Canon scanners and Intel-based Macs

Several users have reported issues with the use of various Canon scanners in conjunction with Intel-based Macs.

MacFixIt reader Eric Woehler writes:

"(My) Canon LIDE 25 scanner purchased yesterday barely works on black MacBook. Just barely. None of the included or web-sourced OCR software works. Crashes and second start/attempt hangs machine None of the 'Toolbox' software works. If it starts, does nothing, otherwise crashes at startup.

"Found some software 'ScanGear Starter 1.1E (version is 1.1.1.1E) that works under Rosetta but it is old software."

Some users have found success in using Canon scanners, and scanners from other manufacturers that are prima facie incompatible with Intel-based Macs, with the Universal Binary utility VueScan.

Vuescan isn't Universal, it's PowerPC. It works under Rosetta.

I own a Canon Lide 20 as powerpc user and let me say something interesting. Vuescan does 2x faster scanning without stopping a second compared to Canon's bundled driver.

I have installed the latest available Canon app/driver on web for a try and same result.

It is of course bundled/free to commercial comparison.

Great to know. It is interesting that more scanner manufacturers have not made their products more compatible with Macs. There has been a huge uptic in Mac popularity. You would have thought that these manufacturers would have wanted to add these new Mac users to their list of product buyers. i wonder why Mac does not create a universal drive for these systems. Some manufacturers are just slow on the uptick.
