If the MP3 player market was a fault line, we'd have a boatload of busy seismographs on our hands. Certainly, two of the most exciting releases of the past couple weeks are the new iPod Touch and the Zune HD. Now, if you're curious how the two devices compare with one another, you could always read the deluge of articles available on CNET and around the Web, but we can certainly see how that might be a bit overwhelming. Soon enough, we'll pit the two players head-to-head in a knock-down, drag-out brawl (aka Prizefight). In the meantime, we've created a purely technical spec-to-spec comparison chart to tide you over.

I was going to say, given that the deciding factor will probably be whether someone wants a touchscreen music player or something that can do a little bit more. The App store definitely needs to be on the list.
by Seaboro September 17, 2009 3:58 PM PDT
This article also doesn't mention that the HD has a total of 9 apps, compaired to 75000.

In my opinion, the knockout punch that lands the zune is first place is the breathtaking software. A friend of mine once said, "wow, you sure know alot about music" and I replied, "no, I use the zune software."

the problem is is that no ones every heard about zune... i showed all my friends my zune hd and they were wowed... ipod is considered the only mp3 player, and it does have a good amount of market share, but the zune is meant for playing music more
by PandaSage1221 September 17, 2009 7:32 PM PDT
"the zune is meant for playing music more"

So true. I was trying to make this point to someone on the gdgt Zune HD discussion forum, and the guy just wasn't getting it. There's much more to the music experience than "they both play songs."
by pdskep September 18, 2009 4:43 AM PDT
I have an iPhone. 98% of the apps on there are a useless waste of time. How many fart apps do you need? If MS could come up with about 100 or so useful apps it would be even IMO. Your right. The Zune software is fantastic. It blows iTunes out of the water. Smart playlists on the Zune SW would be nice though.
by DigitalAngelic September 18, 2009 6:29 AM PDT
@pdskep:

The Zune software does have smart playlists. I believe they're called auto playlists though.
by Rod Roddy September 18, 2009 7:08 AM PDT
@ jakemochas, this is to be expected from people who suffer from Ipodapnia(those who think the ipod is the sole PMP player). There is a cure for this disorder, buy a Zune, the only known side effect of choosing a Zune is that you will never go back to an iPod again.
by JWolford September 18, 2009 3:04 PM PDT
@DigitalAngelic: Close, but no cigar.
Actually, it's called Smart DJ, and it runs similarly to Pandora Radio in that it pulls in music from the cloud. And unlimited skips!
by ace10134 September 18, 2009 7:33 PM PDT
@JWolford

That is, if you have the Zune Pass. But with that said, you MUST get a Zune Pass subscription if you get a Zune, since as he said, it's like Pandora, but unlimited skips and unlimited downloads!! AMAZING!
by streamline35 September 19, 2009 1:01 AM PDT
@JWolford - DigitalAngelic was correct - they have "autoplaylists", which are the same thing as itune's "smart playlist". Smart DJ is entirely different.

@ace - yes, pandora is a great setup, but it has some specific limitations that the zune subscription pass doesn't - first and foremost, it only streams, where as smart dj will actually download to your mp3 player for use when you don't have internet. I think there are some other disadvantages to pandora radio, but I don't use it, I'm not quite up to speed on all the details.
by red90miata September 17, 2009 4:49 PM PDT
If you have the Zune subscription the device isn't even comparable. I let my friend with a Itouch checkout my Zune HD and he could not believe how nice the UI and Marketplace are (he had it for a couple hours straight)! MS really has a solid Music Player.

My friends have played around with it, and they were freakin impressed, too.

All MS has to do is advertise this a bit, then it'll take off! Also, pre-install Zune into Windows :D
by yeks1 September 17, 2009 5:10 PM PDT
I can't wait till the prizefight.

I already know the Zune HD is better but it's just the ipod zombies that fail to admit that.

lol, come again?

I am sorry, but for the price, you can do alot more things on an iPod touch than you can a zune HD. In addition, the zune HD will (if it ever gains a store) have an extremely limited number of applications and why? Because noone wants to develop for a player that less than 1.5% of the market uses. They would rather develop for a market that already has 60%+ market share, because it would make them more than 10 times the profit.

