Apple introduces iTunes 7.0: Movies, new iPod features, more

by CNET staff

Apple announced a new version of iTunes, 7.0, at its special event today in San Francisco. The new release allows access to various enhancements made to the online music/video store and introduces some new navigation mechanisms.

Television shows downloaded from the iTunes store are now available in a 640x480 resolution -- quadruple the resolution previously offered.

Another key improvement in iTunes 7.0 is the ability for the iPod to push music back to the computer -- a capability previously offered only through third-party utilities. Now when a single iPod is connected to one authorized Mac, then another, it will be able to synchronize libraries among all three (or more) devices, rather than having to be synchronized with only a single Mac at a time.

iPod-related improvements also include a new management interface that shows a graphical representation of iPod hard drive capacity (broken down into photos, videos, audio and other). iPod management is no longer accomplished through the Preferences pane.

iTunes will also now automatically download cover art for items in your music library if you are a registered member of the online store.

Also now available through the iTunes store are movies. Currently only available in the United States, the movie store will feature titles from Walt Disney's four studios: Pixar, Touchstone, Disney, Miramax. Like television video, the movies will be available in 640x480 resolution.

The movies will take anywhere from a half hour to an hour to download on a high-speed connection, but can also be streamed a few minutes after the download starts.

Pricing starts at $9.99 with new releases available for $12.99 for the first week, then scaling up to $14.99.

Unfortunately, the movies cannot be burned to disc, but they will be available for download the same day DVDs are released.

An apple press release states:

The iTunes Store now features great new releases and library titles from Walt Disney Pictures, Pixar, Touchstone Pictures and Miramax Films, such as "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," "Shakespeare in Love," "The Princess Diaries," "The Incredibles," "National Treasure," "Toy Story," "The Rock" and "The Rookie." Customers can purchase and download movies from iTunes the same day they become available on DVD, or pre-order upcoming movies which are automatically downloaded when they become available. Customers get the same great one-click download experience for movies that they enjoy with music and TV shows."

The games require iPod Software version 1.2. I have a 60GB video iPod that is currently running version 1.1.2. iTunes 7 says that it is up to date. Does anyone know if the update is forthcoming or will the ability to play iPod games be limited to the latest generation of iPods?

OK - here is the way to update your iPod...

Click on "Check for Updates..." under the iTunes application menu. A message will pop up telling you that iTunes (7.0) is the latest version. When you dismiss this message, the iPod update (1.2) will suddenly become available.

I hope this helps others who are stuck in a similar situation.

If you keep your music library on an external HD, make sure it's mounted before you upgrade. If you don't all of your tracks will be flagged as "original not found". Advice on how to fix this for the entire library would be much appreciated.

Upgraded from 6.0.5. Not a single song could be played. The app remains confortably dumb doing nothing. Videos play ok. I had to downgrade. I was lucky to save the 6.0.5 image... feedback appreciated thanks...

Yes, I've experienced the same exact problem. Although, songs were playing for me fine at one point. I paused iTunes for about an hour or so. Got back from lunch and now no songs will play, internet radio doesn't play either but videos play fine. Weird. In any case, I'm glad it wasn't just me that experienced this.

If you have the OSS 3D plugin, remove it. That got my music back but the Cover art never downloads, or I don't understand how its suppose to work.

Thanks for the help. I was just about to un-install it too, but thought it wouldn't have made a difference because it wasn't active the last time I had used it in iTunes 6.x In any case, iTunes 7 works fine for me now.

I found that iTunes would not play either until I uninstalled OSS 3D. Once this item was removed, iTunes plays just fine. I would imagine that Airfoil will not work either.

    Bummer!

Same experience here. No external speaker sound with songs or audiobooks. Interestingly, I do get external sound with movies and videos. I have tossed pref files and reinstalled 7 with Pacifist. No luck...

Hope this gets fixed quickly. I remember I had the same problem with the last major itunes upgrade. This is getting old!

My songs play like an old vinyl record with a bad needle. I tried to purchase two shows and neither want to download. Keep getting error message -50.

Is this software from apple or microsoft?

I upgraded iTunes and quicktime via software update and then repaired permissions on my 17" powerbook. Afterwards I find that iTunes 7 has broken my Airport Express connectivity to my HiFi. Remote speakers show up in iTunes but it will not connect to them. I reset my entire airport network, and I also trashed iTunes prefs, all to no avail.

As a test I just applied the quicktime update to my Quicksilver, and iTunes 6 on that system still connects to my HiFi via airport OK. So it ain't the quicktime upgrade!

I had the same problem with AirTunes recognizing, but not allowing me to select, Airport Express speakers on my 15" DL PowerBook. I tried the usual fixes, then finally trashed iTunes 7.0 (along with its newly created iTunes Library) and dragged in 6.0.5 from a recent backup (restoring the previous iTunes Library from the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder, after removing the date appended to its name). All is back to normal-- I think I'll wait this one out until an update is issued.

I just applied the fix described here, and it works! (I had turned off IPv6 in an effort to fix a previous intermittent AirTunes problem.)

Go to System Preferences>Network>Airport>TCP/IP and configure IPv6 to "Automatically." I then reinstalled iTunes 7.0 and all is well.
