Name disambiguation: New video iPods are Fifth-generation (Late 2006); New iPod nanos are second-generation
Apple is officially calling the video-capable iPods released yesterday fifth-generation (Late-2006), while the original video-capable iPods are known simply as fifth-generation iPods. Both original and Late-2006 fifth-generation iPods currently should use iPod Software version 1.2. Version 1.2 software is required for both movie and game playing.
Meanwhile, the new iPod nanos are known as "second-generation" and should use iPod software version 1.0.
The new iPod Shuffle is also known as "second-generation" and used iPod software version 1.0.

Yeah, the nano uses firmware 1.2 (introduced with the Nike+iPod kit). But note that this is a different firmware 1.2 than for the full size iPod. Anyway you can't really make the mistake of installing the wrong firmware, since the updater (now in iTunes) prevents it.

- I bought an apple 5g refurb just last month. I'm confused as to whether software update will enable my 'old' 5g ipod to play the higher res 640x640 h.264 video OR will I be limited to hardware restrictions and only be able to play the 320x240 h.264 vids.