Hardware-wise, the zune is good. Feature-wise, the iPod touch is sooo much better.
by bobmonkey07 September 18, 2009 6:24 AM PDT
@yelonde

you are clearly ignorant of the fact that people do develop apps for zunes.
it is not set up the same way as ipoo's, but they still exist.

i personally use an alarm clock app on my zune every day
by NPGMBR September 18, 2009 6:38 AM PDT
Yelonde - Zune Marketplace DOES have an apps store. Of course the number of apps is like less than 20 right now but I expect that will change with time. Besides demand for more apps will improve when Microsoft finally launches the Zune globally.
by iconoclast04 September 18, 2009 7:15 AM PDT
@ Yelonde

Give it some time. Once MS puts some good games on the Zune and leverages its xbox 360 base, it might start gaining share.
by ducttape36 September 18, 2009 8:21 AM PDT
id rather do one thing better, than do more things. zune is an mp3 player, a fantastic mp3 player with fantastic MUSIC oriented features. itouch is a pocket computer. yes, it plays music, but lacks the music oriented features that are already integrated in the zune. that said, itouch is an awesome gadget for pocket web surfing and entertainment. it all depends on what you want out of your device. quality vs quantity of features are what you have to decide best fits you.
by lj2727 September 18, 2009 11:34 AM PDT
Ok heres the thing... iPod bad, Zune best thing since sliced bread. Got it. Personally I would never buy a Zune for the same reason I won't buy an Xbox. I just cant stand M$ too much to let my money go to them. Anyways, short and simple, if Zunes are SOOO much better how is it M$ only has 1.1% of the market? Sandisk has almost 7x that and Apple has 74.1%.
by make_or_break September 18, 2009 2:37 PM PDT
@lj2727,
Really? 74.1%? I thought iPod was over 80% before; so what happened?

(yeah, I know...it's called the iPhone...just couldn't resist getting a dig in).
by Yelonde September 18, 2009 4:59 PM PDT
@bobmonkey07

You are clearly ignorant of the fact that I never said that people don't develop for the zune. In an attempt to get back on track, I will clearly state to you what I said, quote:

"the zune HD will (if it ever gains a store) have an extremely limited number of applications"

Do you read anywhere in that line that I said people never develop for the zune? I don't think so.
And if you think that you have it great because your zune comes with something as simple as an alarm clock, then you don't know what you are missing out on.

@Ducttape36,
Quality vs quantity? Are you joking? Last time I checked, the zune browser was god awful for browsing the internet. You call that quality? Oh wait, of course you would, I realized that zune fans are freaking out over something that iPods have had for years. And last time I checked, my iPod was better quality than my friend's zune, who after using it for about a year, said that she hated it, and bought an iPod instead. My other friend's 1st gen screen broke. Not only that, but he suffered an incredibly ridiculous "leap year" bug. Good quality? Think again.

@all of you
Do you seriously think that over time, zune will gain a large marketplace? Like hell! I will be surprised if zune's app store ever gets 500 apps. The reason for my reasoning is this: People who wanted smart-PMPs already got it 2 years ago. Not only that, but the iPhone is was built for a phone as well, meaning it penetrates more customers. There is no zune phone, winmo apps are not compatible, and the zune market share will plummet after MS discontinues their other zunes. Sorry folks, but in real life, the zune has not succeeded, and will probably not succeed, unless MS does something absolutely stunning. Knowing microsoft, they have always been followers, so I do not see a positive change for the future of the zune brand.
by WhtKnight85 September 18, 2009 5:05 PM PDT
I'm a Zune owner, never owned an iPod, but I still have to point this out:

Its not as simple to simply say one is better than the other, but rather look at what each one is best at. Zune, in my opinion, is a great music device with great sound quality that beats the iPod, and with a strong focus on music discovery through use of their Zune Pass. Its weak point is the lack of a huge game library and utility applications, and without the Zune Pass, the Zune is just a music/video playback device.

