An Amazon product listing may reveal the retail pricing of the 16GB and 32GB Zune HD.

Update: The Zune HD is now officially available for ordering.

Microsoft's secrecy around its upcoming Zune HD portable media player is being betrayed left and right these days. Yesterday, we found images and details on the Zune HD's storage capacity leaked by the FCC, and now we have Amazon showing off retail pricing.

An Amazon product listing prices the 16GB Zune HD at $219, and the 32GB model at $289. Unfortunately, you'll get a 404 error if you try clicking through from the listing to the actual product page, which dashes any hope of preordering.

Compared against similar products, such as the iPod Touch and Sony X-Series Walkman, the pricing shown on Amazon is very attractive. In particular, the 32GB model is priced $110 less than the current generation of the iPod Touch and Sony X-Series. It's still not quite the bargain of the Cowon S9, but the Zune HD's 720p video output, HD radio, and Web browser, make it a very different product than Cowon's.

Of course, it's unlikely that Microsoft will be the only one releasing a new touch-screen portable media player this fall. Apple's ritual September iPod announcements could include price drops to match or surpass the Zune HD, or perhaps include the mythical 64GB Flash memory player everyone's so convinced they need. The annual iPod vs. Zune wars are just warming up, folks. At least this time around it's looking like a fair fight.

Note: Tune in to CNET Live today, Tuesday, August 11, at 12 p.m. PT/3 p.m. ET to watch a live episode of CNET's MP3 Insider podcast, with special guest Brian Seitz from Microsoft's Zune team and Zune Insider blog. He'll be bringing along a Zune HD and taking a few questions from the CNET Live chat room.

Darn Microsoft, stop teasing us and bring to us the Zune HD Phone, GET WITH THE PROGRAM.
Or if anything else, port the UI to Win Mobile 6.5 through an update or to Win 7 Mobile.

Stop wasting time, you have the goods in your hands with the Zune HD,

To Steve Ballmer - If you are listening, we want a Zune HD Phone, don't listen to the copy cat comments and get with it.

"At least this time around it's looking like a fair fight." Wow. I missed it. When did Apple allow Zune to sync with iTunes?

Wow I missed it. When did iTunes have 100% of the online music market locked up?
by slapppy August 11, 2009 9:52 AM PDT
A fair fight? Laughable. Excuse me but this POS Zune has never made any money since 1996 introduction. It's fed by monopoly money. How is that a fair fight with other companies that has to justify a products existence by making a profit with it?
by tmcdanne August 11, 2009 10:47 AM PDT
I just don't see the market for this product. If you want a full fledged video/music player, the ipod kills the zune hands down with its link to itunes and all the available apps. If you want something for the gym, by a $30 creative labs mp3 player but don't shell out $300 for a zune. Besides, does 720p really matter when its on a 3 inch screen?
by gdavidgates August 11, 2009 11:04 AM PDT
Why can nobody figure out that arguing "who cares if it's 720p on a 3-inch screen?" is a dumb argument. You can download content, output it to an HD TV. THAT is the beauty of the 720p capability.
by CrashPad63 August 11, 2009 11:28 AM PDT
The 720p is the output not the native screen people. But of course those arguing this point are going to put it down no matter what. However you could at least make your arguments a little more relevant by using correct specs. Buttheads.
by CrashPad63 August 11, 2009 11:39 AM PDT
slappy you could be at least a bit more knowledgeable, the Zune was released Nov 2006, and no it has not returned any profit yet. Im not sure why you think they only sell a P oint O f S ale Zune but that is wrong as well. They normally will at later times after the rest of the inventory has been sold though. Just a little humor at your expense.
by Rod Roddy August 11, 2009 11:43 AM PDT
@ slapppy...was Zune introduced in 1996? Did Mp3 players even exist back then? Head-scratchable.
by atlrus August 11, 2009 11:50 AM PDT
Since when have smart people bought their music from iTunes?!? I get the same price or less on Amazon and I OWN the song...Duh!

