An overview of iPod updates in OS 3.0

As an iPod Touch owner, iPhone OS 3.0 enhancements such as MMS, and copy/paste aren't as relevant to me as the subtle improvements Apple has made to media playback and search.

New features such as music search (distinct from Spotlight), fine track scrubbing control, podcast e-mailing, and an expanded iTunes storefront, won't grab many headlines but they're certainly welcome additions to an already excellent product.

To make my point, I've put together a slideshow and video of some of the less-appreciated improvements iPhone OS 3.0 has given to media junkies like myself.

The following products mentioned are available.

On Sale Now: $229.99 - $296.17

What a disappointment. Cut and paste across apps - bologna! You cannot cut and paste from the browser (Safari) which in my opinion is the single biggest use for cut and paste on a smartphone (cut and paste an address, article, definition, a link, etc., etc.). Once again, Apple gets great credit from folks and the media for doing something half a$$ that other smartphones were doing many years ago (Treo, etc.). Also, why can't I go to landscape mode for the keyboard across all apps?? This is dumb too. For example, when typing in a password, or doing a Google search, I cannot go to landscape mode. Why not? Is it really that hard, Apple, to make this so? Or maybe you just want to have something for 3.1 six months from now - you know, spread the news across time? That way, you can have the headline "iPhone 3.1 now allows cut and paste from Safari." And the folks shall rejoice again. And then a year from now, "iPhone 3.2 adds landscape keyboard mode to enter passwords." And again, the easy-to-please Apple fans sing "rejoice, rejoice!!!" Seriously. What a crock...

I agree. Anybody can throw gps, or wifi on a phone, it is the little things that make a phone great and the reason (combined with att's HORRIBLE data network) why the iphone falls short of expectations. I expect more from a company that can turn an ordinary trackpad on a laptop into a cool multifunction control pad.
by zhakidd532 June 18, 2009 11:33 AM PDT
Actally, you CAN cut and past from Safari and landscape DOES work in all apps. If you stopped pissing and moaning for just a second you might actually be able to do it...
by mouseclick June 18, 2009 11:40 AM PDT
zhakidd532: Don't tell me what I can and cannot do on my iPhone. If you stop being such an Apple-fan-at-any-expense, you might have considered... I've cut and paste from my notes, email, etc. dozens of times already. But despite trying to do so dozens of times in Safari, I cannot. It's probably a glitch in my phone and in fact Apple care has already told me I need to do a total restore. Second, landscape DOES NOT work in all apps. Go to Safari, tap on the top right to do a search with your default search engine. When the keyboard comes up, try to go to wide mode. NOT!!! And that is just one instance of many - go to your calendar to add an event in wide mode... NOT. Get a grip, genius...

I have been able to copy and paste from safari. dude, calm down
by zo6freak June 18, 2009 12:50 PM PDT
mouseclick: If you can get your fat fingers to stay in one place on some text in Safari, it may just work for you. I really dont know what the big flippin deal is with switching the keyboard from portrait to landscape while typing. Maybe you could take 2 seconds out of your busy multi-tasking life and click out of the text box and turn your phone on its side then repeat. You "techies" always find something to complain about. Either way, congrats on coming up with a clever rant to boost your self esteem on cnet.

Mouseclick. The mental ward is calling, they need you back stat! Dude, you can copy and paste out of Safari, like any other app. You look like a fool!
by darcal2000 June 18, 2009 2:27 PM PDT
Dude, you can copy and paste from Safari. I've done it a few times already. You're obviously not doing something right or you need to reload the OS.
by hawleyrw June 18, 2009 6:45 PM PDT
I don't know WHAT you're talking about - with the new 3.0 release, I can cut and paste between apps, INCLUDING Safari.

Try it again..... :-/
by bobbyfly16 June 19, 2009 5:36 AM PDT
What are you talking about?! I can't get enough of copy and paste. Every app I click on, and I mean every app, I can't click on something or drop without that feature popping up.
by iTuner99 June 19, 2009 10:15 AM PDT
Safari landscape mode keyboard works, dude. Simply start off in landscape mode when you open Safari and click the search field and all is right with the world of iPhone. Also, cut and paste in Safari is awesome.
by robert.loney June 18, 2009 11:38 AM PDT
Actually mouseclick is wrong.

You can cut, copy and paste in the URL field in Safari in OS 3.0. And you can also copy and paste from the content of a web page (not possible to cut content in a browser).

And there is no problem using landscape to enter passwords and or perform Google searches with OS 3.0.

The information you were provided was either wrong, or you may not understand how to use these features. They actually work quite well.

