QuickBooks 2006: Repeated crashes when sound alerts attempt to play

by CNET staff

Some users have reported an issue where, when QuickBooks 2006 repeatedly crashes whenever an alert accompanied by sound attempts to play.

MacFixIt reader Nate writes:

"I've been struggling for days to fix a bug with the new OSX update (10.4.8) and QuickBooks 2006 v. R4.

"It seems that when an alert sound tries to play, QuickBooks crashes. No error report, no error sound - nothing. QuickBooks just vanishes, along with any unsaved changes. I've turned off sound alerts, ditched prefs, caches, etc. - with no luck.

So far, users have not experienced success remedying the problem with deletion of QuickBooks .plist files and a few other workarounds.

I have QuickBooks Pro 2006 with the same 8.0.3 R4 update on both a PowerMac G5 and a new Intel MacBook and have no problems. However, Quicken 2006 running on my new Intel MacBook gives me the eternal spinning beachball when I try to drill down for details in my monthly budget data.
