Of all the Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphones announced this week at CTIA Fall 2009, the HTC HD2 is arguably the sexiest and most powerful of the bunch.

The HD2 boasts a 4.3-inch WVGA (480x800) capacitive touch screen and is powered by Qualcomm's new 1GHz Snapdragon mobile processor, all while measuring just 0.43 inches in thickness. It also offers an HTC Sense user experience, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, a 5-megapixel camera, a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack--the works.

With those kind of impressive specs and sexy looks, can you blame us for being disappointed when it was a no-show at Wednesday night's Mobile Focus event? Well, someone must have heard our nighttime prayers because HTC America's vice president of sales and marketing, Jason Mackenzie, presented us with a surprise this morning: the HTC HD2.

Though it wasn't running final software, we were impressed with the phone's responsiveness, the customizable user interface, and then there's the screen, oh, the beautiful screen. Images and text absolutely pop and you can see so much more at a glance given the extra-large screen. Perhaps the best part? HTC has added multitouch capabilities so, like the iPhone and Palm Pre, you can pinch your fingers to zoom in and out of Web pages, photos, and e-mails.

When can you get your hands on this thing? Well, as SlashGear reported Wednesday, HTC CEO Peter Chou said the company is working on a U.S.-compatible version of the HD2 for release in 2010. HTC America would neither confirm nor deny this, but Mackenzie added that the intent for the device is global distribution. When asked about possible U.S. carriers, Mackenzie didn't get into specifics but did say that the good thing about the HD2 is that it wouldn't be hard to pitch, and we certainly agree.

So while we wait, you can check out some hands-on photos of the HTC HD2 below. We'll add more commentary and first impressions soon, but feel free to get the discussion going on your thoughts of the HD2.

HTC is really dominating the smartphone presence lately huh.. I have a question though. Instead of coming out with many different models, why don't they come out with one that would be a direct competitor to run with the Blackberry Tour/Bold, iPhone, and the new Palm Pre? One model, make it packed with features and let it sell.

It is a very sleek phone, and if it winds up on Verizon's network(doubt it) i would jump on it.

That's Apple's way of doing things ,
Most other companies don't thread that path
Cause you need to change the whole perception
and philosofy of the company in order to
it's basically a different way of doing things
Kinda like how bmw and ferrari have a limited range of models to choose from
compared to a toyota or ford

also, making a different type of phone can appeal to different types of people. The iphone tries to appeal to everyone, and it has been a huge success, however HTC has small phones, large phones, phones with and without keyboards, phones with WinMo or Android. It gives people choices, and I gladly welcome them. They understand that no one phone is suitable for everyone. Can't wait for this phone to come out. Then I will sell my iPhone without a doubt. I don't even care what carrier gets its, as long as its not Verizon.

they make different phones that appeal to different types of people. Apple thinks they can appeal to everyone with one type of phone. I like to have a choice.

also, blackberry is quite different from other smart phones. if a person needs a blackberry for some reasons, they will get one anyway. as for Apple, they also have other products like mac computers, ipod, and other products (same for Palm?). whereas, HTC relies primary on the sales of their phones.

I might consider leaving my SERO plan for this.

I think this is the first time I've seen a phone that isn't missing anything I want, hardware-wise... oh wait, a d-pad. Dammit. Definitely couldn't use my OG Touch without it, but maybe winmo 6.5 with that big ass capacitive screen will be do-able.

I do have tiny hands. :) As far as size, the phone is pretty wide but incredibly thin, especially considering everything that's packed into it.

Cool, a WinMo device with a capacitive touch screen, must be real good. But the device itself looks rather huge. The new WinMo 6.5 devices should all come with capacitive screens in my opinion :S

This thing has WANT written all over it. That is arguably one of the best looking phones I have seen in awhile. And with HTC's impressive UI overlays, this thing must be great. Wish I could get a hold of one.

finally a phone with a large screen, thin case, a loaded with features. nver liked the iphone due to lack of carrier options, htc has been really good at spreading their lineup with different carriers. hope they offer it with t-mobile. Review didnt mention gps capability, will it have it?

so this phone is about as carbon-copy as a phone (right down to the 1 ghz snapdragon) can get from the Toshiba TG01...i'm no cell phone expert, but i think it was introduced in Barcelona earlier this year and is available in Europe but not here, last time i priced an unlocked version from Poland it was about $659...is that going to be released here too about the same time as this HTC model?

I have a question, is that Touchflo 3D technology main menu screen thingy only exclusive to HTC phones?? Meaning if Samsung were to release a touch screen winmo 6.5 it will not have this it'll just have the default Zune-look standby screen I've seen in other 6.5 phones?

Yes TOUCHFLO 3D is exclusive to HTC and it is this magic like UI(user interface) that has make the use of WinMO user friendly and interesting. Before this technology, previous WinMO were not user friendly especially when you had dig out some of feacture that were hidden so to speak under layers and layers of apps.

Regarding this phone coming to Verizon: there are two videos on Engadget's web page for this phone and the second one shows "Verizon Wireless Accessories" in the contacts list at about 50 seconds into the video. So hopefully it is coming to Verizon. If so, I will hold on to my Samsung Omnia and wait patiently for the first quarter of 2010.

Nice phone... the only thing missing is a second camera for video calling. I wonder if the quality of the pictures is anything comparable to the Nokia N-series devices? Bonnie do you know how they compare? By the way Bonnie, I love the way you deliver your reviews even though I don't agree with all of them :)

I'm tired of the iPhone and hoping to jump soon...really hope they can make this happen earlier in 2010, or else I'm going to have to jump for the Hero, which doesn't have the same specs.

This phone is gorgeous and functional. Please let it come to the US soon.

The rumors so far indicate T-Mobile will get this phone first. If true, an unbelievable move on HTC's part, just unbelievable. Give this phone to Verizon or to every carrier. What carrier would NOT what this phone? This is my next phone. I can wait. I own a iphone now so its not like I have real crap while I wait.

Please? sooner than later?

HTC should do a special version of the HTC HD2 and make it looks like the "pad" seen in StarTrek. Maybe then all the trekkies or trekkers will be all over this, and boldly go where no man has gone before... live long and prosper... :-p

This phone is the close to perfect -all around best suitable phone, its so diverse, 1ghz Snapdragon processor, capacitive touch screen, for people with big fingertips super wide screen, but not bulky, very thin and sexy, 3.5 headphone jack, totally customizable, for the youtube junkies everything automatically view in HD, computer are now going touchscreen, and thats what this is pretty much, a touchscreen windows mobile device in the palm of your hands with no ceilings(no limits). The reason why i say close to perfect because to me there is some things missing that i can point out, like no camcorder mode, and me! ;-) JGadget
