Headphones with good warranties--Ask the Editors

Posted by Jasmine France

As I'm always quick to point out, I'm not the most delicate user when it comes to my own gadgets. I'm clumsy and slightly reckless at times, which also goes toward explaining my tendency to bruise at the shins, hips, and wrists (or anyplace at coffee table, counter, or door knob level). It's always reassuring to be reminded that I am not the only one with such issues. This week's questioner, for example, can't seem to make his earbuds last out the year. You are not alone.

Q: I go through headphones like crazy! The cord always breaks or the wiring comes apart. Currently, I am using Creative earbuds that came with my Zen MP3 player, and they have lasted about eight months, but now the cord is coming out of the connector. Do you have any suggestions on what would be a good pair? I am always on the go, normally wrap the headphones up loosely, and then put them in my case for my player. I need them to have good audio quality and last at the very least a year, but be no more than $50 to $75. Any help would be greatly appreciated.--J., via e-mail

A: Based on your experience, I recommend that you look for a pair of earphones that comes with a good warranty. Shure is always a great company to look at for this--the earphones include a two-year warranty and the company has an excellent reputation for sending replacement products--but the cheapest headphones available, the SE110, are a little above your price range at $100. (You might decide that's worth it, though!) Koss, which makes quite a few cheaper choices, also has a good reputation for replacing products and offers a limited lifetime warranty on its headphones. The KEB79 has good sound quality and can be found for about $70 online.

Of course, there are other manufacturers that provide good warranties as well. This information is often best gleaned from user reviews and forums, as the headphone owners are familiar with long-term use scenarios. As always, I invite readers to comment below with their own experiences--good or bad!

Personally i like skullcandy for their products are inexpensive and sound great the titan earbuds are great the have wonderful noise isolation and for 50$ you get great sound good bass with an overall great mixture of sounds and their warranty is good also if anytime in the lifetime of the product fails do to manufacturing defects they will replace them for free just have to send them to them if you say accidentally cut the cord or blow them from loud music they will replace it for half off retail and they come with a carrying case that protects them quite well i love mine just have to be careful with the volume can blow my eardrums if i have it too loud

I go through headphones quite quickly, as well. The problem is the cord. I realized that when I wrap the cord around my device, it's best to take the 3.5mm end out of the jack; it prevents cord breakage

Choosing a headphone set can be difficult...the style...the fit...the correct sound (to someone's preference of course). Since I don't headphones a lot, I do recall some pretty good ones at Radio Shack...I recall I bought a pair and bought the warranty...Don't know the current policy but back then the warranty covered everything...so ended getting a new pair a couple of times.

Sennheiser has at least a two year warranty on all of their headphones. They tend to also be very durable on top of having some of the best sound for the money and in case you break anything after the warranty ends sennheiser sells replacement parts so you dont have to be buy whole new headphones. For regular headphones the Sennheiser eH350 can be found for as low as 50 bucks with shipping/taxes online. They also make a very large variety of earbuds and other kinds of phones, you should check out their site. The actual street prices tends to be less than half the listed MSRP they have.

Another good alternative is to purchase the headphones with a credit card that offers extended warrantees on items when purchased with the card. I know that Citi bank and Amex both do this for their platinum and gold users. I would try this route before purchasing $100+ headphones.

The Apple In ear buds are great, they have pretty good sound quality and block out a lot of noise. Also, if they ever break (I had a pair for 2 years, I tossed them around in my backpack and training bag and they never broke) you just take them to an apple store in the original packaging, and they'll give you new pair on the spot. So you don't have to wait for the company to ship you any.

I don't understand how does a warranty for "manufacturing defects" handle rough usage/carelessness on the part of the end user.
To play the devil's advocate, if companies started replacing headphones with dislodged connectors.earbuds, they would go bankrupt!!!
Surprised no one ever mentioned wireless headphones here..
Thanks...Dexter_Greycells
