Norton AntiVirus: Oct. 4 definitions update causes issues on some Macs, fix
It would appear that the updated definitions released for Norton AntiVirus on October 4th are causing issues with launching the application on some Macs.
Some users report an error message at launch saying that a re-installation is required. However, the re-install process is interrupted and fails to complete shortly after LiveUpdate is run -- indicating an issue with the October 4th definitions.
MacFixIt reader Terry Kopecky writes:
"I had the same problem arise when applying the update, both through LiveUpdate and the standalone package download. I reinstalled NAV 10.1, reapplied the October 4 update, with the same error message resulting. Reinstalling again, but this time using the September 27 Definitions file from my backup solved the issue.
"Unfortunately, if you don't have a backup of the earlier virus definitions file you won't be able to utilize this solution, as allowing LiveUpdate to run after the reinstallation will continue to download and install the defective October 4 file. And by not running LiveUpdate, you can't upgrade NAV to 10.1, since Symantec won't supply a standalone download of the updater. It would seem the only solution to your dilemma at this point is to hope Symantec fixes the problem by their next virus definitions update."
There actually is a downloadable edition of the September 27th virus definitions, so the solution to this issue appears to be as follows: re-install Norton AntiVirus from original media, but do not run LiveUpdate, then download and install the September 27th virus definitions.

Why do people run AntiVirus on a Mac anyway? I mean I'm sure at some point it might become necessary, but why do people run it now. Aren't you just paying for useless software?
People run AV software on Macs because often they have to abide by corporate or governmental network security policies that dictate any system on the network must comply with the same security policies regardless of platform. Also, if you share files with those poor vulnerable Windows users, it's just a courtesy to scan files for viruses before sending them on over.
Until I did the same OS update with my office macs I realised this could be a Symantec problem and not my own mac, as they updated the Live Update quite properly
Now I am just waiting for Symantec to solve this
