Really? I can't touch the Palm Pre? Really!?!

Palm Pre

Those are not my hands.

OK, I know I just got done gushing about the third-party apps on the Palm Pre, and I didn't want to take anything away from that, but there's something I need to get off my chest.

Sprint, Palm, what is the deal with not being able to hold and use the Pre with my own two hands? At CES, GSMA 2009, and now CTIA, the companies have required that a Palm or Sprint representative have at least one hand on the smartphone at all times even when we're just trying to take pictures, and we're not allowed to touch certain functionalities, and I just don't get it. What's the purpose? Who is it benefiting?

If you're worried that you'll get knocked for bugginess, I think most of us understand that the Pre isn't final product and that there will be some hiccups. If you're worried about it being swiped from the show floor, I can understand, but in situations like the Sprint VIP Lounge where it's a select group of people, in a small room where you've got people stationed at the exit, don't you think it'd be OK for a little solo hands-on time? I mean, I couldn't even reposition the phone by myself today just to get a better angle for a photo.

Hey, I appreciate every opportunity and invitation to view the Pre, but it's just frustrating to have this hot device right in front of you and yet, you really can't do anything with it. It's And every time this happens, I can't help but think of Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers' "Really!?!" skit from "Saturday Night Live" and play out my own little scenario in my head. Really? You won't let me touch the Palm Pre? Really!?! I have to be Jimmy Fallon in order to get a little personal with the Pre? Really?! It's just for my amusement, but it helps lighten the situation.

OK, rant over. Now back to your regular CTIA programming.

all fair questions Bonnie, especially since we "sprint preferred" customers count on professionals like you to decide whether the thing is worth the wait...

It's telling... the Pre must be months from release.

Thats what I think. Palm is obviously scared of something being revealed. My guess is that they arent releasing the product until early Q3.
by bhartman33 April 25, 2009 2:22 PM PDT
We already knew the Pre was months away from release. Despite rumor and innuendo to the contrary, "end of the second quarter" means end of June, which is still months away. Granted, it's only two months, but it's still months.

"and we're not allowed to touch certain functionalities"

Do you think maybe they are just being overly secretive? Like they don't want something revealed to the world just yet...I wish Sprint/Palm would stop screwing around and release it already. It seems like they are trying to Apple-level-hype but it's just pissing people off at this point.

And you wonder why they are losing customers. If something is on the device that no one should see, they shouldn't have it loaded on a demo.

I'm in Kansas City and they've lost all loyalty from their hometown.

I'm from Kansas City, too, and I don't think everyone here is unwilling to support Sprint. Does Sprint do everything how I want? No, but it is far from a lost cause.
by quixel1 April 6, 2009 9:03 AM PDT
HAHA i guess you LIED ...Ya big fat LIAR!!! lol sorry but you did lie and caim to represent all of Kansas City. Didn't Apple not let anyone play with the Iphone before it was released?Wasn't it not released until the end of June? Palm has let you know that it wil be out at the latest by the end of June but also let people know it might get out earier then that.Isn't that a plus?IT is like getting your tax refund, they say 2 to 4 weeks or so but generaly you receive it way before the end of the time period.Would you rather them tell you 4 weeks and stick to that? NO/FAIL

Well since you are still watching Saturday Night Liv which hasn't been funny in YEARS then you do not deserve to Playwith the Pre on your own and maybe just maybe they think there is something wrong with you and do not trust you because of that. I don't know, just saying!!!!

Looks like their strategy is working. They've got you worked up to a fever pitch.

I agree with you... lame! What's the deal? If this phone is so great, let a reviewer hold it and be the judge.

It is not ready. The demos are scripted and they made sure the demo works. However, if you do anything outside their script, you will find.....it is not ready.

More than likely, your inability to handle the phone and access certain features is due to legal issues...They probably have some technology in the phone that they are in the process of licensing from another company and as long as the phone remains in their posession, the"developer" license isn't violated...Once the licensing agreement is finalized, you can probably handle the phone all you want.

Hi Ed! I thought about the legal issues and you're probably right, so thanks for making that point. I have a better time understanding why we're not allowed to handle certain applications, but I was just amused that I had to ask someone to do such a simple thing like reposition the phone 45 degrees. :)

Bravo! Give them hell! This is getting out of hand...

So while Ed may be correct about the technical details of licensing, the overall effect is very off-putting. I have to say, between the reluctance to specify a release date and the reluctance to let even article writers touch the device, I have much more confidence in the phantom 3rd version of the iPhone than I do in the Pre. I am leaning towards the new iPhone now, although I prefer Palm to Apple. If Palm doesn't get their act in order, I think they'll lose a lot of potential customers.

In fact, if I don't get the Palm there's a good chance I'll wait for the Omnia HD instead. Have you seen that screen? It's beautiful! The longer Palm waits, the less chance they have to recover...

I can't believe they won't let a hottie like Bonnie "Cha Cha" have some uhm... personal time with the Pre. I think the ruse was really so the Pre "holder" could have a little close-up time with the hottest hottie on Cnet.

Looks like Sprint has taken lessons from the Iphone and is building hype to build more buyers willing to stand in line and even pay premiums to get their hands on the Pre.

Honestly, I think they are just worried someone will do something to jeopardize their chance at a come back. I mean the reality is that the situation you described can't be 100% secure, and someone pocketing the demo device and vamping with it could still be accomplished (in their minds). I mean I feel your pain Bonnie, I do. I would love a chance to touch and play with the Pre, but hey at least it's not in a laser zapper protected, glass case. Gotta be positive.

Pretty hilarious, Bonnie! Really. Thanks for lightening the mood around the Pre's delay. I'm frustrated with the lack of release date information, just like everyone else. I had been set on getting a Pre, but now I'm thinking about buying something else.

I don't really understand why Palm is being so secretive about the Pre. They won't let an industry media person (like our favorite tech writer Bonnie Cha) even touch the thing. They won't give any information on pricing or a release date. I think it's bad marketing to introduce a product in January, but then not even give a release date 3 months later.

I give Palm and Sprint a C for their efforts on rolling this out the Pre. If they weren't ready to release it, then they should have at least given a date of when it was going to be ready.

Thanks to Bonnie Cha for your steadfast reporting and for not being afraid to call them out on their weird behavior. You have a lot of readers who depend on you getting a good look at products as soon as possible.

It's May or June. What does knowing the single day really do for you? Not much. What does price have to do with it knowing it will be around the range of the iphone's? Not much. And if you factor in all that you will save on Sprint, then price really isn't an issue. We know for sure the iphone will be much more costly due to AT&T.

It really is funny watching people get up in arms about release and pricing. Myself, i'd rather see the apps or the phone in action from independent reviewers or any other trick palm has up their sleeves and hasn't talked about.

I think the device is pretty cool.... Palm must have some sort of drama building, I mean it's our toy and be very careful, oh we better hold on to it so you won't drop it Bonnie..... The fate of Palm lies with this device, remembering the days of the visor..... Weren't those cool devices.... I would like see our CNET hottie get her hands on one..... because you know Jimmy didn't seem that interested, and I would love to see it give the iphone a run for it's money..... And don't even get me started on the Storm
