Is this the back of the third-generation iPod Touch?

After a week filled with Zune HD news, there's nothing like a third-generation iPod Touch sighting to take the wind out of Microsoft's sails.

Images of the alleged camera-wielding iPod Touch surfaced earlier in the day, but were quickly shot down as a fake. Later the same day, a shaky video was published of the supposed iPod Touch, making a more compelling case for its authenticity.

The cynic in me still thinks this may be a second-generation Touch that's had its backing drilled and modified with a convincing camera. It seems odd that beyond the addition of camera, Apple would have left the design of the iPod Touch unchanged. Then again, the iPhone 3GS is a doppelganger for last year's iPhone 3G.

What do you guys think: real or fake?

this thing is a fake! first of all I would shock me if apple let this slip, secondly the desighn is exactly the same, and come on why would apple let this thing out on the streets, answer they wouldn't, the camera looks awful in that mount and knowing apple they would have made some nice looking mount or at least made it less noticeable. total fake!

also there isnt any apple logo on it stating that its a third gen

Fake. Is very likely the 3rd generation ipod touch is gonna have camera, and maybe some new features, that's pretty obvius but if apple does not come with something different most people just gonna go for the zune. I have 1st generation touch and if this 3rd generation does not come with a camera or maybe something more exiting(most cellphone users have a portable camera on their handsets anyways) I just gonna hang with my 2 year old ipod. Or even better, give the new zune a try.

most prolly real. The new skins look the same shape also with the camera in the center top.

@EvanSei "secondly the design is exactly the same" So is iPhone 3G and 3G S.

...if it aint broke. dont fix it. Why change the design? Its perfectly fine.

I'm all for the "If it's not broke then don't fix it" thing, but it would have been really nice to see more with the iPhone 3G S like a choice between a glossy or matte finish, maybe a new color or two, also an OLED screen wouldn't have been a bad idea either. I mean really just something that makes it look different than it's predecessor, because if you're paying more shouldn't you get more to make it distinguishable.
by bluemist9999 August 20, 2009 7:35 AM PDT
@Michael
While an OLED screen would be cool, it would probably add significantly to the cost of the iPod Touch, especially since it would need to be a touch-sensitive OLED screen.

Looks pretty convincing to me.

The fact that there is no substantial change in the case design is more realistic, especially since we're about three weeks away from the probable product launch, there are leaks of cases that corroborate the camera lens location shown in this video, and the fact that there are no other "leaks" showing a vastly different case design. There weren't many changes in the case design between the iPhone 3G and 3GS, so this would seemingly follow the same pattern.

I don't understand why EvanSei and hightechfanboy think that the camera would need some drastically different mount. It should be very similar or identical to that of the iPhone 3GS in order to simplify design, assembly, and the probable use of the same part for economy of scale.

Also, I don't understand why hightechfanboy can't seem to see what appears to be the camera lens in this video. It's pretty obvious to me.

Fake!

First off look at the back its all scraped up if this is a prototype device why would it look like its been tossed around a few parties or scraped on the ground.

This is most likely a broken iPod Touch that as been modified.

Actually, it would make more sense if an engineering sample were given real-life treatment, rather than being handled with kid gloves. I used my first-generation iPod touch for about a year without a dedicated case and it ended up looking pretty similar.

Apple would actually want their test units shoved into jeans pockets with keys, coins, etc., getting dropped occasionally on the ground, getting nailed by watch bands, belt buckles, rings, etc. You want to duplicate real world usage during the design phase so retail units perform to the rigors that the average user will inflict.
by make_or_break August 14, 2009 5:38 PM PDT
If it's a test mule or prototype mockup, I'd in fact expect a lot of scratches and scuffs. In the end, most of the units in this phase of development would be trashed/recycled/destroyed anyways.

Fun...regardless if it's ethereal or in-yer-face real. Personally, I think the 3G Touch WOULD look pretty much the same as the 2G (and the 1G before it). Apple seems happy with the general design of the Touch/iPhone, so why is there any need to mess with it? Besides, once a camera is in play there'll be NO mistaking it for a 2G Touch.

I would imagine from a parts manufacturing standpoint they would put the camera in the same place on the touch as the iPhone so as to use one set of standards for the both.

this looks real to me.... i agree with cvaldes on the fact that no other cases have been leaked showing a different position for the camera to be. also a probable cause for not having the apple logo could be because this is just a prototype.

either way if apple doesn't put an outstanding feature on the device competition will get tough between the zune and ipod

Gonna wait on getting a Zune HD or 3rd gen Touch. If the Touch has next gen hardware and real-time GPS...I'm sold! But other than that , I'll be buying a Zune HD.

I just want the laser etches to more customizable like the zune originals, not just a few letters, and change the material on the back so its not a fingerprint or a scratch magnet. Nobody is going to look at it, so why make it pretty all we're looking it is the screen and its most likely going to be in a case.
by windooor7 August 16, 2009 5:23 PM PDT
AS much as i have been critical of zune : the iPod and Zune both have 480 pixels across but the iPod has about 30 more pixels down (in landscape) at 320 pixels i will support them and buy a zune. if we dont support them, then they will never catch up with ipod. though most was silly mistakes due to CEO egos eg, a tiny 3.3 screen and 30 less pixels. these are no longer small issues when it comes to competiton. ipod touch HD might just fly so high that microsoft will never play catch up ever. this thing was due soon. i guess after seen zune, they had to redesign it. and here it is in this pictures above a prototype.

zune is going to be awesome MS is known for great products that work right out the box, and the zune will be no exception. Man I can't wait for that oled screen and all those apps, and all that music and movies drm free. Running on sturdy winodws mobile; U R NOT RDY

fake. my cousin knows how to put a fake camera into a itouch. he takes off the back panel and drills a hole. sands it from the inside then puts the lens thing in.
it looks legit. but its probably fake.

Definitely a fake. Look closely and you'll see how scratched up the backing of the device is. This is a used 2G ipod. The placement of the camera is also off. Why would it be centered on the Ipod but off the the left on the iphone?

Well, that's where the holes are in the purported cases for the Third-Generation iPod touch.

@widnere and Shaun822:

The camera is centered on the iPod touch because it can be. It can't on the iPhone because the ear speaker is in the way.
by bobbyfly16 August 16, 2009 8:37 AM PDT
Because thats where the antenna is.
by rlorenz89 August 15, 2009 7:27 AM PDT
Meh. Looks fake.

I'll take the Zune HD.
