OSS 3D can cause unexpected application quits

We previously reported that the presence of the OSS 3D plug-in -- a tool used for real-time audio enhancement -- can cause issues with iTunes 7.0.x, including an inability to obtain previews of media from the iTunes Store and more.

Users have now begun reporting difficulties in other applications caused by the OSS 3D plug-in, including unexpected quits.

MacFixIt reader Nasser writes:

"It was OSS 3D version 2.0 causing applications to quit unexpectedly. Now I uninstalled it and removed all files with OSS in its name, all applications are running smoothly. One thing i can't understand, what does OSS 3D has to do with Google Earth or Apple Mail."

As such, if you are experiencing inexplicable sudden application quits, and have OSS 3D installed, you may want to try uninstalling the software by navigating to the Applications/OSS 3D directory and launching the OSS 3D Uninstaller.

UPDATE: The developer of OSS 3D has released a new version of the software -- 2.0.1 -- that may resolve some of the aforementioned issues. Among the enhancements:

  • Improved compatibility with applications
  • Added support for scroll wheel on the mouse
  • Added global hotkey to bring up OSS 3D in front
  • Entire range of OS X applications supported: VLC, iTunes 7, Skype, iChat and more
  • Daemonized Audio Server
  • Independent OSS 3D Console application

This may be due to the fact that OSS 3D uses Unsanity's APELite code. Unsanity haxies and APE are known to cause problems with Rosetta applications. If users have other Unsanity software installed they should first remove them before removing OSS 3D. If problems continue then removing OSS 3D would make sense. Other software using APELite include Default Folder X, File Buddy, LogiTech Control Center, and MLayout.

OSS 3D does not use APE and Subband software does not have a license to use APE or APELite.

OSS 3D does use APELite, at least according to their own installer blurb: "OSS 3D makes use of APELite which can be located at http://unsanity.com."

Many of us Intel Mac users continue to experience Rosetta problems with APE and/or certain haxies. For example, the most recent beta of FruitMenu still causes Rosetta run applications to quit unless you kill translated first. However, the latest beta of WindowShade X does not seem to cause any problems.

I have OSS 3D installed and have also used Default Folder X. I have not had any problems with either on my systems. However, one needs to be alerted to the possibility that problems with Rosetta are still occurring, and those problems may stem from using an Unsanity haxie or ape.

There seem to be a lot people lurking around here who get their rocks off slamming Unsanity.

    And haxies in general.

If I was a suspicious person I'd think it was mostly the dross of competitors who haven't a clue about how to program system modifications.

    For the record:

I've been using APE-based haxies the whole time I've been on OS X (about three years) and, even across numerous upgrades, I have never had any problem with them.

Of course I keep them up to date.

And I don't upgrade my system until I've read, and learned from, the travails and tribulations of the early bleeders.

But that's just common sense and a big "duh" with any program upgrade.

Especially when upgrading operating systems and system-modifying programs.

I don't think it is just Intel Mac users that are having problems. I have a G5 iMac (iSight) and the OSS 3D installer reported success in installing. However, when I tried out iTunes, none of my music would play and the OSS 3D window would not show up (even though the daemon launched successfully). On looking further I found that there is nothing in the iTunes Plugins Folder, so the installation was incomplete. Subsequent attempts to install still do not install the plugin - but still reports success!

I hope this problem gets resolved.

OK, I am sorry that OSS 3D 2.x is so buggy, but jeez iTunes 7 isn't a gift either. I really wished that Apple had some sort of acknowledgement of third party developers. My suggestion, revert to iTunes6 and and reinstall OSS 3d 1.62. And I will work on getting bugs out. Pretty much recreating AudioHijack here... remember how long it took them to get it right?

    thanks for Patience.
