Apple's Mac OS X announcements from Seybold

Apple has posted press releases on Mac OS X announcements from Seybold. Here are the highlights:

First Major Upgrade to Mac OS X Hits Stores This Weekend: "Apple today announced that Mac OS X version 10.1, the first major upgrade to Apple’s next generation operating system, will be available in stores this Saturday. This major upgrade to Mac OS X delivers dramatically enhanced performance, a refined Aqua user interface, and unprecedented support for digital media and devices including DVDs, MP3 CDs, MP3 players, printers, digital cameras and DV camcorders. The Mac OS X v10.1 retail package is available for a suggested retail price of $129 (US). Current Mac OS X users can upgrade using the standard Mac OS Up-to-Date program for $19.95 (US). A free Instant Up-to-Date upgrade kit for existing Mac OS X users will be available through October 31, 2001, or while supplies last through Apple’s retail stores and at participating retail outlets. The Mac OS X v10.1 Up-To-Date package includes a Mac OS X v10.1 upgrade CD, full install of the Classic Mac OS 9.2.1 CD, and an updated Developer Tools CD."

Cited features include: performance boosts, DVD Playback and Authoring features, AppleScript enhancements, AirPort Admin Utility, AFP and SMB networking support, Java 2 support, more printers supported, Aqua improvements (including better support for showing long file names in the Finder: file names in icon view now wrap to a second line), and revisions to the Dock and System Preferences.

More than 1,400 Third-Party Applications Now Available for Mac OS X v10.1: "Apple today announced that more than 1,400 third-party applications are now available for Mac OS X version 10.1. The most anticipated application for Mac OS X is Microsoft’s Office v.X for Mac, featuring a bold new Aqua user interface. Major Mac OS X applications available today include Intuit Quicken Deluxe 2002, Alias|Wavefront’s Maya, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.1, Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0, Macromedia Freehand 10, Aspyr’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, Aladdin’s Stuffit Deluxe, Pro Create Painter 7, FileMaker Pro, MYOB’s AccountEdge, World Book Encyclopedia 2002 and a host of products from Symantec including Norton AntiVirus, Norton Personal Firewall and Norton Internet Security." Palm Desktop for Mac OS X was also noted.

Major Mac OS X Server v10.1 Update Now Available: "Apple today announced the availability of Mac OS X Server version 10.1, the first major upgrade to the company’s industrial-strength, UNIX-based server operating system. Mac OS X Server v10.1 delivers system-wide performance enhancements, increased reliability and substantially faster file transfer times."
