If Skype for iPhone seems like a big deal to you, you're right. It's topping iPhone App Store charts in nine countries, Skype says.

The Skype for iPhone VoIP application, which became available Tuesday after an announcement at CTIA, is now the top free app in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Holland, Japan, Russia, and Spain.

"I'm delighted that consumers have voted with their fingertips and chosen to download Skype in such phenomenal numbers," said Skype Chief Operations Office Scott Durchslag.

You can read more about Skype for iPhone in our hands-on review or see screenshots in our slideshow.

The problem is the app is completely broken. It crashes all the time and when I rebooted my phone hoping to fix the crashes, it deactivated my phone! I had to connect to iTunes to reactivate my phone because I couldn't use it at all.

did you re-apply the update from cydia? I assume have a Jailbroken phone.

@phoenix1724:

If you've jailbroken your iPhone (like me) then you have no right to complain about the Skype app not working.

Why not? I'm honestly curious - i don't have an iPhone, so i don't really get what benefits jailbreaking one brings you.

B/c jailbreaking does make the phone a little unstable depending on what you are running.

Am I the only one that sees a Skype app as being a bit redundant? It's an app for a cell phone designed to let you make phone calls. Last time I checked the iPhone was capable of making calls without this app. Or am I wrong?

What you are missing is that you are making free calls to another skype user, and less than 20 cents a minute or less to land line or other cell phones and not being charged for using minutes since it is using WI-FI connection.

or if you are on a wifi connection say in Japan (or any other cuntry)... you can make a local call to the US

there seem to be lot of morons around who dont see a point to it, im guessing they dnt travel or have freidns in other cuntries or they dont even have an iphone

Yeah, you are the only one...

Rammer...the upside of jailbreaking your phone allows for many advantages over a non-jailbroken one. For example the reason I enjoy it is because I am able to use themes, different icon groups, different keyboard designs, enable video recording and if you live in Canada it allows you to download Skype via the special methods as Skype is for some reason not available in the Canadian iTunes store. There are probably a ton more benefits but thats what I, a regular user, would find teh most beneficial.

Ah, i see. So why would the owner of a jailbroken iPhone have no right to complain about the faulty Skype app?
by April 1, 2009 12:45 AM PDT
I too had skype crashing on me the moment I opened. After bit of troubleshooting it looked to me that winterboard was the culprit. I had jailbroken my iphone. Once I disable winterboard everything was working smoothly on the skype app. Unfortunately skype app is getting some bad press due to us jail breakers not doing our home work.

Skype for Iphone is useless, better to use Fring - with Fring you can use the skype while on cellular network, unlike the skype for iphone. Because of iphone software, both applications have to be left running in order to receive live skype chats, which one can only hope will be fixed with version 3.0 software upgrade. The sound quality is much better on the Fring, on either 3g network or regular cellular network then on skype on wifi, this application is over hyped and waste of time to download - and Canadians, don't feel you are missing out on something, because skype is a ******** in Canada, go and get Fring - it is free and a much better alternative.

I log on to Skype through Fring also. The delay is much more noticable with Fring, compared to Skype on my PC. The sound quality is not as good either. I was hoping the new Skype for iPhone would be an improvement, but sounds like it may be not.

BTW, does the new Skype for iPhone only works for the 3G? I have the first generation iPhone, jailbroken.

A growing number of new users are finding the Skype service sends us to a Chinese web site instead of the service purchase site:
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=256411&st=120

We all seem to be directed to this Chinese site that seems to be selling a USB phone:

So far, no evidence of a fix.

Here is an interesting thing I found on http://tinyurl.com/iskypereview

Important solutions to the COMPLAINERS:

1) Complaining that you can?t use Skype on 3G?

Just Jailbreak your iphone and install ?voipover3g? from cydia. Jailbreakers will be able to save their minutes whenever they want because this app makes the iPhone think that it is on wifi all the time.

2) Complaining that you can?t run skype in the background while using another application?

Just install ?backgrounder? from cydia on your jailbroken phone.

3) Complaining that you cant use gtalk, msn and other IM?s?

Its a SKYPE only app. Duh! Use Beejive or someother app if you want to chat using other IM?s.

4) Complaining that there is no video conferencing, SMS and other desktop client features ?

Play the waiting game for a while. The folks at skype will definitely be releasing these features in not-so-distant future updates.

UPDATE: Complaining that Skype is crashing every minute on your jailbroken iphone?

* Saurik has released a new mobile substrate and the issue is fixed. Just update ?mobile substrate? from cydia. Once this is done you can enjoy uninterrupted calls on skype from your jailbroken iphone.

The one quirk I noticed right away is that, on an iPod Touch 2G, Skype will suck your battery dry in a very short time. Apparently, this isn't an issue on an iPhone. Otherwise, a great app; one of the better VOIP clients around.

One off the best apps I have ever used. I was waiting for skype on my iPhone for one year since I switched to ATT.
It has never crashed and I use it daily. I love it because I can just get close to a McDonald's or Star bucks or other WiFi and make international calls. Wow, Finally finally my skype out is being used the way it should.
I think for those it is crashing, it would be a good idea to hardboot the phone or install the latest firmware.
God is good!
