iTunes 7.0.2 Special Report: Reverting (downgrading) to iTunes 6.0.5

by CNET staff

If you are experiencing major issues with iTunes 7.0.2 (or any iTunes 7.0.x release), you may want to use the following process to revert to iTunes 6.0.5:

Delete the following files:

  • The iTunes 7.0 application (located in /Applications)
  • com.apple.iTunes.plist (from ~/Library/Preferences)
  • iTunes.pkg (from /Library/Receipts)
  • iTunesX.pkg (from /Library/Receipts)

Then use the iTunes 6.0.5 (or earlier) installer.

Trying to downgrade my iTunes to 6.0.5 after many problems with the newer versions. Your article tells me how to do this, but the program won't install. I keep seeing a message that it can't be installed on this computer, a Power Book G4 with plenty of memory and disk space, in which i just now had the newer version. I would unlock whatever needs to be locked, but I don't see anything.

It was my fault. I hadn't trashed everything, but now it works. Thanks!