@ CrashPad63

Using a Zune is pure toilet humor at your expense. LOL

Dear Zune,

Why are you so gosh-darned sexy? Every time I see you, I can't help but think about cheating on my iPhone. (Though, to be honest, that honeymoon's long over.) You're driving me wild, Zune! Please stop before I end up filing papers!

That was very funny!
by Cooper33 August 11, 2009 10:56 AM PDT
uhmm do you realize you just wrote a love letter to a piece of hardware...

also donald bell, this was never not a fair fight, apple just always won.
i think rather, "a fight that might last more than two minutes" might be a better choice of words.

alsooo, apple is putting cameras on the touch and nano. it's not that big a deal, but once again, it's something zune will have to play catch up with.
by leafsftw August 12, 2009 7:32 PM PDT
@SlanderPanic ROFLMAO U JUST MADE MY DAY!

@Cooper23
why do i need another camera? i've got my digital camera and my cell phone.

also i dont think the zune will even stand a chance against apple, sure the product "could" be better in every way than the ipod touch but the apple is just too popular. its just too late for now maybe in 3 years someone will pass apple but not now.....
by Ram9595 August 11, 2009 9:31 AM PDT
I'm pretty unbiased, as I like both Apple and Microsoft equally. I got my Zune 4 in January over the Nano cuz of its increased functionality and customization. So far, the battery lasts abt 8-9 hours after a FULL charge. I think the only way the Zune HD has a fighting chance is if it can seamlessly integrate with Xbox, Windows Live and provide open-source apps.

Done Done and Done. Oh and the battery is going to smoke some expectations. The chip is awesome for low energy usage. Oh and for another win updates for all legacy hardware of Zune is "FREE" cant say the same for Ipod.
by Ram9595 August 11, 2009 2:45 PM PDT
Yea it'd better, I'd like that pin software for my Zune. I know this might seem farfetched, but MICROSOFT SHOULD INCLUDE A WIFI BROWSER WITH ITS SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR OLDER ZUNES! Who's with me?
by Renegade Knight August 12, 2009 8:07 AM PDT
They need to offer more storage. If Apple ups the theirs to 64mb (120 prefered) they will still have leg up.
by wanorris August 13, 2009 2:01 PM PDT
@Renegade Knight,

Apparently there's a 64GB version too, but it won't be available immediately at launch.
by pooyan69 August 11, 2009 9:34 AM PDT
The plan is for the Zune to be integrated with XBL/Zune Marketplace. So far the Zune HD looks very promising. Battery life should be stellar with the Terga Chipset inside and the OLED screen.

The XBL integration and battery life will be key for the ZuneHD success, over the new generation IPod.
by danielszabo1981 August 11, 2009 9:53 AM PDT
Is this being compared to the iPhone? or would it be considered a contender against the iPod?

Ipod Touch is the contender.
by iconoclast04 August 11, 2009 10:10 AM PDT
How do you think this will affect the pricing of the current Zune lineup? In particular, how will the Zune 120's price be affected (if at all)?
Reply to this comment
by pooyan69 August 11, 2009 10:20 AM PDT
Most likely MS will keep the price of the Zune 120 competitive with the Ipod Classic. I don't see any major price drops for it, however you will see clearance prices for the 8g,16g flash players once the Zune HD hits in the fall.
by moshelinho August 11, 2009 10:35 AM PDT
seriously, Zune vs. ipod??????

Ipod has a much better and easier reach to its customers than zune.....is the zune available anywhere outside the united states?????? look at ipod, its everywhere, atleast here in India.

The Zune most likely will not pass the Ipod Touch in market-share but its a nice little alternative to it. Moreover, quality should not be based on just market-share ;)
by CrashPad63 August 11, 2009 11:34 AM PDT
As of this release 18 countries will see he Zune HD. And easier reach is subjective, however Zune with the new browser is going to smoke through web page loads. Has am=nyone seen the demos on this yet???
by shahamee August 11, 2009 12:52 PM PDT
iPod has a much easier what? iTunes is bloated and is in no way comparable to Zune Marketplace, especially if you have a ZunePass. The Zune software is waaaaay sexier and the now playing screen is beautiful and full of features like "Mixview" which allow you to explore more music. The current UI on the Zunes are way better than the iPod classic, and I'm sure from what we've seen so far from ZuneHD they will blow away iPod Touch UI.