I agree with your response. Hopefully, mouseclick will appreciate the cool logic of your response.

The catch is that in Safari, you have to turn the screen landscape BEFORE you bring up the keyboard. The keyboard doesn't swing around like it does in notes and mail. That's kinda lame.

I can copy and paste in safari, no landscape when typing a search in google though

You can't go from portrait to landscape while you have the keyboard up. But if you're viewing Safari in landscape and hit the google searchbar it'll come up in landscape. It's an odd quirk.
by bdoyle87 June 18, 2009 11:47 AM PDT
Correction, landscape when using google etc.. but you have to already be in landscape, once the keyboard comes up you cant change the orientation

The iPhone is so far behind in many ways... I mean... Just speaking as an outsider looking in, How the hell has everyone lived this long without copy/paste? I have been able to do this on my phone for years. and MMS?????? please... i think my nokia could do that like 6 years ago.

Now i know that the iPhone is a great device, and that fanboys are going to hate on me for posting this, but come on.... these are standard features that most every phone has had standard for years and years. I cannot figure out why all my friends are so excited about this update...

Here is something to keep in mind. It's not just about throwing in a bunch of features into a phone. It's about implementing it in a way that is a pleasure to use. I used to think like a lot of folks here, that it was all about the features. Hence why I ended up with an ATT Tilt instead of the iphone 3G. I later bought an itouch. I quickly realized that the user interface and overall design of the itouch (and I would guess the iphone) was years ahead of the Tilt.

Apple has done an excellent job with implementing cut/paste in a pure touch screen panel. Like I said before, even their stereo bluetooth implementation is excellent now that they have it. With my Tilt it was practically useless, even if it had it. It would cut in and out. My Sony Ericsson W880i was better, but my itouch now with OS 3 is rock solid. All used my same Sony Ericsson HBH 980 stereo bluetooth headset. This is just one example of where not all features are the same. Just because the ATT Tilt has the same feature I would not say it is equivalent to iphone OS 3. Even my 3.2 MP camera on my Tilt was much worse than the iphone 2MP camera. Of course I was stuck with the Tilt. Once my contract is up for renewal I will get the 3G S.

Sorry Jaffrey apple cant take credit for your Bluetooth so fast. my t-mobile Dash was far more consistent using stereo bluetooth to my headset than my Iphone is.

Ok seriously people this is an iPod article, not an iphone piece, so um yeah..

Google search bar in safari does work in iPhone OS 3.0. Launch safari, tilt your iPhone/iPod, THEN tap the google search field. then a wide keyboard shows up.

i have to say, i don't really think this is worth the $10 upgrade at all. Wow i can download movies from itunes now. Thats about the only worthwhile feature thats included. Cut,copy, paste should have been there from the beginning.
Looks like i'm sticking with my zune where they offer updates FO FREE NINETY NINE

I paid the 9.95 for the bluetooth function, I have a bluetooth stereo in my car so for me it was worth it just for that, hate wires

I am an Ipod user, with the updates that have been revealed in the video. I was kind of disappointed, OS3.0 is designed for Iphone instead of Ipod, so it is pretty normal that not much new features for Ipod, well it is majorly caused by the hardware restriction in Ipod as well. I just hope Apple won't ditch Ipod touch just because they have a successful Iphone.

Very funny, am an ipod touch user. as far as phones are concerned, am a samsung boy I dont care if the iphone can make or bake pizza, samsung is the way to go for me.

Unless Apple adds a camera to the ipod touch, I will be buying the zune hd and flushing my 2g itouch down the toilet.

Where did you get a 2 GB iPod Touch? I was under the impression that 8 GB was the smallest they ever made/
by whycali June 19, 2009 7:12 AM PDT
Pretty much the proof of apples slow leak for $ is the implementation of stereo bluetooth in the touch. Really, before there was no bluetooth and now if you give me ten dollars there is? How soon till apples cutting edge stereo bluetooth headset hits the apple store?

Have been trying to find out if the new 3.0 for the touch has a customised equilizer ? i.e. not the 'presets" but the ablitlity to adjust the bars in 5 band equilizer individually. And if not, is there any such application in the app store that does this? I have been searching for this for sometime now but no luck so far. Thanks.

There is no doubt that the new i phone 3G and the S are marvelous devices. But as a BB business user on Verizon, I simply cannot replace my BB with such an inferior network as AT&T. The real dope hear was the person at Apple that put such a great device on such an inferior network. For youngsters texting I guess it is ok. For serious users---we are shut out.
