Updated: September 2, 2009 at 11:32 a.m. PDT.

For those Creative faithful who were a bit disappointed that the Zii Egg wasn't launched as a fully baked-and-branded media player for the masses, the company is about to make it up to you. This morning, Creative unveiled the Zen X-Fi2, a second-generation device that adds a touch screen and TV-out capability to the already solid X-Fi foundation. The new player features a 3-inch, touch-sensitive, TFT LCD capable of displaying up to 262,000 colors, and by the looks of it, this new Zen carries over the excellent icon-based menu found on other players in the line.

At 4 inches long by 2.2 inches wide by 0.4 inch deep, the Zen X-Fi2 is quite a bit longer than the previous-generation model and more inline with the size of the iPod Touch, though it's still smaller overall. It also appears to offer some sort of home button, but we're happy to see that Creative elected to orient this player in landscape mode, making it standout from the touch-screen masses. In addition to the updated navigational method, the Zen X-Fi2 features direct TV-out capability, though you will need to purchase a cable accessory to take advantage of it.

Other than that, the features largely carry over from the Zen X-Fi. Creative continues to offer support for multiple audio (MP3, secure WMA, Audible, AAC, and FLAC) and video (WMV9, MPEG4-SP, DivX4/5, and XviD) formats as well as JPEG and BMP photos. There's an external speaker for sharing the tunes, a built-in mic for making voice recordings, and an onboard FM radio with autoscan and 32 presets. The X-Fi2 also has basic PIM functionality for syncing calendar and contact information, and you can wake to your own music via the alarm clock feature. Naturally, the player still includes the fully adjustable X-Fi sound enhancement features, and there's now a microSD card expansion slot for adding more memory (though no word on whether the content will be integrated into your main library).

The Creative Zen X-Fi2 will also come preloaded with a variety of content, which is something that hasn't been a standard offering in the past. You will get nine eMusic tracks as well as an audiobook (James Patterson's "Maximum Ride") valued at $19.99. What is not mentioned is whether the device will offer any wireless features for updating content on the go or even accessing a basic Web browser. (And it's doubtful that this player would offer Bluetooth...or Mac-compatibility, for that matter.)

The good news is you won't have to wait long to take advantage of Creative's first touch-screen MP3 player. The Zen X-Fi2 is set to be released at the end of September in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB models for $129.99, $179.99, and $229.99 respectively.

Creative ZEN X-Fi2 optional accessories:

  • Slim and stylish black leather case - $19.99
  • Silicon skin protects the player from knocks and bumps, available in clear and pink - $14.99
  • Customized screen protector - $9.99
  • AV cable brings digital pictures and videos with audio to the television screen - $19.99
  • ZEN USB power adapter charges the player via USB without the need to plug it into a PC - $29.99

At this pricing the new ZEN is certainly worth it. It does not seem to have all bells and whistles of more expensive players such as iPod Touch or Zune but is cost much much less and audio quality with zen players has always been good both in my ears and according to tests.

After re-reading I noticed It supports FLAC audio? Really, can anyone confirm this?
I do not see this new player on creative website to check myself.

Yes, it has FLAC, per the Creative press release.

i love my Zen. but when it is time to replace it i think i would choose the Zune HD over this. It depends on how much people like it and if it comes with music organization software this time.

I own the Zune HD and the Zen X-fi as well.
If you like the Zen sound, you'll be disappointed with the Zune HD

MY only comment is...BRUTAL CHOICE OF BACKGROUND MUSIC DURING THESE CREATIVE VIDEOS. COULDN'T THEY PLAY A SONG THAT DIDN'T LOOP OVER AND OVER AGAIN EVERY 10 SECONDS!

Haha...totally agree with you on that one.

It's a no-go for me. That interface is horrendous and the swiping animation (or lack there of) was just awful. You can totally tell this is there first romp into the touch screen realm, but I guess you gotta give Creative an E for effort. Just not for me.