Apple has marketshare and loyal customers that are tied to iTunes. Their devices have not compared to the industry for a while, and their only benefit (for some) are the apps. If you want a great music experience and unlimited music, get a Zune w/ZunePass.

If Market share is everything, then will you accept PC as the champ compared to the Mac? PC is present all over the WORLD

I currently own a sony walkman x series(16gb)......and I honestly have to say that if thats the actual price for the zune hd.......then thats a pretty good deal.

I will not not be purchasing this player when it comes out since I love my walkman........but I'm happy companies like sony, microsoft, samsung etc are starting to challenge the giant.

And I thought the X-Series looked promising.
This is looking pretty good. Although I'm sure the lower prices are in anticipation for Apple's yearly refresh.
Hmmm...
A 32GB Touch with the App store and a camera, or a 32GB Zune with HD Radio and HD output....

Makes my brain hurt trying to pick. Your move Apple.

This looks like a very nice product from what I've seen so far.

I really like the price point, especially since I'm looking to upgrade to a large compacity touch screen device soon.

I do think it's going to take a very long time for Microsoft to even touch what Apple has accomplished with the app store. I'm not going to shoot it down, but Apple has an impressive amount of apps. I think people's decisions to go Zune HD or iPod Touch is going to depend on what Apple announces in September. Hopefully it'll be something cheaper and more impressive, but even as a very dedicated Apple customer, I'm leaning towards the Zune HD right now.

This is what Microsoft should have done from the start, they could never gain ground if the prices were on par because of the customer mindset that Apple has. 110 dollars cheaper than the 32gb touch is a HUGE deal, I for one am sold, assuming there arent any glaring blemishes with the new Zune.

the zune hd being $110 cheaper than the 32GB touch may not last long though. it seems to me that apple will probably do what they did with the last ipod touch update, so they'll probably move each capacity down in price (16GB will go $230, 32GB will go to $300, and maybe even a 64GB at $400). 8GB just isn't enough anymore, so i would think that it will just be cut. the deal-breaker for me is microsoft's music service with zunepass. IMO, it's not worth paying the fee to only get to keep 10 songs a month and "renting" the rest.
by i_run4fun August 11, 2009 1:15 PM PDT
This is coming out a year too late. Apple will be updating the Touch soon and the Zune will not have a chance.

Huh? with what? Apple has all but handed over development to the unwashed masses via their app store... Apple's strategy is to focus on the platform, just look at their last rev of the iphone...cut & paste.. and implementing 8 security policies of activesync for email... 8 out of 220... theres some innovation for you... really?
all indications are pointing that the ipod is all but dead in apple's plans.. they are focusing on the iphone as their platform. ZuneHD will do just fine.. and with direct to Zune "itunes like" service they will
by pooyan69 August 11, 2009 1:19 PM PDT
Is it just me or are you finding that when these previews of the Zune HD are becoming more frequent and if/when they compare it to the Ipod touch, they almost always compare the Zune HD features and hardware and UI, sound quality etc, to the Apple APP STORE not to the Ipod touch device in general?
I have yet to see a direct comparison with specs and features etc other then the App store.

The thing I find the most amusing is when people point to market share as the end all be all of the iPod and/or iPod Touch being better than the Zune. If market share is the tell all of what's better then that would mean that all other Apple products are crap and windows is the best operating system ever, right?
by BlitzBoy1120 August 11, 2009 3:57 PM PDT
The Zune has one shot at having a chance at Apple, and that is using the well known Xbox Live capabilities. If they can score on that, and get games and movies, that'll be score one against apple.

That'll be the decision maker for me on whether I purchase one of these or not. XBL and game integration would be a killer combo, especially with 15 million 360s already out there.
by make_or_break August 12, 2009 5:25 AM PDT
Only 15 million? More like closer to 31 million by now; MSFT said it passed 30M units back in May of this year.
by Bluecharmander August 11, 2009 11:43 PM PDT
it's not enough memory, or else i'd buy it. for 350.
