coconutWiFi: Continuing issues with dropped, slow AirPort connections

Despite developer efforts to resolve the issue in version 1.3 (the current release), coconutWiFi is still causing issues with dropped and/or poorly performing AirPort-based wireless connections. coconutWiFi an application displays you a small aqua-bubble at the top of your screen which indicates whether you're in range of a wireless network or not.

One of the common side-effects of the application is poor response ping time. Normal broadband ping time should be under 10 milliseconds. Some users have measured ping times in the thousands of milliseconds (up to 3 seconds).

The long ping times can manifest as either degraded throughput or dropped connections.

MacFixIt reader Norbert writes:

"I am using the latest version, 1.3 of coconotWiFi, and notice that the download and upload rates are reduced to 50% when coconotWiFi is active as compared to when it is not. I verified both situations with 10 runs."

You can de-activate coconutWiFi by going to its menu item [a small green or red ball] and selecting "quit."
