Update 3:47 p.m. PDT: CNET News' Ina Fried captured a video hands-on with the Zune HD that actually stays in focus. You can watch her video here.

High-fives to guys at Gizmodo for hunting down a preproduction model of Microsoft's mythical Zune HD. The video below is a bit on the blurry side, but there's also some sharp and exhaustive photos available from both Gizmodo and Engadget.

From the looks of things, Microsoft has really outdone itself on the hardware design. The Zune's OLED touch screen looks beautiful, and the industrial design of the casing is impressive. What a shame we have to wait until fall to see this on store shelves.

I agree...that was not very informative! I feel that Microsoft missed opportunity to create device that would be something like Swiss knife! They could have added 5 mp camera with video recording, put a better resolution screen because I don't see myself connecting Zune to the HD TV, add microphone so users can install Skype and make calls with it! Make a book reader as a standard part of the OS. This is all great but except HD radio, it is mostly yesterdays technology! Samsung phones are already lighting years ahead of this....so why I would spend $ 200.00+ for it???
This should have been given to us a year ago! Good but NOT good enough to get my money!!!

@Dalmatian28

I also wish for a camera, however a web browser would be nice too. I really want to see this crush the iPod touch...

@ Firehazel

Microsoft confirmed that the Zune HD is going to feature a web browser.

That video is outrageous. The guys at Gizmodo don't know how to focus a camcorder? That sure was a nice looking carpet.

Wow, that's really speedy and snappy! I will definitely be getting one of these if they're priced below the iPod Touch, maybe even at current iPod Touch prices I'd buy it.

Also, I would love to see Microsoft integrate this software in it's Windows Mobile software, maybe as a multimedia section. Forget Windows Media Player, just add this Zune software as an application... just a thought.

All in all... I like what I see. Can't wait for it to be released.

If this thing has an OLED screen, what is the likelyhood of the iPhone having one?

I like this. I know they are planning on using flash based memory but I hope that they exceed the current Ipod Touch sizes. With HD video more GB = a better device. I'm interested in seeing how they are going to integrate the Xbox live experience in a handheld environment. The Achilles heel of the current Zune is the lack of both video & even some audio content in comparison to the chief rival Itunes. Hopefully integrating the Zune with Xbox Live will resolve some of its issues with lack of content. I own both a 30gb Ipod Classic and a 120GB Zune and my Zune is the better of the two devices. The Ipod doesn't even come close!

Nothing here is any different than iPod Touch/iPhone. 0 points for innovation. Microsoft's focus should be on making sure 7 doesn't turn out like vista, not trying (and inevitably failing) to beat Apple with this iPod Touch wannabe. I mean come on, who the heck is going to build fun and engaging (paid) apps for this thing when they can dev for iPod Touch/iPhone for free and hit a HUGE user base. Microsoft, stick to your guns and make good (working) OS's and stop trying to compete with Apple/Google.
by SurrealNetworks June 21, 2009 9:02 PM PDT
Yes, they are so unoriginal... I mean the OLED screen, 16:9 aspect ratio and an HD radio tuner - gosh, its a shame they copied Apple. Oh wait, they didn't; they created a cutting edge music player that will more than likely thrash Apples "incrementally upgraded POS". Get over yourself, this device is evolutionary and is a breath of fresh air for the media player scene.

You must be an Apple apologist/loyalist... freakin' D-Bag.

well the problem is 64gb flash memory isn't quite there yet, once you get past 32gb the price of flash shoots up. and with the power saving oled screen and tegra chipset i wouldn't be surprised to see 40+ hours of music battery life. The zune 120 claimed 25 hours of music life, but we'll see.

So if one gets an iPod Touch, you pretty much get everything else the iPhone has, but no cellular connection.

With the Zune HD you get just bits & parts of WinMo and some kind of app store, but not one that will step on WinMo app store itself? To view HD videos you need to buy the special HD dock connector, which is expensive and lug it around to plug to your friends house on the go. Hmmm ok.

umm when did they price out the hdmi dock? i'm interested if you know the actual price. and what makes you say it will be bulky? have you seen pictures of it?
by forever4now May 29, 2009 2:30 AM PDT
Microsoft has done some nice things with the Zune HD, but I don't see where it fits. I think Apple has created the correct product mix:

1. iPod Shuffle - music player (compact & inexpensive)
2. iPod Touch - music player + app store + WiFi (no cellular contract)
3. iPhone - music player + app store + WiFi/2G/3G (cellular contract)

Microsoft really needs a WinMo + Zune device, to even begin to compete with the iPod Touch & iPhone, but that is not likely to arrive until next year with Windows Mobile 7 (assuming they go that route).

