iTunes 7.0.2 Special Report: Playback problems (songs, videos will not play)
Some users report problems where certain audio files will not play in iTunes 7.0.2, but playback properly in other applications (including QuickTime Player).
Jay Sokolow writes:
"After the iTunes update, my most recent podcast downloads won't play. If I click on the actual file, they will play in iTunes, but they won't play in the itunes window and they get skipped when in a playlist. I don't seem to have a problem with music files. I'm using MacBook, 10.4.8, iTunes 7.0.2."
In some cases, the problem may be plug-in related. Look in the following folder:
- ~/Library/iTunes Plug-ins
for any third-party plug-ins, then remove them. Quit and re-launch iTunes and check for persistence of the behavior. You can then add the plug-ins back one-by-one (quitting and restarting iTunes between each move) to isolate the offending item. Plug-ins that have been identified as potentially problematic include OSS 3D (a tool used for real-time audio enhancement)
Although it is a kludgy workaround, you can also drag the afflicted podcasts out of the iTunes window and onto the Desktop or another location in the Finder, then use QuickTime Player to open the file (control-click [right-click] the file and choose "Open With..." then QuickTime Player). It should play properly from within QuickTime.
