Creative Zii touch-screen player outed by FCC

A filing with the FCC offers some evidence that Creative has a new touch-screen portable media player in the works. Named after the system-on-a-chip processor Creative showed off during CES 2009, the Zii (and the developer-only Zii EGG) include music and video playback capabilities, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, and an HD camera on the back.

Little else about the player is revealed in the FCC filing, but it's pretty easy to connect the dots and see that Creative is playing catchup with Apple's iPod Touch. Creative is no stranger to playing second fiddle to Apple, but the company has no precedent when it comes to working with developers to create mobile applications (as the developer-edition Zii EGG model suggests).

Some speculate that the Zii will run on Google's Android OS, taking advantage of an established developer community. If so, Android seems to be iPod-killer OS of choice these days, as Sony has also announced plans to use Android in future versions of their Walkman line.

haha it looks like a picture of the back of an ipod touch that they just wrote zii and hd camera on

that said, this does sound pretty promising, especially if it runs android and they modify it like the htc hero

now what matters, when and how much?

Yeah and apple did not copy off LG's Lg Prada when they were at their conference.. no sir.

You're not an ignorant fool either.

Get your facts straight.
by btr1389 July 7, 2009 4:56 PM PDT
@ sahilk

So by saying that Apple copied LG, you are saying that Apple fully designed, tested and produced the iPhone in less than 6 months. That, sahilk is impossible. The LG Prada was announce in January 2007 and the iPhone was announced in June 2007. Also, the iPhone had been in the works for 2 years prior to its announcement. So, who's the ignorant one now?

@ Dan7637

My thought exactly.
by sahilk July 7, 2009 5:16 PM PDT
Lg Prada was shown off in September 2006 not 2007.
by sahilk July 7, 2009 5:19 PM PDT
"released in September 2006 and that the phone concept had been made public some time before that."
by inflammable July 7, 2009 6:18 PM PDT
Sooo yeah... Apple invented portable music players, portable media player, touch screen devices, pmp with wi-fi, now they just invented bluetooth technology, copy and paste, and a bunch of other things.....
So yeah a rectangular shape with round corners is also an apple invention.
by btr1389 July 9, 2009 2:04 PM PDT
@sahilk

The only thing i can find is that the LG Prada was first announced in January 2007. If you can give me the link to where you got 2006 then i will be happy to be proven wrong.

@inflammable

No one here said that apple invented any of those things. It's just that the pictures of the zii and zii egg look almost identical to the back of the original iPhone.
by mogley2005 July 7, 2009 10:56 AM PDT
How are they ripping off the design? Seriously, the "design" is a square box with a touchscreen, on one side, there are not many other ways you can do it. Maybe they should use the triangle, octagon, or even the circle. They wouldn't be ripping off a "design" then. Oh, and the palm pilot circa early 90's had an "iphone" design too.

As bland and boring Apple products are; this one looks interesting. The curvature on the Z - gives it extra something..

i love the subscription service so i'm going with the zune HD.
by forever4now July 7, 2009 2:13 PM PDT
One of the nice things about Android is the "open" app store. This makes it easy for any music service to be offered on Android.
by bleu_tropix July 7, 2009 10:43 PM PDT
@ cbaisa: yea, but this will probably be compatible with Napster-to-Go and Rhapsody...so I'd probably go with this instead if my choice was hinged on subscription music capability.
by dajedikidd July 7, 2009 12:33 PM PDT
Yeah, calling this an IPhone ripoff, is kinda like calling any CRT television made after the original a ripoff. Sure there are significant differences, but they are all generally the same shape. Of course, the fact that this is simply a media player and not a phone, make the comment even that much more ridiculous.

yeah why does everyone have to hate on the competition? i thought we were a nation that liked underdogs and the little guy?
by make_or_break July 7, 2009 1:06 PM PDT
I'm in the camp saying that the form appears to be a ripoff of the Touch. Despite the similar size the images of the upcoming Zune HD doesn't look like the iPod Touch. But based on these preliminary drawings the Zii very much does.

