the FCC label location, you can see that the popular messaging device has a removable battery, a 1.3-megapixel camera, and a memory-card slot. In addition, it looks like the hardware has been reworked to include more rounded edges and a new navigation joystick. Finally, it appears the quad-band GSM Sidekick 3 will again be available through T-Mobile, and it includes Bluetooth.

1st EDGE, then my learning experiences

What is EDGE? I've wondered this 4 a while... I guess I'm a total dork... lol
But, despite that, I don't think that it'll be able 2 be used w/ Cingular b/c T-Mobile has it all locked down to thier network.
I'm on Cingular now, and I have checked in to getting a unlocked Sk2, and technically you CAN use it on Cingular, they just don't have support for all of the phone's features.
A Cingular Rep. told me that all u could use the Sidekick 4 was as a phone and 4 texting... which pretty much sucks.. unless ur just into having a really cool phone, then it wouldn't be a problem...
But, I never ended up getting the Sk2, so I don't know 4 sure, just what a couple of Cingular Reps told me, and that all turned out to be the same thing...
I'm 4 sure getting the Sk3, though. Pretty sure it comes out July 10th... and I'm moving 2 T-Mobile partially b/c mostly all of Cingular's services are WAY too overpriced, and b/c I want all the Sidekick's features avalible 2 me.
Just thought that I should let u guys know that b/c I've been trying to figure out this whole thing 4 quite sometime!!
Much Love!!!,
Terryn

Sidekick vs. MDA

I had the same thought, I love my Sidekick ii and use it probably more than anyone has ever, I got the MDA and sent it back in one day of use, it could not keep up with my demands, the keyboard is bad, the blinding blue light is annoying, the drain on the battery is huge if you have the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and are really using the features, then it froze and I had to reset it, all this in one day, I couldn't type half as fast with the MDA as I could with the Sidekick ii, I am waiting for the Sidekick 3 and hopefully I will not be disappointed, I was suprised at CNet for not giving the MDA a more through run through.

That all depends

I have worked with several PDAs including the Sidekick, Pocket PCs of various forms, and several generations of Palm machines.

Long story short, I always loved the palm OS machines but not the newer Treos. Too bad Sony got out of making Palm based systems. They would have made a killer Palm-phone.

PCs good for the most part, I love the easy syncing of MS Office documents, but I work in a lab that exclusively uses Macs. Syncing between my home PC, work Mac was a nightmare.

The sidekick instantly syncs all PDA functions with a web accessible interface. I can get to my info from any computer with web access. No chance of loosing information when the battery goes dead. Wish there was a way of easily syncing and working with MS Office documents (not likely any time soon, but maybe one day).

All-in-all, I am sticking with the Sidekick for now. Keeping my information safe and accessible at home and at work is the most important thing for me in a PDA. The Sidekick delivers that with a keyboard that is better than most.

The sidekick is not quad-band and it has EDGE

The new Sidekick 3 is not quad-band it is tri-band. 850MHz, 1800MHz, and 1900MHz, and it is rumored to have EDGE.

Get The MDA!!

Hey, I have two friends at work who both have the Sidekick 2. I have Cingular's 8125. It is EXACTLY the same as the MDA. It's true. look up both of them. They were manufactured and designed by the same company (HTC), have the same shape, size, and weight, and both run Windows Mobile 5. The MDA can do soooo much more than the Side Kick series of phones. First off, the slide out keyboard is nicer. The Keys are flat, and have a solid click to them; they are not rubber nubs liek the sidekick's. Secondly, the MDA already has a 1.3megapixel camera, and expandable memory. Why would you wanna wait for the side kick 3 to come out for those features. Third, and this one is very important, is that it has a full Internet browser based on HTML 4.1 standard. I know that Tmobile's site says the Side Kick 2 does, but we both know it does not. I went to www.ign.com on both phones (lots of pictures, different fonts, etc. make it a good test site) and the Side Kick only displayed the side menus. The MDA on the other hand, had all the fonts, images, and pictures displayed. In addition, the Side Kick cannot multitask. For instance, running Windows Media Player on my 8125 (MDA for Tmobile) I could listen to my music, and launch Internet Explorer to check out sites or view my email, and still send and receive text messages. Plus, you can minimize programs to run in the background, and still come back to the same page you were on. In addition, the MDA includes Word, Power Point, and Excel. Now, I don't use Excel, but I do use Word and Powerpoint for school. So I have my school email (University of Phoenix) synced to my phone. I had a team member email me a powerpoint presentation we were working on, and I could view it on my phone while I'm on the go! I just got a 1gb card, and when you install active sync, the phone automatically copies your "My Documents" folders over to your phone, up until you run out of space. In addition, you can use midi, wav, and mp3 files as ringtones, message alerts, system alerts, etc. Just copy them to the Windows system folder on the fone for alerts, and the Ringtones folder for ringtones! Saves lots of money and time over purchasing ringtones! Also, being a PDA, you can purchase upgrades, like Dictionaries, mapping programs, games, etc. for this. Can the Side kick do that? I think not, since it is not a Windows or Palm based PDA. In conclusion, the MDA is a far superior device to the Side kick, and as Cnet's video review said, the SideKick is a great "beginner's PDA."
