The Creative Zii EGG in all its Android-loving glory.

We knew Creative was up to something when that Zii Egg FCC application flew past us earlier this month, but we had no idea it would be this awesome, or this confusing. Turns out the Zii Egg (what an unfortunate name) is a multitouch-wielding, HD video-playing, dual-camera-having (front and back) rival to the iPhone and iPod Touch, running on Google's Android OS (see all the official specs over at Zii.net).

You can grab a 32GB model now for $400, but don't expect it to be fully baked. Creative is announcing this as a "developer edition" in the hopes that the Android community will pick up the platform and run with it. I guess it takes a village to beat an iPhone.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that we may never actually see the Zii Egg released to consumers as an official Creative product. The company is looking to sell rebranded Zii Eggs directly to other manufacturers as an OEM product.

For a company that's been trickling out half-hearted products all year, it seems odd that Creative would make something with such unprecedented appeal, only to lob it to open-source developers and slap someone else's name on it. Then again, maybe it's smart enough to know it has made a product that's potential is beyond Creative's capabilities to execute. If this thing ultimately becomes a phone (all the ingredients are there) Creative is likely just being cautious about entering the mobile phone market as a newcomer.

Holy Android's Batman!
This actually looks really awesome. If I had the money to get internet serves on my phone I would consider getting this phone. But for now I have to stick to my $20 flip phone. Creative is one of my favorite companies and I think they did a really good job with this one.

Its not a phone...Its a media player, like an iTouch. its running android which is a mobile platform but doesn't mean it has to be a phone.
by man_is_man July 28, 2009 12:38 PM PDT
ugh TyDiz, it's called an Ipod Touch.
by TyDiz July 28, 2009 1:36 PM PDT
oops...my bad. I wrote that in like 2 seconds haha...it even says iPod Touch just off to the right of this comment box :S Oh well haha
by istill316 July 28, 2009 8:48 AM PDT
Dude, if this can do 1080p like the promo video suggests, and it can be had for as low at $199, then I'm in regardless of its phone/Internet status! What a great media player!

Someone will have to add a physical keyboard for me to consider it as a phone but it is already one hell of a stand alone media player. And as a zen vision w user must say that I'm very impressed and this is the first time it is a real upgrade available.

i agree a keyboard would be nice but still..overall i would get even with its 400 price tag...

I feel like this will be an exceptional product, but the battery life will keep it from its true potential. It seems to be a recurring theme in Creative products.

gentlemen, this is not a phone.

at best you could voip with it if you happened to be on wifi, but you're not going to be able to get a mobile carrier for it.

and i doubt it does 1080. i'm going to assume 720 until they verify specs. people love to say HD when their product is only doing 720

720 is still HD.
by strange1889 July 28, 2009 10:10 AM PDT
yes it does 1080p and 720... trust cNet to leave out the details. if you want the whole thing go to zii.com now, wikimon stop hating on Creative.

By the very definition of the term, 720 is HD. It is an industry specification, not your silly opinion, that counts.
Also, can you actually discern the difference between 720 and 1080 on a 4 inch display? I didn;t think so.....
by kalel33 July 29, 2009 5:00 PM PDT
720P is HD, and your completely ignorant on video technology if you think otherwise. Also, if you can't see the difference between 720P and 1080P on a 47" HDTV then how can you possibly see the difference on a 4" screen. People will eat up anything.

Have had a SDK and the Egg will be provided "carrier" phone service ....why do u think it is such an open platform? They did not spend $1B and 10K man-years for nothing. They will have lots of apps and are not making the Iphone/At&t or any carrier mistake. The apps wil be much more robust and multitask to put Web OS to shame. It is a extensible and modular architecture mostly requiring only firmware updates at this point. It is a platform U will NEVER throw away or forklift upgrade!! U might add new components, but it is so far ahead, no wonder peole are scratching their heads.. The $199 prices are VOLUME prices for OEMS the way it will be sold and should be sold. It also is a Linux Kernal as well as Android!! It will allow much more extensive apps and have the battery and architecture to pull it off. Even at $400, I get all the firmware upgrades, free 64GB, and decent batter life... BTW I had the very fist "MP3" Player made by Archos with Blue side bunpers and 1/4 brick size...travelled around the world with it.

