Hands-on with the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1

Sony Ericsson may have been a sleeper at CTIA, but one good thing came out of it: I finally got my hands on the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. Unlike at GSMA where you had the battle the crowd and public relations folks just to get a picture of the darn thing, I was able to spend a few minutes with the highly anticipated smartphone and all I've got to say is "me-ROW."

It's pretty easy to see why there's so much buzz about Sony Ericsson's first Windows Mobile device. The hardware is elegant and strong, and it is more compact and sleeker than I originally thought. When you slide open the phone, the curved shape really helps to make for a comfortable typing experience. The full QWERTY keyboard was also pretty spacious. My only gripe would be that the navigation keys on the exterior of the phone felt a bit stiff.

Of course, a lot of the phone navigation will be handled via the touch screen. Sony Ericsson's represenatives stressed that the software on the demo unit wasn't final (which thank God for that because it certainly was buggy), but we did get a glimpse of the XPERIA's panel interface. It's cool; it's flashy; and it's pretty easy to use. The company also confirmed at the show that the XPERIA X1 will ship with Windows Mobile 6.1 when it becomes available during the second half of the year.

Check out the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 in action for yourself in the video. Let us know what you think about the phone in the comments.

I really wish we could get a clue as to when the Xperia X1 is going to be released. I continue to hold off on purchasing anything because I lust after this one so badly. I do not know how much longer I can wait before the horses leave the barn!

Couple things: price point & wireless carrier. I feel this thing is going to be at least $400 dollars with a two-year contract exclusive to AT&T. As excited people, including myself, a Sprint customer, are about this phone, at that price I can guarantee you not as many people will actually buy one.

When they say "second half of 2008", they mean Christmas. If they were talking July 1st - there is no way the demo models would be slow and "buggy" as this reporter and others have shared. THIS IS MY DREAM PHONE and I too need to do something BEFORE it comes out. I'll either go from my Treo 650 to 680 to avoid changing software - or make the jump to some other Windows based PDA and dump it the minute this comes out. (Suggestions anyone?)

For me, the only concern I have is the speed and OS. All the demo's I've seen are HORRIBLY slow and I'm a little shocked they would even show these, but to ship a few hundred thousand of these - they are easily 6 months away from launch. Likely to emulate the release pattern of the first iPhone right before Christmas. I wonder who I can bribe to get one of the first!!!!

I really do with this thing was coming out in the summer. I recently "misplaced" my Sony Ericsson k800i, and I need a replacement. (My "plain Jane" Nokia loaner isn't cutting it.) My problem is that I've narrowed my options down to two phones that haven't even been released yet--the 3G iPhone and Sony Ericsson's X1. I'm trying to decided if photo quality (Sony's 3.2 vs apple's 2 mega pixel camera) or the capability to play my music (I'm addicted to iTunes music purchases, so Apple has the edge there) is a bigger draw. Then again, it might just come down which phone comes out first.