I want to thank you for concisely and clearly explaining all the differences between products in the i-world. I do not own any i-product nor will I ever own any: reason being...I refuse to pay $1.00 (.99 cents) for each and every song that I want to listen to and the reviews on the iPhone are shakey, at best. I only own a Zune, thanks to a wonderful friend that bought me one in '06 and it came with a free Zune Pass. THAT is what has me sold on Zune; I currently have 3772 songs downloaded, which translates into $3,772 i-dollars!!!! Forget apps, Wi-Fi, and touch screens...it's the per cost price of music that made me a fangirl of Zune. All the rest of it is gravy. I've received three incredible years of service from my Zune so I'll wait to see how fragile the new HD Zune is before I trade mine in.

What do we have here, another effort by microsoft to be heard.
They have been knocking on the door with windows vista 64 bit ( i know i know, it sucked, but it was the 32 version which they should have not released) then got in with windows 7 (at least from the RC [release candidate] i have some very good reviews about it so far) and now they got some search engine (bing) which also has some good reviews and its headed for google and now this zune hd.
It seems like microsoft finally got some good engineers to work on their programs so they could stop being the joke of the bunch. I guess apple has much to do with this, bullying microsoft to the point where its a common believe now that vista was a beta of windows 7. I personally give them thumbs up for igniting competition (which is always good) but i hope its not some cheap shot like the 360. I just really hope that the live compativility thing is the only common thing these two devices have (zune()xbox). I will probably not buy this since i have an iphone and probably will get the iphone again when it comes out most likely addressing mayor issues that have not annoyed me at all (pnwed since day one) but at least more capacity and oled screens. I dont have any faith in microsoft but i hope they prove me wrong. Its about time someone gives apple; a bite.

I'd like to point out a couple of things nobody has mentioned.

#1 Why didn't we see the internet browser with this test model?
#2 Why would anybody with an iPod Touch want a device with no app store?
#3 The OLED screen is not new and will be included on BOTH the new Sony Walkman & the next iPod Touch.
#4 There was no mention of price point or storage capacity. Sony and Apple have both let the public know what they will be getting and at what price.

I was shocked to see so many people say "i'm buying tthis on day 1" without so much key information. I am not loyal to any company and base my purchases on who makes the best products based on user reviews not magazines or websites. It is also best to "try before you buy" when it comes to electronics.

P.S. Why is HD Radio even a key feature when the purpose of a portable MP3 player is to carry around your own music?

These are all very valid points and I mirror your consumer attitude: do research and make the wisest decision for yourself. Answering your question about the HD Radio or any radio on an MP3 player for that matter: I listen to my Zune radio at least 30% of each day. I carry the Zune to work and at lunchtime I listen to my local stations for updates on news and weather. Also, on Saturday's when I work, I listen exclusively to the NPR shows, which are great company when I'm feeling sorry for myself about having to work on the weekend. I love my tunes and spend 8+ hours a day listening to them but I also enjoy up to the minute news and weather information so the radio is a key feature for my life style. When my DH and I go camping or hiking, I always have my Zune around, just so we can stay tuned in for severe weather changes. It's also nice to listen to independent music stations to catch less mainstream tunes that you can then find and download from Zune. Perhaps others don't use it but I love the radio feature.

I would like to say that Apple hasn't said if the next iPod Touch would have an OLED screen. But, they did say that the next iPhone would have one, nearly a month after Microsoft had announced it for the Zune HD.

I used to have a Zune, but I dumped it for an iPod Touch.
This looks pretty nice, but the Zune software is beyond agonizing. It can't even be used on macs. (I don't have a mac, so I'm being completely objective).

Too many people already have iPod Touches to turn to this. In fact, I can't remember the last time I saw a regular iPod Classic.

The Touch is more practical than the Zune in terms of everything, from compatability to software to billions of apps to iTunes. Trust me when I say the Zune software is horrible.

The only up the Zune has here is a radio and the screen resolution. Now that I think about it, when I had my Zune, I used the radio sparingly. And when I did, most likely it was because the lacking Zune Store did not have the latest releases, much less anything else in their Music Store.

Once this comes out, apple will have already finished the drawing board for a new OLED screen iPod Touch. possibly.

I am going to have to disagree with you on this. I have never had problems with the Zune Marketplace and find it much easier to use then iTunes. I also have found that the Zune Marketplace has every song i own in its database, even thou I bought none of them from it. I believe that you need to try a Zune again, you'll be surprised by how much it surpasses any iPod.
