Problems booting from AppleCare-supplied TechTool Deluxe CD (#2)

by CNET staff

Several users have corroborated earlier reports of issues with booting from the TechTool Deluxe CD for Intel-based Macs, provided as part of AppleCare.

The TechTool Deluxe CD is provided as a downloadable image, and while users are not experiencing problems obtaining or burning the image, some are experiencing issues with hangs at boot that occur after attempting to select the burned disc as a startup item.

MacFixIt reader Ben Richards writes:

"I had the same problem booting from the AppleCare-supplied CD of TechTool Pro, but I'm running an iSight G5 iMac. Called Apple, and they sent me a replacement CD, which did the same thing. Fortunately, I had already bought TechTool Pro, so I just use their CD, which works fine."

Seth Lewin adds:

"I have had the same problem you describe online: the boot process gets as far as the gray Apple screen, the sprocket spins but eventually I get a "no" sign (circle with slash) and that's it; have to force quit to get control of the machine back. This is with a disc burned from the downloaded image. Mac Pro 2.66 GHz."

Steve Macaulay adds:

"I have exactly the same problem trying to boot from the TechTool downloaded file on my Intel 24 inch iMac.  No problem burning the CD, but it hangs when I try to boot from the CD.  I did not inform Apple yet, but I've known this for 2 weeks."

Wait 10-15 minutes In some cases, it appears that the TechTool Deluxe disc simply takes an inordinately long time to boot the system. Waiting 10-15 minutes can sometimes reveal a successful startup.

MacFixIt reader John offers a case example:

"Booting TechTool Deluxe from the CD can take 15 or more minutes.  I don't know why it takes so long, but I discovered this when I started a boot, then got a very long phone call.  I was surprised to see it come up after more than 20 minutes."

I've seldom had success using the supplied TTD CD that comes with the AppleCare package. Try downloading the latest version and burning your own bootable CD. Go to this link:

    https://support.apple.com/techtooldeluxe/main?id=dl

You will be asked for your Mac's serial number. Both versions (PPC and Intel) will then be available for download.

It takes longer to boot from the TechTool Deluxe or TechTool Pro CD or DVD than it does to boot from the Mac OS X Installer CD or DVD, because more frameworks must be read into RAM to allow the application on our disk to run. TechTool Deluxe and TechTool Pro require code not needed by Apple's installer.
