Is the original iPod Touch worth upgrading?

Owners of the original Apple iPod Touch are at a disadvantage when it comes to upgrading to iPhone OS 3.0. The OS upgrade comes with a $10 fee and adds improved features such as copy and paste, landscape keyboard, Spotlight searching, Shake-to-shuffle, Safari autofill, and improved Wi-Fi hot-spot log-in. Unfortunately, desirable new features such as Voice Memos and Bluetooth audio streaming won't work on the first-generation hardware.

To add insult to injury, some first-gen users (including CNET's own Antuan Goodwin) are reporting slower system performance after making the upgrade. Symptoms such as choppy gameplay, longer App launches, and sluggish menu scrolling seem to be the most apparent.

Any first-gen Touch owners out there having similar issues with OS 3.0?

Upgrade 2.2.1 killed my wifi chip and I was hoping that 3.0 would solve this issue, but it didn't. I went to the Genius Bar and they said it was not repairable and out of warranty, since it was 18 months old. What a waste of $299

Is this an accurate recollection of what happened? It seems to me that they should be liable for any damage their software causes. Are you sure that is wasn't already broken?

But then again, this is Apple...their primary interest is in NEW cu$tomer$...er..customers.

OMG is that what happened, my wifi just stopped working and I have no warranty either. I didn't know that it was 2.2.1 that killed my wifi too. Without wifi my ipod touch's features are basically cut in half.

Yes, its worth to upgrade the 1st Gen iTouch however after the upgrade I had problems with connecting to youtube. A solution is to resync your ipod with itunes.

The new features are useful to have although I find the cut/past feature obtrusive when trying to scroll on webpages. Is there a way to switch off cut/paste?

otherwise I am happy with OS3.0.

I am an iPod Touch 1G user. I did the upgrade, if only because at some point v.2 wouldn't be supported. But I am noticing that my mpeg4 videos suddenly have a/v sync problems. When I launch them they are out of sync. If I close and relaunch them, then they are okay.

I hope 3.0.1 comes soon with some fixes.

I gave my 1st Gen to my daughter and upgraded her to 3.0. I thought that the voice memo would work seeing that the app that lets you make free internet calls works, this would work. I never tried it seeing I don't have a compatible headset. I am upset that it doesn't work. She has not reported to me that anything is wrong with the touch. She watched a few movies and added a few apps already and said nothing about performance. I also heard iphone users saying that they had wi-fi problems when moving up to 3.0. Hopefully that will be fixed soon too.
I think that the overall benefits of shake to shuffle, landscape in all apps, cut and paste, and the other items listed in Donald Bells video are good enough to upgrade. Plus that is the risk of buying a 1st gen of anything right?

Yeah the 3.0 update slowed down my touch too, its some weak sh*t. Its not worth the upgrade unless you need it for some app coming out...

I have actually had this issue with the OS 3.0 update for the iPhone 3G. The app store opens up very slowly, even on wifi connection. and also the wifi seems slow to recognize a signal... is anyone having these issues also?

Yes. I own a 2nd gen also. It took me over an hour to download and install 3.0. I finally got in touch with an
Apple Product Specialist after my third call to Apple support. He advised me to wipe out the iPod Touch
via Restore. Reinstalling everything took an additional 45 minutes. When it was finally functional, I realized
that all of the data in my Notes app was gone. I was not happy. Also, all of the files that were stored in
File Magnet were also gone. My Wi-Fi signal only had one bar and for some reason I'm not able to upgrade to
the 3.0 version of certain apps, unless I want to pay for them..... again.
I wish I would have never upgraded.

@RCrazy001: Yes, I am having the same issues with my iPhone 3G. The OS is slower and tends to lag more than it did prior to 3.0, the App Store is sluggish (many-a-time, it fails to download a new app, fails to connect to my iTunes account, or fails to deliver an update that requires several more attempts), and my WiFi connection is wonky.

for everyone having problems, try restoring your touches/iphones. a major upgrade like that should just get a clean slate.