Don't you think the bad swiping animation might be the camera making it look like that?
by pussmonkey September 20, 2009 4:35 PM PDT
ya don't know what you're talking about !
by Brandon.Starr September 30, 2009 7:14 PM PDT
Pssh! This isn't about the swiping motion! Who cares about a stupid animation! I'm more interested in the price, sound quality, and video clarity. Who cares about a stupid transition? I would understand if you were complaining because you thought the new interface looked like crap, but I'm really not interested in a quick little scrolling animation. If you want a super-slick main menu, just get a 16GB iPod Touch for twice the cost... Apple fanatic...
by tipoo_ September 2, 2009 1:27 PM PDT
Not bad...For the price. Resistive touch screen, choppy interface, this is by no means a high end player, but not everyone needs one.

The pricing is solid, given that the player seems relatively feature rich, and has support for all those formats. I previously owned a Creative Zen, and loved its ease of use. I am more fond of tactile controls on this kind of player, but regardless, it looks great for the price.

Direct TV out is awesome, but what sort of special cable do you need?

If it had more storage I'd definitely consider it.

Looks like it's going to be a rather standard A/V cable available from Creative for about $20.
by NocturnalCT September 2, 2009 3:20 PM PDT
Too bad no Stereo BT support. For airplane rides etc. I prefer wired 'phones but in the gym a BT headset is sooooo nice I'm not sure why it's not more popular. Sound quality is sufficient when grinding away on the stair master or pumping iron. Lack of wires is terrific. Being able to flip to the next song or adjust volume without touching the player is great too.

I had a zen once and it was horrible, I got it for Christmas with a case, in just 1 year, it started to freeze up at random times and basically became unusable.

The Zen is awsome. Just know that I must have it soon. Perhaps for the holidays. Thanx for sharing.

Great to see that Creative isn't just limiting themselves with their Zii (or whatever it's called). I liked my first Zen better than my X-Fi, but at least that one stiil works, unlike the two Zens I bricked. Totally unimaginative of Creative to limit themselves to a max cap of 32GB, just like Samsung, Sony and Microsoft before them; do they honestly BELIEVE that Apple is going to stay still with the next gen Touch? Thinking inside the box that Apple creates must make those boys and girls down Cupertino way chuckle a deep hearty one and grin like the proverbial Cheshire Cat.

The 32GB is a price point, that is why they all use it, INCLUDING Apple (I wanted to point out that you left them out, fanboy). Apple couldn't think past 32GB either, oh wait, didn't I mention price? Hmmmm...

It's just unfortunate that none of Creative's Zen lines are available at Best Buy (in Canada, Best Buy and Futureshop) due to some ongoing "strife" between the two companies.

I used to be a HUGE creative mp3 player fan, and owned 2 ZEN players. Unfortunately Creatives Awfull customer service has turned me away from their products forever. After numerous people attempted to upgrade their firmware via creative's suggestion, and thier mp3 ended up becoming a 200 dollar paper weight, their customer service told everyone that it was user error and that they would not help. Thanks creative...never again

I own 4 Zen's ,yes 4,.. No problems with mine !!!
by Barksfan September 3, 2009 7:28 AM PDT
At least there is a micro sd card slot - after watching the videos, it sounds like the content of the card is intergrated into main memory - unlike the Zen (which I presently own). What is the largest micro sd card you can buy? It looks like 16gb at the moment.

Zen has BETTER sound, I own both !!!
by danielszabo1981 September 3, 2009 9:55 AM PDT
I've ownly owned 1 Zen product (the model eludes me, but it was oriented landscape, the size of a credit card, with buttons on the right hand side). The video is amazing, and the sound is quite good (I hesitate to say "great" because I've compared it to the quality output of their desktop sound card solutions and its not even close). However, the software that came with the thing was complete sh*t. Out of the box: sync problems, driver downloads, ZERO help from their support (via website).

I can't say I'd buy this imitation iPod. Its just strikes me as another knock-off in a long line of not-quites.

i'm a lefty and it feels so awkward holding the Zen (credit card one) with my left hand and operating the controls. i end up having to use 2 hands. i know this is a touch screen but still, the home button is on the right side.

i was wondering if theres some way to change the screen orientation?
