    I'm having the problem with a brand new MacBook Pro (17", core duo 2.16, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD). I'm tryin the re-seating the RAM "fix" -- well see. Here's a recap of the shutdowns:

    1. Initial power up: Made it to the first setup screen (where you choose your language). Shut down before I could click the mouse to go to the next screen.

    2. Second power up: Made it to the blue screen before the setup screens.

    3. Third power up: Shutdown *in the middle* of the startup chime. This one was really strange. The chime was actually cut-off mid-stream. Weird.

    4. Fourth power up: Lasted long enough to update the system (to 10.4.7 and all other recommended updates). Then shut itself down about half-way through installing Adobe CS.

    I'm letting it "run" overnight after re-seating the RAM. Looks like a call to AppleCare in the AM.

    By the by, I looked through the main reports on this and dont' recall seeing any complaints on this problem with the 17" MacBook Pros. Just wanted to let the world know this isn't necessarily confined to the 13" MacBook systems.

    <sigh>
