Apple iPod shuffle Reset 1.0: Can resolve inability to mount, play music, more

Apple has released iPod shuffle Reset 1.0, a tool that allows you to force a restore process on first generation iPod shuffles. Performing the restore procedure deletes all data on the iPod (including music) and re-installs software version 1.1.4. This process can resolve a number of iPod troubleshooting issues.

An Apple Knowledge Base document cites the following as Mac-related issues that can potentially be resolved by a restore process:

  • Unit does not play music "With the iPod shuffle switched on, pressing the Play button will cause orange (amber) and green LEDs to flash for a few seconds, and the unit will not play any music, nor can you sync music to it from iTunes."
  • iPod does not mount "On a Mac, the unit will only be recognized in Apple System Profiler under Hardware -> USB and will not appear or mount in the Finder."
  • Normal restore fails "When attempting to restore, the unit may not be recognized at all. However, if it is recognized, the restore may fail with an error dialog 'Firmware update failure. Disk write error' or another error. It may take 3 restore attempts before the error appears. Note: iPod shuffle may take several minutes to be recognized."

Like many other Apple utilities, iPod shuffle Reset uses a downloadable installer to place an application inside the /Applications/Utilities folder. The application is called "iPod shuffle Reset Utility." The installer is available as a 2.1 MB standalone download.

I just had this experience with an iPod nano as well. Resetting solved the problem.