The iPod Touch is a great all-purpose device with a great emphasis on games and utility applications. Its essentially a PDA/mini-computer that allows you to find an app for most any of your uses. And it plays music! Its weakness, however, is a lack of new music discovery, since you essentially need to buy albums to listen to new music. Sure, the Pandora app alleviates this problem somewhat, but that feature isn't integrated with the software.

Each device is best for a specific audience: hardcore music fans will enjoy the Zune's ability to have an all-you-can-eat music buffet at an affordable price, though they (currently) must give up the use of many apps. iPod Touch users gain the large library of apps and games to use/play, but finding new music is not as easy, and more expensive if they plan on buying those albums and end up not liking them.

I love my Zune, but as a tech/spftware guy, I can see why an iPod Touch is attractive. To each their own.

The Zune is in many ways superior. Unfortunately. I severely need a voice recorder. Microsoft, will you please add one along with a small microphone peripheral?

you don't own a phone? Wouldn't it be easier to just use that, since you wouldn't have to buy any peripherals to make it work?
by EvanSei September 17, 2009 6:51 PM PDT
I have used the zune software before and was not impressed, anyways the iPod touch is still better, the thousands of apps is really what gives the touch the edge. as for looks I like the touch with the all glass front and shinny back (put an invisisheild on to keep it shinny) and I love the iPhone software, but things will soon change if apple doesn't get on the ball with high def audio, oled ect. they put off upgrades for this year and they will regret it, and if they don't upgrade next year they might as well throw in the towel.

yeh, but on the apps thing, microsoft is only tryin to make the best music player out there, and they have. addin apps and web browser was to make people happy, give it time and the zune will get some apps to it, it has to grow. the ipod didnt have 75000 right from the start.
by ace10134 September 18, 2009 7:45 PM PDT
Umm, I think you're a very, VERY small minority when you say that you don't like the software.

The software is superb all of the upgades to hardware and software are awesome and now the Zune HD! I can't even describe it. Of course, the ipod touch has over 1000 apps but I still think the Zune HD is a force to be reckoned with.

what a pointless comparison
the specs mean nothing
the software is what makes the difference
the zune is a well designed piece of hardware and has a great UI {although a bit form over function}
it still lags behind the ipod touch in features and capbilities
forget the app store and the accesories market
lets talk about the apps that come bundled with the device
on the touch you have a mail app, a faster web browser with multiple page support, rss feed reader
google maps app, a calendaring app with great UI etc
the ipod touch is more of a PDA type of device with internet and Media capabilities

while the Zune HD is completely a media centric device
the internet capabilities are laughfable at best

by NPGMBR September 18, 2009 6:46 AM PDT
Ok, I admit I don't know much about the iTouch so Im asking a serious question.

Does the iTouch have an always on connection to the net? If not, how important can any of these apps really be?
by pellets007 September 18, 2009 6:38 PM PDT
The iPod touch and the Zune HD both have the ability to access WiFi networks which allow these devices to use and manipulate the internet. The example given is that the iPod Touch can have multiple web pages open at once-"tabs" if you will-while the Zune HD is limited to one web page. I find this highly hypocritical given the vast majority of savvy consumers begging for a multitasking iPhone (and therefore the iPod Touch) yet they are the same consumers who give the Zune HD no faults. In any case, most applications sold or distributed on the App Store (for the iPod Touch) do not require internet access and are useable when the device is out-and-about. Some applications require internet to use the application and some only need it to use specific functions such as sending information to servers to enable highscore lists, et cetera.

by incrediblebrendan September 18, 2009 2:50 PM PDT
apple was only around 10yrs ago because M$ saved them financially... is that equivalent to foretelling doom and gloom? i'm confused
by Yelonde September 19, 2009 1:34 PM PDT
And microsoft gained inspiration from apple, and invented their own OS after the success of apple. Yeah, both companies are borrowing from eachother. If it weren't for apple, Microsoft wouldn't exist, just remember that folks.
by rufina12190 September 17, 2009 11:11 PM PDT
why doesn't zune hd support wav?
Reply to this comment
by MadLyb September 17, 2009 11:21 PM PDT

by Jasmineflower September 18, 2009 9:10 AM PDT
Not sure why, but MS has never offered WAV support for the Zune. I think @MadLyb might have a point, though.
by deniceels September 18, 2009 10:17 AM PDT
And probably wav files would be kinda big in file size unless compressed? Given that most direct compression do leave wav files a tad too big for my liking.

