Video download comes to iPhone and Touch

Our suspicions that Apple would soon be offering iPhone and iPod Touch users direct downloads of iTunes video content were confirmed during announcements at WWDC 2009.

The mobile version of the iTunes store will soon offer video download and rental options, in addition to the music and podcast options already available. Currently, users are required to purchase and download iTunes video content using a home computer, where it can be transferred to the iPhone or Touch over USB. After the launch of iPhone OS 3.0 on June 17, this content will be available for download directly to the device.

There's no word yet on whether Apple will price mobile video content higher than computer-based downloads, or if selection will differ. Currently, movies purchased through iTunes run between $10-$15, with rentals priced at $2-$5. We expect that mobile video content will be optimized for playback on the iPhone, allowing for faster downloads by shedding unnecessary video resolution.

Also included in the announcement is the capability to directly download audiobook, iTunes U, and music video content. Password-locked parental controls are available to restrict available iTunes content to G-rated or non-explicit material.

It will be interesting to see if iPhone users shun the feature in an effort to preserve precious space and battery life, opting instead to stream content. iPod Touch users, on the other hand, will probably have a field day with their newfound ability to rent movies and download TV episodes on-the-go.

Competitively, the ability to download and rent video content is just one more feature that mobile phone and portable media player manufacturers will need to play catch-up on. As the iPod's strongest competitor, Microsoft has yet to roll out direct video download and rental options for its Zune player, although, the company did tease its revamped Zune Video Marketplace at last week's E3 conference. With the Zune HD due out in September, there's a good chance Microsoft will strike back with a mobile video service similar to Apple's.

iPhone OS 3.0 will be available June 17 as a free update to iPhone users and a $9.95 upgrade for the iPod Touch.

Ha! I love how apple is charging i touch (don't mean iphone) users to pay for an upgrade when zune wouldn't charge a thing. Zune Hd is looking better. Also I'm guessing apple doesn't have a OLED for there device.

I have to right to speak out my opinion. You have to admit it's pretty bad that their charging people to upgrade, oh well guess it's better then no frimware update at all.

No mention of whether there will be an iPod Touch hardware update to match this iPhone 3G S? iPod Touch S?

True, but wait they will offer it free after the cry babies whine. But really why should apple charge their current users for this upgrade? And Apple geeks cry about Microsoft? Please. Offer it free period

Well, all us iTouch owners do not get a "Get Out of Jail Free Card" (see Monopoly) like the iPhone owners....all puns intended. Not that iPhone owners haven't also been screwed by Apple. Actually, this is just another example that demonstrates Apple's phony line that they care more about their customers in their phony Apple vs. PC commercials. Excuse me! I already had to pay for the bluetooth hardware in my iTouch that I could not use with OS 2.0. I'm guessing that even greedy Microsoft would only charge $4.99 for the privilege of using paid-for hardware - even in another company?s product. Apple care about their customers? I think I just threw up a little in my mouth!!!

This "rant" about charging iPod Touch users I feel has gotten out of hand. It baffles me how the most vocal people are clearly the less informed. The sole reason Apple charges iPod Touch and not iPhone has nothing to do with making more money, it's the business model/plan/budget they introduce. These royalties and ability to claim new 3rd party features require you to claim a future "model" to pay for them to be installed and since the iPhone is a continuing payment model it can be added in. The iPod Touch however is a single one sided transaction so to claim royalties to be used they must put a value to said update. As any basic level business class will allow you to understand. And as far as the Zune being of HD resolution soon, that won't be a blow to the current iPhone as we have come to find out via Nintendo game console wars resolution doesn't win over usability. The Wii has out sold the PS3 and Xbox 360 ( which are far more advanced graphics side.). We see this throughout time, remember the MP3 boom that all but replaced the CD? Consumers have always traded quality in product for convience.

yeah except your arguement is flawed when looking at the zune. the zune had a massive update in october that added awesome new features to all zunes fo' FREE. And apple certainly has extra money lying around in comparison to microsoft. and your arguement is also retarded about the wii because the wii didn't win anyone over with convenience, it won people over because you didn't have to ask how to use it. You just waved the remote. Which has nothing to do with a zune or ipod. If you had the graphics of the ps3 and the ease of use of the wii, it would sell like dynamite. So if microsoft makes a product thats easy to use and has really nice looking content, how could they not win? And if its cheaper than a touch, i'm all in. Lets be honest, the touch is expensive already.

The Wii comparison was not "retarded" at all. The iPod Touch can do so many advanced things and yet is one of the easiest products to use by far just like the Wii. HD on such a small device is needless anyways. I would;nt want to pay the premium to add it to the iPod 3. Not worth it. Hopefully iTunes will be subscription based soon though, Zune's only advantage.
