Whither AppleJack? UPDATE: Intel-based version available

One of the most useful problem-solving utilities for Mac OS X is AppleJack, a command-line utility that makes a number of troubleshooting procedures available via single-user mode at startup.

Unfortunately, the tool has never been made compatible with Intel-based Macs, and its developer has yet to provide any guidance on when to expect an updated released.

MacFixit reader Mark Mason laments:

"Has Applejack vanished? Has the developer ceased work on it? We're now about ten months into the life of Intel Macs with no signs of activity at Source Forge on Applejack. I think it's dead. I am willing to pay a shareware fee if another programmer builds a commercial product using the source code that is compatible with Intel Macs.

"The developer's email account bounces email suggesting it's no longer valid. He asked for money to buy an Intel Mac, then bought a Mac mini, or so I believe. I read accounts of the developer asking for programming assistance and having reservations about building an Intel version."

We've attempted to get in contact with AppleJack's developer without success.

UPDATE: As discovered by one of our readers, there is a pre-release, Intel-based Mac version of AppleJack available (1.4.3rc3) . However, the developer has asked that users do not inundate him with bug reports regarding the new release, and has (for that reason) kept the release largely under the radar.

As such, if you are having problems with this release, please let us know.

Applejack 1.4.3rc3 is available and works with Intel macs.I have used it sucessfully. The developer, however, requests not to spread the news too quickly. He fears being overwhelmed with possible bug reports. See this link on the Applejack forum: https://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=30731981&forum_id=41721

Just a note to the quoted text.

A Mac Mini uses an intel processor, so I'm not sure whether the "He asked for money to buy an Intel Mac, then bought a Mac mini, or so I believe." is meant to imply that he took the money and ran, or he didn't buy what you thought he was going to buy. (Maybe he was going to buy an Intel iMac, but only raised enough funds for a mini?).

I have been testing the Intel version and it's working very well for me. Just thought you all would like to know he's still alive and workng on the project.
