QuickBooks Pro: Crashes when playing sounds (cont.): Fixes

We continue to report on an issue where QuickBooks Pro repeatedly crashes when attempting to play certain alert sounds.

One reader writes:

"Also experiencing crashing when playing alerts on an Intel-based Mac with QuickBooks 2006."

Meanwhile, we've received some reports direct from Intuit engineers indicating that the problem may be caused by the presence errant or otherwise conflicting sound components. An Inuit engineer also told us "QuickBooks only calls Cocoa's NSSound function to play sounds - it isn't doing anything tricky."

As such, there are a couple logical fixes for this issue:

Turn off sounds in QuickBooks The first step in stopping the crashes is to completely turn off certain alert sounds in QuickBooks. This can be accomplished by navigating to the QuickBooks menubar item (within QuickBooks) and selecting Preferences. Next, select Data Entry from the pop-up menu and de-select the option "Play a sound when recording a transaction." If other actions trigger the crash, turn off their sound options as well.

Disable audio plug-ins/extensions Look in the two following directories for third-party audio-related items that could be causing the issue.

  • /Library/Audio/Plug-ins
  • /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components
  • /Library/Extensions

Remove the potentially offending file(s) then quit and re-launch QuickBooks and check for persistence of the issue.