by NPGMBR September 18, 2009 6:59 AM PDT
I agree but it makes me wonder if MS will eventually go the same route. Im a true believer in dedicated devices but consumers seem to be choosing do-it-all devices for convenience over function and it leads to bloat (ironically the same thing Apple fans ***** about MS software) and is something they currently moan about in iTunes.

Also makes me wonder what happened to Origami......anybody remembe that?
by scorpiousx September 21, 2009 5:37 PM PDT
Origami got canned, an app store doesn't fit into MS long term strategy, seems they want to split the mobile market into three parts unlike Apple.
by Mannyv2 September 18, 2009 4:50 AM PDT
Wow. PR department from Microsoft is really active on this board.

Jasmine - you "forgot" the most important feature: the number of apps available... 80,000 vs 9

Another feature you might want to mention is the # of videos available on itunes
Reply to this comment
by pdskep September 18, 2009 4:52 AM PDT
What % of those 80000 are fart apps? Quality vs. quantity can put MS over the top. Most Apple apps are a waste of time.
by SuperYogurt September 18, 2009 7:36 AM PDT
Wow people just aren't very bright. Let's say only 1% of 80000 are actually useful (the actual percentage is probably much higher). That still makes 800 useful apps that you can download. 800 vs. 9..... Not much of a comparison. Especially when you have to wait 20~30 seconds watching commercials every time you use one of the "apps" on the Zune.
by rapier1 September 18, 2009 8:43 AM PDT
How long did it take for Apple to come up with those 80,000 apps? How many apps did they have in the first month? How about the first year?
by pellets007 September 18, 2009 7:02 PM PDT
500 on launch; 800 three days after launch. Was it not Ballmer who said that any sane developer would not accept a 70% return on their applications? It seems his statement would be the antithesis of actual events. Even if the iPod Touch had 10 applications on launch day your statement is null; maturity is everything in the market these days. The iPod Touch is on its 3rd generation (?) and it has become an epidemic amongst young teenagers while any other music player has yet to reach the epitome of an MP3 player. At times I find this dastardly annoying because others ask me if I own an iPod and when I respond that I own an MP3 player they comment that the two are one in the same. But perhaps it is only myself who believes that the two are not synonymous.

It is clear who the winner in the applications aspect is. Regardless of whether or not you believe that Zune HD should be exempt of comparison based on its new release, it is a factor that must be considered; it is a first generation device that has yet to see the fruition in this area.
by ace10134 September 18, 2009 8:11 PM PDT
^^ Ummm....there were 0 apps on the iPhone's release. 0.
by pellets007 September 19, 2009 11:28 AM PDT
Obviously. The user, Rapier1, did not make a clear distinction between the platform or the application store, thus I began with the latter. Hence saying that there were 500 applications on launch; the statement holds true.
by Al Meckler September 18, 2009 4:56 AM PDT

Zune HD

WMV, HD WMV, MPEG-4, H.264, DVR-MS, HD MPEG-4 (with auto transcode)

Apple Ipod Touch

H.264, MPEG-4

Nuff said. To be honest I'd rather get an Archos 5 Android over these 2.

Archos 5 is cool, but it's a niche market. By far for a true gadget-head...with deep pockets ;-)
by Brent212 September 18, 2009 1:50 PM PDT
@Rod Roddy:
I agree about the niche market thing, but deep pockets? I saw the previous model (regular Archos 5, no Android) with 250 GB for something like $230 on amazon recently. You can get the new model with 160 GB for $330. That's $70 less than the 64 GB ipod touch. More storage for less doesn't strike me as something that's reserved for people with deep pockets.