this is the best way to 'attack' the itouch and is an answer to my prayers. i've been dying to get a capable open source player (w/o hacking) for years. creative has done that and added so much more. wifi, bluetooth, etc. i'm getting one. hands down. the only thing i'm iffy about is the android + "plazsma" OS wth that means. but this is open source so you can wipe the whole thing and build your own from the machine code up if you wanted

Ditto. I'm still on my original creative zen jukebox xtra I bought 6 years ago. Greatest player EVER. I'd LOVE to get my hands on one of these. Creative and open source?!? It's a match made in heaven. I'm not looking forward to coddling a large easily scratched screen, however. I think that'd be the one thing I'd miss. My old zen is tough enough and heavy enough to be used as a boat anchor... Maybe it's time to move on from monochrome displays and hard drives to the newer stuff.

I am sorry but this is the worst video advertisement I have seen for a product of this caliber. I was excited to watch this video until the video was just showing a person playing with this device with no volume. This totally turned me off.

this device isn't being hawked at consumers, but developers and OEMs in a market that has been pretty much non-existent until now. so there isn't as much need for a flashy showcase. the device speaks for itself. developers and OEM's can see the potential in such a device so why cheapen it with "Sham-Wow" style marketing ploys (especially since the website is already riddled with them) and the processor has been showcased all over the place so we know what this device can do.

This device is, in itself, basically a technology demo for the chipset, associated modules and SDK -- and even in that context looks pretty awesome. The article says you can buy the Egg for $400, but on the zii.com website, it's actually marketed as buying the SDK for $400 and getting a free Egg included along with it.

I could definitely see this platform good for hobby-level hackers, small-company development teams wanting to get a product quickly to market (or at least to demonstration phase), and mid-to-large companies whether developing media players or phones. It will be interesting to see what comes of this. And by "this" I mean the platform; this specific unit is cooler than most comparable products even at this stage, but even better will come from it.

I'm not I understand what it is I'm seeing. This is made by Creative? The audio company...

Also didn't he say 380x480 resolution screen, that's not HD.

the output is HD

wow it even has a full sd card slot? i guess unless it has terrible battery life or something then it fully beats the ipod touch on hardware. Creative does a great job with UIs on it's devices so hopefully they'll put a nice skin over android like htc did with the hero (maybe that's the plasma OS)

i love my zune but i still miss my creative sometimes, it'd be great if they came out with something this cool (and keep it at $400 for 32gb) so i could switch back, now i wonder if they'll go all the way and turn this into a phone

Wow.....this is so...out of the blue. Im a huge android fan and have always been curious about Creative. They have always been the underdog. Im very very impressed. Its blown me away. I hope this becomes a phone. Either way im getting it without a doubt. But my only question. It never say the MP of either of the cameras.

i wouldn't say this is out of the blue... the FCC filing came at the beginning of the month and the brains the Zii CPU has been touted by Creative for about a year now. creative might be a little late to the touch screen ring, but I think they stepped up the game with this. this isn't an iphone or ipod touch competitor. this is a full blown computer in your hand. i think this competes more squarely with netbooks than i****

I've been a big fan of Creative for their soundcards- never had a problem with them, and for my Zen Microphoto MP3 Player.

If this comes out I WANT ONE!!!! If I can watch video, listen to music without being tied into software, a music store, or limited to how many computers I can put the music on, I definitely want one!!!

Ok, BIG plus if I can swap out batteries when I WANT TO!! Month long camping trips with an iPhone or iPod dont work if there's no electricity within 100 miles. ;)

this is out... 400 dollars. you can have one.

I'm interested in seeing how the SD card implementation is handled. I used to have a Creative Zen, and I remember that one of my only issues with is was that the SD card wasn't joined with the main memory. That aside, this looks fantastic. I've always had a soft spot for Creative.

*boggle* you guys really think you can see the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 3" screen?

I call bs if you do, I've got sharp eyes (20/15) and 720p vs 1080p is only slightly noticeable (quality being equal) on a giant screen. Any difference at that size would be negligible.

and why exactly do you think that resolution applies to a 3.5 inch screen? hd resolutions in small portable devices like this one refer to the output, which means you can playback videos stored in the player in a full hd television using a proprietary cable a zii link to be exact. in a television you would be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p