The "Zii" name is even a knockoff of the Nintendo Wii name. Not very creative, Creative.

This is great news! I have a Creative ZEN and I love it, but it's in need of a replacement because it's starting to die. But it was a great reliable player. I was considering one of the new iPod touches rumored to be announced in September, but I'm putting all that on halt. I mean seriously, I can't pass up a touchscreen ZEN, with WiFi, plus that crazy HIGH DEFINITION camera!?!?! I'm officially happy now.

I know what high definition video is, but what is a high definition camera? I think it's just a marketing ploy that clearly worked to get you hooked.
by dmv915 July 8, 2009 4:37 AM PDT
Is that sarcasm in "HIGH DEFINITION" or actual excitement? Well anyways, high definition camera doesn't even reach 1 megapixel, truly disappointing.
by dmv915 July 8, 2009 4:40 AM PDT
Edit: The bare minimum for HD camera doesn't even reach 1 megapixel.
by SuzSM July 24, 2009 6:51 AM PDT
I agree. I, too have a Creative Zen and it's about worn out. I actually got it in Malaysia the week it was issued to the market and so didn't care that I have to use an adapter to recharge it while I am home. I love the sound and picture quality. I have never understood why creative is such a big name everywhere but the US. mm
by ThePrinceOfSteves July 7, 2009 2:42 PM PDT
My Sony Clie NX70V from 2003 has a full to-the-edges touch screen and a camera built in and plays mp3s so that's the real ancestor, if anything,

I have a Creative Zen "V" 4GB, so moving on to the "Zii" is a small step. They have good sound and good control software. Creative also have the DRM chips to allow you to get all-you-want mp3s from one of the companies for a monthly fee, if you like that style of getting music, so it has that to be different from the ipod touch.

How much flash memory in on board and please, have an expansion slot for additional memory. Creative has always done that part right so far. I have added a 32GB card to my 32 GB Zen for a total of 64 GB of flash memory. Also, allow user replacement of the battery. If you want to even be remotely considered an "IPOD Touch killer" start with those two things.

Just cause it's a touchscreen player that's rectangular and has rounded corners doesn't make it a copy of Apple =___=

Has anyone taken a look at the Sony Walkman X series player on CNET's front page today. Play the preview. It looks absolutely like what I imagined the Zune HD to be. Really beautiful, has some cool apps.

I dislike apple for many reasons. The only I-anything I have ever had was an Ipod that was given to me, when I lost my creative nomad jukebox, of which I promptly put Linux on. Why do I want to pay a bunch of money for an apple with a bite taken out of it???? Especially when the people who have done pretty much nothing but sound (creative) are finally getting their stuff together and making good products that keep up with the newer technology of apple and microsuck. Good work Creative, keep it up. And who cares what shape it is. Can I see my videos and do they sound good. Does the menu work. I don't really care about texting from my music player but so be it. Put a true x-fi chip in a player and figure out how to keep battery life long and that's ALL you really need. If I need more than that I'll get a computer or a pocket PC.

By the way the fine guys at apple and microsoft both stole tech back in the eighties. Who created the first GUI with a mouse???. XEROX! [ Sarcasm ]oh wait the fact that you aren't using a zerox computer means your compuer has stolen technology. [/Sarcasm ]
by ventrible July 14, 2009 2:38 AM PDT
come on ppl, no matter you support an apple that has a bite taken off or a creativity that is not creative enough. it all comes down to your CHOICE.

Apple is known for its class design (correct me if i am wrong)
Creative is known for its powerful X-Fi audio standards

u like nice audio standards in your songs then go for CREATIVE.
LIKE CLASSy style, Apple is your choice.

Y always try to argue over such tech when you all know that you can nver get perfect stuff.
Wan perfect stuff? tell Creative and Apple to merge their company!

@justinf79

how can you be so sure is junk? you are jus unlucky to get defective product and you says its JUNK?
no offence but you gt to tink again why it is junk to you.

PS: towards those that sae about the shape designs of both itouch and this Zii,
What can you expect a touch screen device too looked like? Oval in shape? come on ppl even handphones are also this kinda of design~
