Unboxing my custom Zune 80

by Donald Bell

You can't accuse me of not putting my money where my mouth is. I paid full price for my custom Zune 80. Let's hope I don't regret it. Click on the photo to view the Zune Originals unboxing image gallery.

As a longtime iPod loyalist, I had a lot of mixed emotions ordering a Zune 80 for myself last Sunday. Part of me felt like a traitor, honestly. I thought about my poor 5G video iPod, which had been ignored for weeks at the bottom of my messenger bag while I played with Microsoft's loaner for my review. Now, I'd never abandon my iPod completely, especially considering that part of my job is reviewing the seemingly endless parade of iPod accessories. Still, I figure there's room in my life for another MP3 player, right? I mean, I would be negligent as a digital audio journalist if I didn't order one.

Well, my Zune 80 arrived today, and I can honestly say I have no regrets (so far). I went the custom route and ordered the Zune 80 directly from Microsoft on its ZuneOriginals site, complete with custom artwork. Say what you want about the Zune, but the designers have definitely outdone themselves on packaging details. From the foil-embossed box, to the golden envelope, the entire package from ZuneOriginals felt like it should be holding Lil' Jon's diamond-encrusted Pimp Cup. Considering that Microsoft is offering these deluxe versions of the Zune for roughly the same price I'd pay in the store, it feels like a bargain despite the fact that I'm really putting more money in Microsoft's pocket by ordering direct. From an industry perspective, I think it's interesting to see how the marketing team behind the Zune is using the ZuneOriginals concept to both make good on its "You make it you" campaign, and at the same time offer a real incentive for customers to buy direct.

I know all this Zune-love is going to make me sound like a shill for Microsoft, but trust me, I have my complaints, as well. I'm writing this because I think what Microsoft is doing with the design and marketing of the Zune is noteworthy, especially when so many iPod competitors seem to be getting more sheepish about their product launches year-by-year. I had just as much excitement opening my custom Zune 80 this morning as I did unboxing the iPhone on the day it was released--and that's no small feat. It may sound like novelty, but part of that excitement was because of the mystery of how good or bad the artwork etching would turn out (quite good, I thought). I think it's also worth noting that this was a fun product to order, thanks to the online customization tool employed on the ZuneOriginals Web site. Getting two lines of text etched into my iPod was not nearly as exciting as browsing Zune's catalog of full-size artwork. As a longtime iPod fan, it pains to admit when the competition looks this good, but I honestly believe the Zune deserves some recognition here.

And now for the show...Here's a hastily-produced video of the unboxing of my "Originals" Zune 80, with running commentary from Josh Lowensohn and Nicole Lee. A more detailed photo gallery can be found here.

Wow...very nice. Better built than iPuds and the customization on the back looks very nice.
No wonder they are selling so well. Enjoy !

Love the new Zunes and can't wait for future installments of newer updates.... : D

But why didn't you include the Zune in your suggested Christmas gifts this year? I tied the iPodC in your PrizeFight, but no nod for a gift? hrm.......

I have been pretty impressed with the Zune. A side by side comparison of the tech specs puts zune clearly in the lead. However, Apple does continue to score points for the design factor, although the second gen Zune has come a ways since the ugly first gen release. But let us not forget the ugly first gen iPod.

For the money, I would have to say that Zune wins.

Could you guys maybe redo the wireless send songs thing that you did last year? It was a movie that you guys went out on the streets and looked for other Zuners, but maybe you can actually find enough zuners after all the sales and stuff.

What's with the sausage fingers, and why are you throwing stuff around all willy-nilly? Some 12-year-old Malaysian kid put a lot of effort into packaging that thing for you, and some recycling plant will spend even more time (and energy) disposing of tall hat swag!

I love my 30 gb zune, aside from some issues with the new firmware. I look forward to purchasing the 80 gb model at a later date. I don't really like the Zune Originals. I mean the designs are nice but they should have left the color black on both sides and made the designs in another color like red or blue.

I got the iPod 80GB for my wife and the Zune for me thorugh ZuneOriginals. I loved the ipod (a first for "us"), but I'm in love with the zune screen. I'd change the Zune for a slim sexy ipod if they had a larger screen.

The only complain about the iPods is that they take a LOT of space for pics. The Zune does a better job. The iTunes and Zune software really sux!!!!

I also was really excited on seeing the package. I'm not kidding, it is nice. Plus the free laser etching!!

Why doesn't microsoft just skip the "Zune Pad" altogether, give it a touch screen, and keep the hard drive, and add support for apple lossless. I would so go there! I got my iPod before i knew about apple lossless and am stuck, even though now the iPod Touch looks amazing.

Microsoft could easily go to a touch only screen as apple did. Have you tried taking a touch screen device to the gym or just for a good walk? It is not intuitive. I use a handheld computer equipped with media center and when it comes to changing to another song I am looking for controls not the touch screen.

iPod loyalist....bwahahaha. That's a good one. There ain't no such animal working at c|Net.

One of the things I enjoy about your faceoffs is by how many points the various apple products will lose no matter what they are pitted against.
