Know your audio formats

I know our MP3 Insider audience could probably spot the difference between FLAC and MP3 just by using their finely-tuned ears, but for mere mortals, making sense of audio formats isn't easy. There was a time when all you had to worry about was music coming on CD, cassette, or vinyl, and telling them apart was obvious. Telling the difference between MP3, WMA, and WAV files isn't quite as clear and determining each format's advantages and limitations takes some homework, too.

If you or someone you know could use a little Audio Formats 101, I've made and overview video and slideshow that covers most of the basic formats that people encounter on their computers. I don't go so far as to say which formats work best (that's a judgment call everyone needs to make for themselves), but you'll get a sense of which formats work on the iPod, and some clues for how those WMA files got in your music collection.

Donald Bell is CNET Reviews' senior editor for MP3 players and portable audio, and one half of the MP3 Insider blog and weekly podcast. He also likes getting his hands dirty with digital audio tools for musicians and DJs.

Get rid of the Ipod and you'll get rid of all your problems.
Why be shackled to proprietary music and players?
Go strictly with MP3 DRM-free downloads. You'll never have to convert anything.
Get a Samsung P3 for the best sound reproduction available in a personal MP3 player. There are several other excellent personal players that play MP3 and other non-proprietary format non-DRM music.
You might like Amazon for a source of MP3 music. Works great, every time. Great customer service. Huge selection.

Donald,

Great manicure and good grooming. You would serve as a fine model for some of the other CNET reviewers. Brian Tong, are you listening. Oh well, Brian, you are cute and give a good presentation as do most of your colleagues. Donald, your presentation was very informative. Thanks.

Good article, I've always found it confusing exactly what formats to use and what to convert to. I have a wireless home theatre setup at home and can really tell the difference with some formats vs others.

Anybody know where the World of Warcraft European servers are located? Someone said they are all in Britain but I am not sure. Would they have some in Germany, some in Finland etc?

I am trying to do a business plan for my own massive multiplayer game and was wonder how they spread out the resources.