This is why Im waiting for iTouch 3rd gen to come out. I've got an 1G i touch and I'm not gonna upgrade til next gen itouch. its not worth the upgrade if i can't use many of the features. itouch users have topay for they're upgrade and if I'm not getting my moneys' worth than why bother. Thanks but, I might just jailbreak it instead. =D.

I agree with RDC12

I have the 1st generation iPod Touch and have no plans on upgrading the software.

I figured out Apple's scheme. You buy it once, pay for it as frequently as they snap their fingers.

Well, they can keep on snapping their fingers and I will continue to ignore them.

I paid for it, I own it, I am not paying again.

I have not upgraded my 1st gen iPod Touch and do not plan on doing so.

I will use it until it dies, then I may chose a different iPod completely. Perhaps the Nano. I don't care for games or apps. Just a simple music and video player with a calendar fits my needs, thank you!

I think I have the 2nd gen Ipod Touch. In any case, the new features in the 3.0 OS' don't impress me enough to shell out $10. Had it come with Flash then I would have considered upgrading my Ipod Touch. Until then, I'll stay with the my current OS until the batter dies on this thing and I have to get a new mp3 player.

check on the left side of your iPod-Touch (the left edge); specifically, the upper-left part.

if you have volume buttons, you have the 2nd generation. if you DON'T have volume buttons, you have the 1st generation.

i haven't updated mine yet, and so far, it seems like i can't. I live in Panama (i'm a U.S. citizen, from when the U.S. Military was here), but iPod-Touches here cost $450.00 AND UP. stupid, isn't it???

OS 3.0 has caused my wifi connection to slow down and the range has decreased also. I used to get all bars at home and now I get just one. Other wifi connections in my neighborhood that used to show up all of a sudden don't anymore. It totally crashed my touch in the MLB At Bat app and won't stream the games it says it would.

Works fine on my iPod (a entry level 1st gen). I got mine as a music player and to watch video podcasts - Apple's updates have turned it into a great PDA, I couldn't be happier.

I think a lot of people have forgotten just how little the iPod Touch did when they bought it, and how much it does now. Would I like a newer one? Sure, Apple wouldn't be doing a very good job if I didn't, but that doesn't mean I'm unhappy with them. Their job is to make stuff I want to buy, Apple do that better than anyone!

Just a big thanks for posting this article. Since there really aren't any new features that I find irresistible, I am not going to take a chance on messing up my 1G with this "update."

I have a 1st generation Touch and I got my upgrade for free. I'm probably not supposed to post the link here, but if you go to YouTube and type in "Apple 3.0 software," there are videos telling you how to get the update for free. I have noticed that the Wi-Fi doesn't latch on as fast at my house and that the App Store takes much longer to open, but I enjoy the new features, especially the search function. Hopefully, the 3.1 software will work out the kinks.

Tim.

I got 3.0 for free too. I know why they do it but I will not pay everytime they release an update. I got the ipod touch when it first came out and they want 10 bucks every time, when new user's get the ipod touch version 2.0 with better hardware and a free software upgrade for less than I paid for the version 1 touch.

I have the 1st gen iPod touch, the 3.0 update is totally worth it to me. One thing I noticed is I used to only get one bar when connected via wi-fi at home but after updating I get both of the blue bars now :)

Unlike others here I haven't had any problems with the update, in fact when using Safari, web sites load faster and even the map runs and loads smoothly.

I just hope Apple comes out with an iPod touch that has a camera, as alot of apps I have also use the camera so having a camera would be nice. I don't need or want a phone be it iPhone or any other phone as my iPod touch with the exception of a camera does all I want it to do.

For those that don't know, if you find a picture you want to save while web surfing all you have to do is press and hold on the picture and a screen pops up with the option to save the image. No need to take a full page screen shot just for a picture now.

I've got a 1G 32GB filled up with music and I upgraded to 3.0 mainly for the spotlight search. I really like the search and if you have a large library you will want this. It didn't seem to break anything, I down loaded an app and it automatically connected to my home network. But I mainly just use it in my car as MP3 player, wired but never worry about charging.
